most beta test to see if they will like the game and get into it early
the first and 2th options.
both to help a game, fixing bugs, and to play it as soon has posible.
1st and 3rd. i hate it when i see people sign up who are only there to play the game as soon as possible. those are the people who get to max lvl in the first week and its sad.
PotBS beta was ok. i needed about 3 days or so with the game to find all the bugs that would stop me. i also found out you cant make a profit off hauling goods from port to port...so i never subscribed.

I gt to be honest and say 1,2 and 3.
I have beta tested a few games but never ever a game I wasnt 100% interested in so ofc I want the game to be the best it can be,Also I am interested in it and want to play it so yeah I want to play it as soon as possible and ofc I want to see come nearer to release if the game has built itself into something I want to buy and sub too.
I dis-like the people who just want to play for free a game without ever really testing(doing the job)I have beta tested some terrible games but stuck with them until either they became vapor or released and I wasnt interested in subbing to them.
Like I said I am being honest and 1,2 and 3 for me.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

To test the game and see if I like it.
I don't care to improve the game in beta, it's not my job to develop games and since a demo is often the beta itself, I treat it as a preview to a game.
Getting to be the first to see+explore AND it's a lot of fun to go bug hunting
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Starts off finding bugs, but if i notice bug reports and early suggestions are just ourright ignored then it is just an option to preview the game.
ALl free to play games ignore suggestions, and the recent p2p games seem to be following suit.

Since they force you to preorder to beta test, I won't do ANY work for them. I'd just play the game to see if I like it or not.
Well yeah I gotta admit, I start out with selfish reasons (to see if I'll want to play it / pay for it). Usually if I don't like the game I don't go out of my way to find bugs either, but if I do see potential in it, I'd really work hard to contribute and all.

actually, i changed my mind....
probably the #1 reason players beta test is because it's free
There are only 2 options, the first and the last 3 choices which can have their percentages added together to represent the majority of players.
You either volunteer your time to test to help a profit company become more profitable (yeah right who is kidding us they are doing this) or to play the game early for yourself which includes deciding if you like the game and possibly uncovering bugs or loopholes to be used as an advantage when the game goes live.
To test the game. Most betas wipe so I don't see why people hard core grind.
Depends on if the game has potential. If the game has potential then I suggest things and report bugs. If not I drop it in a flash.
"To test the game for myself to see If I will want to buy it"
But then again, it's "beta". But yeah, that's the main reason.

Personally for me it kind of goes like this:
If I see something I might want to buy I'll sign up for beta. There are a few reasons and they aren't exactly listed by the OP.
First it gives a glimpse at the development team on the game, how they work , how they communicate etc
Do they seem to have an actual clue..
Do they listen to player feedback/reports
Do they fix bugs, exploits etc
***
I guess as the years went by I realized that the game was only part of the equation...
Plus it really won't matter how much you want to help finish an MMO.. if the dev teams is really only interested in pushing it out the door by X date.. and retaining the "vision" even if nobody wants to buy it
blah blah
the end
Oh and if it helps.. I've pretty much beta tested every MMO that was released in North America since Ultima Online... Altho I was not in the AC1 beta as I was somewhere that I didn't have access to a computer at that time (no obviously not prison as they have computer access har har).

i generally only beta test games towards the end. I have no interest in reporting bugs/exploits or testing and the only reason I do it is to see if the game is something I want to buy.
In away thats also a test for devs, people who are fastest highest lvl they can tweak game better.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
Anyone who says they beta test solely to find bugs and improve the quality of the product is a liar. If this were the case you'd be testing "Moku Bakuchi Bango World Story Online 3".
You must have an interest in the product in the first place, which means that you want to play it.... Secondary from that you'll fire off a bug report when you find one (or if you're a really good tester and you'll have read the known issues list and don't even have to report many of the bugs you find).
I agree IF they make you preorder, very few games actually make you preorder. Only the big titles that can get away with it. Even they let in beta testers before they let in the pre order drones.
I have beta tested tons of games and I have never nor will I ever pre order a mmo I havent played.
I am pretty good at finding unique bugs/glitches so I always find some, but my main goal is to help shape the game into a better all around mmo.
Own, Mine, Defend, Attack, 24/7
First its to see if I liked it and if I don't then I write a massive post on the beta forums about everything they need to change and why they need to push the game back or it'll fail followed by a forum ban because the developers can't take the truth and everyone on the beta forum are fanbois and scream troll even though you're giving the right feedback.
If I do like it then I just report bugs but fucking ain't wasting my time playing a game I hate when I'm not being paid.
1st and 2nd option for me.
