Crafting - Can anyone tell me what its like?

chryseschryses Member UncommonPosts: 1,453

I have read loads of posts about PQ's, RvR and all the main issues but no one has posted a thread about the crafting system.  I know I can get screen shots and a run down how it works from their website but I want to know how the gameplay is.  Maybe its not available yet so this thread is pointless :)

Just a note.  For all of Vanguards failings I loved the crafting system and it kept me in the game for months even though I hated the bugs.  Another game I liked was Earth and Beyond's system, AoC is ok but not in-depth enough.

Any heads up would be fab thanks!

The crafting is alot like Wow crafting, the alchemy or rather apothery is what War calls it is about the same. The cultivation is a new one instead of gathering herbs from the fields you grow them in a plot that is in your abilites tab. you add water soil and a main ingrediant. The scavaging skill is nice since you get alot of different things off of other than beast mobs. You normally scavange materials needed in apothery and cultivation. You can scavange a corpse after it has been looted, even if it isn't your kill, it does allow time for the killing party to scavange first. You can make good money from the start by using this skill goto a Public Quest area and scavange the kills. I haven't tried the other crafting available yet so I can not comment on those.

Its a joke. About the only thing you can do is grow plants. And watching plants grow is not real exciting.

Growing plants isn't the only craft, but I agree growing is a time sink it may take upto 10 minutes for one plant to grow.

Ok so you can grow plants in a paddock etc but what do you do with the items?  Is it like AoC where its more resourcing of items then you learn the recipe and just add together? Or is there more to it like Vanguard where you need to run through a small mini game?

Could be no one has really got into it yet but it would be nice to know if its a proper profession or just a side line like so many games.

So the gathering professions of Butchering and Scavanging allow you to gather items off of animals (for butchering) and humanoids (for Scavanging).  What you will get are things like insects or animal parts which can be used in Apothecary to make potions, or you may get things like coins or trinkets which can be used to make Talismans.   Talisman making is not in as of yet, so I do not know much about it, but I woudl think they work like enchantments in other games, allowing you to add abilities to items.

Apothecary allows you to take specific componenst to make potions.  You can make things like AP regen, healing and defensive potions to list a few. You use different ingreients to make each type of potion. You add additional items you buy off the merchant or find to make the potion stable and to increase either the output or effectiveness of the potion.

Each component has a level, you can only make items within your learned level, whcih you do by making potions.   When you place an ingredient into the UI, you get a meter as to the chances of the potion being successful.  You can add water or items of different types and levels to increase the chance of success.  You can add other items also to increase the effectiveness.  You can only add 3 additional items to the key ingredient.  If you succeed in crafting the potion you may get a bump in your skill level.  If you fail, you may lose the container you were using (I have not yet lost anythign but the container).

Cultivation allows you to use seeds you find by scavanging or through drops or bought.  You plant the seeds into your plot, which is just the UI.  You need to add fertilizer, water etc at different times of the gow process whcih can take a bit of time (I have not done this in a long while, so taking it from memory). When done you can reap the harvest, or if it fails I think you get some of the seeds back.  I found this craft exceedingly boring, so never took it up too high.

I did take my apothecary up above 100, and was makin some decent potions, but in all, the potions are not too effective.  You are better off getting a priest to buff you and a healer to heal you.  I have yet to have a potion save my life in combat.

My hopes are that they take this concept and build upon it to have a much richer crafting system in the future, allowing the crafting of other items that will be of grat use, such as weapons and armor, same as DAOC, but I really think they don't want that for some reason ... but one could hope.

Draeghor pretty much summed it up.

The big seller to the crafting system is a lack of recipe finding.  you basically experiement with your ingredients and find out recipes that way.  Then you add stablizers and boosters to the mixture for that extra kick.

There is no armor crafting, however you do craft the trinkets and gems to place into armor slots, allowing you to further customize an armor piece, or you can buy a completely bank armor peice and fully customize it with gems.

In the end the crafting system is designed for you to take whateve ritems you get while adventuring, smash them together, and gian skill while doing it.  They made the system so you would not have to craft 500 useless items just to gain skill like other games force players to do.  They basically got rid of the crafting treadmill and made it experimental instead.

So that people could cry either about how much better or how much worse crafted gear is than dropped or RR gear etc. etc?

I'll be happy enough if they keep it to consumables.
