Opinions on my new gaming rig?

Gamefreek333Gamefreek333 Member Posts: 166

Here's my new gaming rig, and I plan to run WAR on it at max settings (I'm pretty sure it'll be able to though), I'm just trying to future proof it, so here it is:

Antec 900

Western Digital 640GB

Corsair 750W

G. Skill 4GB (2x2GB)

eVGA 780i

Q6600 Kentsfield

eVGA 9800 GTX Plus

Sony NEC Optiarc Black

Acer 22" Monitor

It comes out to be $1204.93 but I'm not gonna be getting the monitor for a while, so it should be around $1004 without. I think I might've posted this before, but I can't quite remember, but if I did I know I've made some updates from that. So let me know what you think, and if you know of anything better that would lower the price please let me know, thanks so much everyone (I think I might be missing a component, cause in Newegg, the price seemed kind of cheap, so please let me know if I'm forgetting something)!

I think everyone will call this.

    "9800 GTX Black Edition"

Its overpriced for the quality you get.  The HD4850 is cheaper and performs better.  There is a reason people are saying AMD hit a homerun with the HD4xxx cards.

Other then that I can only nitpick.  The monitor you chose has only a 700:1 contrast ratio and a 5ms response time.  However, its good for the price and size.  Also have you thought about a Samsung Spinpoint HDD.  They have a big cache and pretty descent response time for around the same price.

It is? I thought it was a pretty good deal cause Compusa was selling it fifty bucks cheaper than newegg, and I do want the HD 4850, but I didn't know if it would be compatible with my motherboard. Is every graphics card compatible with every motherboard, as long as the motherboard supports its interface? That's what made me go with the 9800 GTX

You can use ATI cards on a NVidia mobo, you just can't crossfire.

Awh, really? Damn, I really wanted to do Crossfire. Would you recommend the 9800 GTX Plus?

Go with the GIGABYTE GA-X48-DS4 instead. It will let you crossfire your ATI's,

The 4870x2 is overkill for a 22 inch monitor.

If you have no plans for SLI then I suggest a P45 board. They are stable and not as issue laden as the Nvidia boards. If you want xfire get a P45 with 2 PCIE lanes. They will run in 8x8 but it is cheaper then a x38/48 board. The 780i is a waste of money. Eitrher use the change for a 4870 or a second 4850.

I'm definetly gonna do SLI, with the 9800 GTX+ though. The problem is, is that I read several reviews on it and they all say it's rather large, so I'm kind of scared of it not fitting or something. Do you know if it would fit or not in my case?

Yes they should fit no problem I would think, though that mid tower might be a little tight. I like full towers myself...

Now I'm thinking about doing an AMD Build since my case is gonna have adequate cooling. So here it is:

    Case: Antec 900

    Hard Drive: 250GB Seagate Barracuda

    Motherboard: MSI K9A2 Platinum

    Power Supply: Corsair 750W

    RAM: G. Skill 2x1GB

Processor: AMD Phenom 9850 Black Edition

Operating System: Vista Home Premium 64-Bit

    Graphics Card: Sapphire HD 4850

It comes to be a total of $983.31. Should I go with the Intel build or AMD build? I think the AMD would be better, because it's cheaper, and I'm going to do Crossfire with with the HD 4850's. Do let me know what you guys think. Thanks for your help!

the hd 4850 does not outperform the 9800gtx, it comes close.  PC gamer oct. issue mentions it.

and it is also not cheaper they are both $199 after nvidia lowered all their prices.
