Battle tactics, and class, please help :)

I played the weekend and absolutely loved it !  BUT I have a class problem:

I usually don't like to play my main in open weekends or beta as to not get class burn out. So during the weekend I played a High Elf, Shadow Warrior. I'm sure it's a good class, and my ranged bow seemed to have good dps, however my targets kept moving in and out of the fight only for them to retreat for healing. This gave me a feeling of not contributing to the cause as much as I would like in RvR.  Maybe many got this feeling and is not unique for any class.

Shadow Warrior's also have 3 stances kind of like Warrior's in WoW, making it hard to setup my action bar. It would also default to a stance that I did not like when I died along with a cool down timer of like 5 sec. ( this sucked if you hit the wrong stance in battle). At around level 11 I begin to get used to it however I still did not like Shadow Warrior's.

My main was gonna be a Dwarf Engineer. But people are saying that the turrets sometimes don't fire, and dps is kind of low. I had noticed that placing turrets are hard because the battle front lines move a lot  form watching Youtube clips and during the game.

So any suggestions as a good class for PvP, Order and Destruction ?

All the classes are good. Both Order and Destruction.

Or are you looking for someone to tell you which is the most powerful class in the game?

This is a hard question with this game.  The classes are all very different and interesting to play.  First the ones you have already looked at:

Shadow Warrior - Ranged offensive DPS.  The problem is you were fighting in a Zerg and what you experienced always happens no matter what class.  The fact is you do good damage from range, and you drop like a fly.  You will have to be stealthy for real, not by clicking a stupid button.  You will have to hide behind objects and roll with a group.  Let them get into a fight then pick their target and rain down on them.  Shadow Warrior develops into a really fun class if you play it right.

Engineer - Ranged defensive DPS.  This is the same boat as Magus.  They don't have very great survivability, their dps from the character is lacking, and their pets dps is lacking.  These are made to play defensive which is a good choice on Order because a lot of the time Order will be defending.  Destruction is going to have the higher pop.  These type of classes can be fun because players leave your pet alone.  Make sure to put it on agressive, and then also to attack whatever you are attacking.  Don't expect gratification from this class.  You basically wittle away at all enemies.  Right now this and the Magus are the two sub par classes in the game in my opinion.  Mythic already adressed this and said they will most likely be reworked.  Either way if the idea of Defensive DPS sounds good to you then go for it.

So now I will assume you want to play ranged DPS.  The other combos to look at are:

Bright Wizard/Sorceress:  These are pure ranged DPS.  They get a root, and they blast the hell out of everything while causing damage to themselves.  They are very fragile and you will die often.  Play like a Shadow Warrior hiding from the enemy and raining down on them.  These classes are fun for sure.

Squig Herder:  Kind of like Magus/Engineer character wise but with a moving pet.  The pet has skills that cause good damage, and you can do things like make them explode for great AOE damage which in turn let's your next summon be instant.

Now if you want to contribute more to Zerg type RvR then I would highly suggest any tank.  They are all fun, they live the longest and will make you feel more useful and powerful in RvR.

Lastly if you want to rip casters to shreds go with Witch Elf or Witch Hunter.  These guys are fragile though so you will expect to die more than probably any class in the game.  If you are good they have stealth like skills for more survivability and roots, but you still have to get close to the enemy.

I decided after playing 9 classes to level 10+ that I had to have at least 4 active characters.  My choices are:

Witch Hunter - I love these guys in small group combat.

Warrior Priest - I love healing and beating on people with a giant hammer.

Chosen - Tanking in large Zerg like RvR and small scale RvR is a lot of fun and provides a different experience.

Sorceress - I love doing heavy damage from range.

See I have 2 Order, 2 Chaos.  1 Healer, 1 Melee DPS, 1 Ranged DPS, 1 Tank.  I will get them all equipped and good to go for Tier 1 RvR then pick one to take towards rank 40 while playing with all of the alts at the same time.  The game is fun with different classes and you will advance RvR'ing.

    Hope this helps.

As for the Engineer turrets- You will have to keep moving them if you're on the attack. If you're defending however, the class really shows it's spark. Turrets don't ALWAYS fire, make take the enemy running out of distance of the turrent and running back into it. Hopefully we see a fix on this in Open Beta.

And about the 'cheap' tactics in RvR- Running back for heals is part of the game, part of the game that both sides have equal advantage. You'll notice this to be most annoying during Keep Seiges. Unfortunately the melee classes are prone to die in this case as the healers dont want to get too close to the battle in the range'rs view. I found myself (Rune Priest) being camped out on the ledge of the keep tossing heals down to my allys on the front lines (right outside the door). Every once in a while I noticed a tank standing behind me with half life. Gawing over my shoulder for a heal.

It seems like the Healing classes were alot more abundant during the low levels (1-6). But once you get up to 10-20 you'll notice only the serious healers stuck to their class. Then agian, its beta preview weekend, maybe alot of people just wanted to test out a healer as a possible alt in the future?

I read your post a couple of times and I was just trying to find out what you really wanted to know.

It really is just down to your own personal preference of play style, looks, race etc.

Nobody can really suggest a 'good class for PvP' to you unless I guess you're very specific in what you are looking for and how you like to play.

Sorry if I came across the wrong way, but your post on face value appears to be another 'What's the best class in the game to wtfpwn in RvR'?

I see your point Noggin, but I only played one class, it's hard to pick a class as real time play would change people's mind's. So I was asking for other that had played real time on some classes.

If you had a Warrior Priest in that group your tank wouldn't even need to retreat. I was doing RVR with a warband group and me(Warrior Priest- HeranKarr) and a fellow Swordmaster left the group and took a keep on our own until a massive group came with zealots and tanks, then we were totally wasted.

    This is not a game.
