A console vs PC question

FaxxerFaxxer Member Posts: 3,247

OK, so we all have heard that STO is going to be released on console as well as PC, right?  (correct me if I misread that on the FAQ)

Has ANY other MMO done this yet?

I remember hearing about it on several MMo's, but I have yet to see any PS3 ported MMO's.

At one time SWG was going to be, then Cov...then Coh....

HAS ANY MMO done this YET?   Why start with this ip?   I just want to know.

Thats actually funny now that you point it out. I've heard A LOT of game talk about porting to consoles, yet I don't know of one MMORPG that has actually done it... interesting.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

  • How the heck can they update content on a console system?

I believe only Final Fantasy has done so.  Many are making the attempt, but haven't succeeded.

What is interesting, is that WoW is not ported and rakes in the most subscribers...  and yet "Experts" claim that the PC Game Market is dying.  Hasn't it been dying for the last 15 years?

Consoles now have hard drives so they can be updated via digital downloads.  Now as how expansion packs work and additional media, no idea.  I don't own a console and the last one that I did was the Atari 2600.

    And that is why...

Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.

It is funny how "PC Game Market is dying" yet what are consoles now? They are just simple PC's, and with every generation the difference is getting smaller and smaller. Eventually the only difference between a PC and a console will be one plugs into a TV and one plugs into a monitor.

I think the biggest difference between a PC and a Console is and will always be the hardware. Which is set and done in a console, but modular in a PC.

This is a mixed blessing for both systems. On the one side, you have the console with their fixed system, where every developer knows exactly what kind of system to develop for, which makes development much easier and makes it possible to fully coax out the potential of said hardware while on the other side you have a huge load of differing system specs on the PC, all of which you have to take into account when developing a game for the PC, which of course, makes things much more difficult.

On the other hand, customizeable hardware gives you a much bigger degree of flexibility as a customer and allows you to upgrade your system as needed in order to keep up with time, allowing you to keep up with technological progress while consoles are always stuck on one tech-level.

I don#t think this particular bit will change.

Anyway, yes, Final Fantasy did it and they did a pretty decent job of it. I'm rather certain the game's problems are not because of the Interface/the differing platforms, that's for sure.

Even that's not going to matter soon. I bought a new TV for my dad back in June and it came with co/ax, component, S-video, and monitor inputs.

Now I'm just waiting for a chance to hook up my comp to his TV for an extended CoX session.

The less you expect, the more you'll be surprised. Hopefully, pleasantly so.

I haven't played any MMOs on a console yet, but there are planned releases for the near future:

    * PS3: The Agency, DC Online, Free Realms (granted, all SOE games, but also NCSoft has some planned)

    * XBox360: Age of Conan (I don't really follow that console's games)

The PS3 can have a normal USB keyboard and mouse for the matter, and there is even a keyboard-addon to the controller in the works. But I don't think that is what the developers have in mind. They want to create a simple interface (cannot blame them for doing that) that will work fast.

Final Fanatasy XI was on both pc and console, and is still doing well I believe. FFXI is the only one I can think of also that has been released now for both, bot as other have pointed out their are others planed, but with AOC i doubt that will ever happen. The agency will right now last I check still seemed like it would actually make it out.

There is another game that has just been on the consoles, Fantasy Star Online. FSO was originally released for the dreamcast and was very popular, and has since had a sequel for the xbox360. I admit I only played it for the open beta week that they did just prior to release, and it had a good combat system, but it was very much like Guild Wars in that there was cities and you formed a group to do missions. I only played it for a short time because of this. Also at the time i was not really interested in paying a montly sub for a console game.

I do believe that fun games can be made to play on both pc and console even if say the interface is possibly dumbed down as many people say. The change in interface does not make the game and less fun, and many rpgs while not mmos have great interfaces. Mass Effect my most recently played rpg, provides players with plenty of abilities and lots of player control. When was the last time someone actually used all 30 or so abilities in an mmo, normally a player has a few abilities that g with their playstyle, and these few can easily then be made to work well on a controller.

I added a little more to the thread, but I just wanted to add this before everyone goes onto say that mmos on consoles are terrible, and the population is immature. I expect this topic o be flooded with that very soon.

The latest set of consoles have hard drives for handling downloads and game add ons. The Xbox 360 ships at the lowest with a 20 gig hard drive and they have an 120 gig one now you can purchase or that comes with the top of the line model. The PS3 I think is 40 gigs or 60 gigs. The Wii doesn't have one large enough (512mb for the channels, saves, and WiiWare games which are small anyway).

I think with a console MMORPG the developers know they can't get away with large patches all the time or rewriting the game. So extra care will be spent on getting bugs, exploits, etc out of the game I feel.

The last question posed to Emmert in the interview that came out yesterday/today reminded a ton of Julio Torres when he said he wanted a more "Star-warsy" feel to the game.

    :(
