first, i would like to say hi to all.
i've been playing many mmorpg games, but in most of them i've found this turnoff "feature" :the skill systems.
in most game you have to choose a class, and when you lvl up you get skill points you need to invest.
in most of them you also cant use other class' items.
i really hate this in my game.
in ultima online, on the other hand, the skill systems is different. you dont earn skill point each lvl, but if you really use the skill many times, you will have it increased (the same is true for the stat points).
i would like to get links to games that you that skill system, which are free to play, or if there is a name to that, tall me so i can google it.
thanks

Ryzom is coming back soon.

hmm
in this site it is said this game is p2p.
is it not true, or do the game managers hide this very well?
Sorry missed that f2p bit. Ryzom in p2p. Don't know of any f2p skill games.
How about Ultima Online itself? Search and ye shall find it free.
Darkfall if you don't mind waiting..... possibly forever.

Edit: Actually it's not gonna be free, didn't read your post properly.
Mabinogi has a pretty good skill system for F2P. Granted you'll eventually want to use a remort item from the item shop so you can reset your level and earn skill points faster, but depending you'll just need to do it once or twice a year(though some people go for 7+ times a year, basically just the insane grinders that can no life a game though sometimes it's the exact opposite).
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Basically your looking for a UO-esque game that is free? me too, but you won't even find a p2p game like UO. UO is the first mmorpg, and the last one that will ever be done well, that's why there's still so many free servers. I played it since phase1 beta though and it's nearly impossible for me to play it again, the only acception in which I would play it again is if the free server had re-built the world Serpent Isle style and that is never going to happen because strangely enough most die hard UO fans left are not fans of Ultima VII. The skill system isn't the only unique aspect of UO, the housing system, the attention to detail, the graphics, although they are 2d, they are the best 2d graphics ever made for an mmorpg hands down.
And although I look forward to Diablo3, I look more forward to Guildwars2, but I wish those games would be more like UO, since EA is the most evil game company to ever exist UO2 will probably never happen as it was cancelled twice, but if it ever does get made I bet it will not resemble the Ultima series or UO in any way shape or form except having poor customer support and corrupt GMs.

Have you ever tried Tibia?
It's not a joke.
Tibia has a skill system
there are skills for weapons
axe, club, sword, and distance
and the magic lvl, that increase your spell damage and healing
using a weapon increase you skill with that kind of weapon and using mana points increase you magic lvl
it's a lil simpler than UO i guess
there's also no end-game, but you don't find many ubber high lvls
quests don't give exp, and thrre is no crafting
but it's the best quest system i've ever seen
something like zelda 2d
but i guess that there are lots of quests that nobody have discovered yet, in 11 years of tibia
it also have lot's of things to do if you are bored of "grind" (almost no tibia players knows these terms "grind" "pve" "carebear" "tier gear" ...)
and there is no cash items, premiun accounts (19,99 euros per 3 months) allow you to have a few skills, a promotion to your classes and allow you to travel by ship and magic carpet to other cities...
bah... I love Tibia, I hate WoW.
tibia is rpg, wow is a shotter (nothing to do but pvp and raids)
