You must use IE to download this product as well, Open source browsers will not allow you to access the site I believe. Don't know about free ones, but if you ever have the funds and desire you could always pick up Adobe Premiere or AfterEffects. Both are very easy to use in my opinion, and yield professional results in the right hands.

Windows movie maker is free. If you have XP you should already have it if you installed service pack 2. It's under start menu.
Anyway, you can slice with it and change the resolution etc, simple things, if that's all you need it works great really.
Just so you know guy, video editing can really consume a ton of hours.
