Single Player is the new MMORPG?

I'm curious to see how many people have given up on the MMORPG industry for the time being and switched back to playing single-player games. I for one have grown tired of WoW and have had my fingers burnt too many times on disappointing new releases that don't live up to the hype.

I read a lot of threads where people claim that they are only playing a particular MMO until the next big thing arrives, often giving the impression that they aren't particularly enjoying it. I kind of got like this with WoW until I realised enough was enough and the only reason I was logging in was to talk to guildmates. It was at this point that the game had become nothing more than a glorified chatroom that I was paying a monthly fee for the honour of using.

If this sounds familiar to anyone, I'd urge them to dig out an old favourite singe player game or check out one currently on the market for a change of scene. This is what I did and I was suprised at what a breath of fresh air it was: no idiots, griefers, ninjas, downtime or lag. Also, the single player games coming soon for PC excite me a lot more than those of the MMORPG industry (Spore, Starcraft II, Red Alert 3, Diablo III, The Sims 3 to name a few that interest me personally).

WAR was the last hope for the near future in terms of MMO's and I have to say it has left me severly underwhelmed to the point that I won't be buying it on release.

Anyway ... let me know where you guys stand on this.

I think MMORPGs have encouraged the ridiculous idea that a single genre, or even a single game, can and should keep you entertained indefinately.   This is very wrong imo.   Do you only ever watch one genre of movie, eat one flavour of ice cream, read one genre of fiction?

The people that spend every minute of their spare time on WoW and then after 3 years come here to post how much the game sucks, how terrible the MMORPG genre is, are missing the point entirely.

MMORPGs shouldn't be the only genre of game you play.  They can be your favourite genre, but why limit yourself to the experiences of one genre?   It turns you into a babbling lunatic, that makes you post things like "why are MMORPGs all about grinding!?"

Go play another genre for a while.  But don't play one exclusively for 2 years and then post on an FPS board saying "why are FPS games all about shooting people?".

Here's some games you should try btw:

    Civlization 4

Oblivion (Morrowind if you're not fussed about graphics)

    Company of Heroes

    C&C3

    The Orange Box

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

I played Warcraft II (via Kali and then Blizzard's BattleNet) online for well over a decade before finally retiring.  It's not even an MMO, it's a RTS game.  Did I do other things but play Warcraft?  Sure, but that is not the point.  The MMORPG industry is basically a computerized version of the old D&D campaigns people used to play, and those campaigns could, did, and still do last years if not decades.  The reason MMOs are not meeting that quality standard is because they are trying to appeal to a mass of players that don't really want to be playing a MMORPG, will metagame their way out of enjoying the existing content, generally ruin the experience for others, and put demands on the developers that often prevent the developers from catering to their real customers.

MMOs are often trying to be the ultimate single/multi-player game for anyone who would purchase a fancy looking retail box.  It's getting everyone in the MMORPG industry (customers, marketers, developers) into heaps of trouble.

I think ive slowly moved back to single player games, im still subscribed to CoH and FFXI for the time being though.

Been playing alot of The Witcher, Mass effect, and Devil may cry 4 personally.

Thinking of going back to the original NWN.

I've played other MMOs but I always found myself bouncing between WoW, EQ2, and CoV.

I think I've been WoW free for almost a year now and don't plan to return.  Guild politics and gear grinding ruined that one.

AoC I thought was going to be my game till a June 9th patch decided to introduce gray maps and hanging zone loading.

Since that failed for me I went to EQ2 to catch on the Living Legacy promo and decided to grab a station pass.  Since I failed once again in finding a guild that viewed every member equally and didn't enjoy the lower pop games on that I've decided to just forgo MMOs.

Unlike some I'm unable to return to my first MMO Asheron's Call 2 because the powers behind that decided to shut that game down.

I'll be back to MMOs when an exploration & skill game comes out and the grind is upfront or gone instead of this backdoor materialism with this gear grinding garbage.  About the best I can describe my disagreement with that state of things.

For now RPGs like the WItcher, Neverwinter Nights series, and the Wii console will keep my occupied.  I just wish PC RPGs wouldn't be so few now and the focus wouldn't be on Sci-Fi so much like Bioware is doing with Mass Effect.  I like my fantasy or mix of it at least.

I hope someone releases a good Shadowrun single player RPG in the ilk of the Sega Genesis version so I forget about MMOs totally.  Either that or a good single player Phantasy Star.  Which a game like those would do.

I have never given up with MMORPG and never given up with single player games, they mix for me, what I don't find in a MMORPG I might find in a single player game, what I don't find in a single player game I might find in a MMORPG, maybe that is why I still am able to enjoy some of hte MMORPG out here, just not in the way I thought this genre would evolve into. But like I said we have to thank all those new people who seem clueless about this genre who are bringing this genre down.

And this is why I feel people should try more games in different genre's, maybe just maybe we will get more realisitc expectations within this genre instead of the game bashing we see on forums like this.

Sad part is that many people simply refuse to see and understand that many burn themselfs out in this genre, but unfortuanly many will always take the easy road and blame everything else but themselfs.

one of my main reasons for leaving AoC was i felt like i was paying a monthy sub to play an offline game, even though it was a week into the games release and was ment to have loads of subs i never seen more than 3-4 ppl at any given time from the time i started to when i quit.

I'll hang about till another MMO catches my eye but there nothing coming out that looks any good to me .

I think this is another case of a jaded MMO player. Of course something different will be refreshing for a change. Try playing a SP as long as you play an MMO.

I think that long-term out-and-out single player games are finished.

I do play other games besides MMOs, so I don't think they should keep me entertained indefinitely. On a side note: MMOs are a bit different, because of the monthly fee to play them. You would expect them to last a bit longer or offer a bit more than single player games.

At the moment, nothing but 'generic MMO #6832' is being released, and I think that's what people these days are having trouble with. I know I do.

i flick between my PS3, Dwarf fortresses, TF2, Making History and LOTRO all the time.  playing only MMO's leads to one thing...being burnt out.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Props for mentioning Dwarf Fortress - now there is an indie game that is truly a labour of love and a triumph of gameplay over graphics (ASCII ftw!). Imagine that concept in an MMO! *drool*...
