question about exp

treyu86treyu86 Member UncommonPosts: 270

Well i did some info research on the internet and what I saw is that you almost dont get exp from killing mobs, you just gain exp from quests? I mean, is this game quest based like Lotro for example, where quests are the main way for gaining levels cause mob exp is kind of ridicule compared to quest one?

Yes you will get some xp from killing mobs but alot more for completing quests, the game does entice you to explore and quest, like the tag line says "what lies hidden must be found"

If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

yea that is what I read, but the thing is sometimes I dont like "quest grindnig" and maybe I like exploring a dungeon and just killing mobs etc to gain exp. I like games where there is a mix of both levelling types. I have (and I am) played vanguard and I find that this game offers that: you can level by both ways very well. I would love to be able to gain some reasonable exp from mobs

I have also spent the last 2 months on VG(alot better now than last year)but I think you have to admit alot of VG's quests were very well written and so many of them and you could lose yourself for about 8 hours doing quests without looking at your xp bar and have a great time,I compare that to the likes of AoC lvl 53+ were you had to find yourself a corner of the world and grind kill every lvl, well at least to level 59 when I gave up.

Now too me I would rather have a game that keeps throwing quests at me(ok not get me 10 wolf hides)and keeps me engrossed than killing the same mob over and over.

Also dont forget the likes of shard conquests are a mixture of pve and pvp that will keep you very busy while getting xp without you even caring.

Yea, I dont have problems with quest, I really prefer them but I dont like quests levelling games like WoW or Lotro when after 1 month I feel like something is not going well and I finish leaving the game. I love vanguard quests, and I also like that while doing quests I can gain levels from the mob I kill. I didnt like the DDO exp system where mobs gave 0 exp and you just gained it from quests. I am not saying if one system is better or worse, just my preferences so I hope TCoS has a mixture too, I know quests will be great and with good lore :D

I prefer "quest grinding" over "killing mob grinding". That way i dont have to stop and fight with everything when ever i want to play. I can focus on the gameworld and other players (RP).

Personally Id like to see games get away from the quest heavy XP notion...i think EQ2/WoW/Lotro have basically wore it out and it is getting very old now......IF questing is basically the only way to gain XP in this game I think Ill pass.

This is one of the things I dont like about this game, if we get experience from mobs you should be able to level relativly fast from grinding them if you choose to do that. Having one area of a game be naturally better than another for no particular reason creates less choice, and therefore makes it feel like grinding I think.

Although I tend to focus more on questing, I do some times just like to pick a spot and 'grind' out the rest of a level. More choice in ways to level is always going to be better than just one way I believe. At the end of the day however there is a lot in this game that is interesting and new from what I have seen, so I can put up with that if the rest of the game is good.

Only other area of the game I am not to sure about is the small group size, but its not really that big of a concern for me anymore since I spend less time gaming nowadays so it is easier to get a small group together quickly than a large one.

You got a point there, but don't forget that TCoS got 2 experience bars. The normal one that is called 'fame' and the PeP(personal experience points) bar.

Quests mostly give you massive amounts of fame and little PeP, while killing mobs gives you the opposite. So you can sort of boost your character by grinding on mobs to lvl 5 PeP, the max level of that bar. You'll get a speed, attack, etc... boost which will make fighting easier :)

Of course if you die your PeP level get reset to level 0 again, since this thing is linked with death in the game, they don't want to punish you for dying, only reward you for staying alive.

It's of course not completely the same, but i guess you can't have all regardless of the game you will play.

about your concerns of the group size, i think it is not so bad, if the game content is focused on small groups, then you will enjoy it as you would enjoy a 25 man raid instance in WoW, since there the content is build for 25 players :)

Keep forgetting about PeP, I think the way the game is centered around quest experience sounds a bit more appealing when you take into account PeP as well, since as you say you could grind some PeP rank to make the questing more enjoyable or quicker. Might require some planning as well when it comes to maximising the speed of leveling, how much time you spend getting PeP, and how much time your spend getting experience.

Not too worried about the group size since my only real concern is that I like grouping up with a lot of people to accomplish a goal when playing an mmo, although I like small group content as well. But there will probably be a lot of  large scale battles in PvP zones anyway that will hopefully take organised groups to win, depends how well they have designed the PvP zones.

Not too worried about instances(or dungeons, whatever people want to call them), more a PvP person anyway :) The dungeons, even if they are small sound interesting anyway, due to the AI they have been demonstrating.

Guess we will have to wait and see, only 3 or 4 months till open beta apparently :)

Edit: See what you mean about the game being designed for small groups so it is probably just as enjoyable if not more than other games that have small group content and large group content, since they are just focused on small groups they perhaps will do them better than previous mmos that do both.

well one of the positive things is that you can start a lot faster on the 'endgame' content with a smaller group, then a group of 25 persons. Since you only need 4 and not 25 people to get started :)
