Space Marines and the 40k MMO

SeijishinjinSeijishinjin Member UncommonPosts: 5

Okay, we all know that Space Marines are godly.  How the HELL would that translate into an MMO, where balance is paramount?!  And we ALL want to play them, but not at the expense of Veteran Guardsmen, or Howling Banshees, or Chaos Cultists...

SO, I had an epiphany!  A rocking idea of how to implement them for play AND have everything work out JUST AS PLANNED.

We all know LOTRO, right?  Monster Play.  A separate PVP map, where you make a max-level character and gain PVP ranks to make him better.  Translate that to the 40k MMO!  Make a separate PVP battleground in the Eye of Terror, and have two sides: Space Marines, and Chaos Space Marines.  Then, have several archetypes to choose from.  For instance, as a Space Marine:  Assault Marines (MDPS), Librarians (RDPS/Support), Chaplains (Buff/Heals), Veteran Marines (Tanks).  Of course there'd be the translating ones for Chaos.

Doing it like this, EVERYONE could play their Space Marines, their "main," AND PVP, and not upset the balance! :D  Of course SMs and CSMs would be there ONLY for PVP, but... c'mon.  Why else play them if you can't use them to tear apart your foes?!

We are prolly at least a year from even seeing anything on this game.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

I just dont get why games workshop would want to release 2 warhammer MMOs soo close to each other. It just seems as though the games will overshadow one another.

I hope they drop this project. Don't get me wrong I love the franchize, play both the table top game and the pc games and even use to subscribe to their Mag, but maybe cuz of that I just don't want the lore get ruined by the mmo genera, for me it just doesn't fit at all. Just my 2 cents

That "monster play" in LotR is one of the things that has given MMORPG's problems. Compartment / mini gaming like "Club Penguin".

I seriously doubt they will go with an idea like that.  Space Marines are a staple of 40k and will probably be treated as such. We will see.

If people can play Space Marines I'll cry myself to sleep each and every night. Imperial Guards are the way to go (+ they're cooler. COMMISARS & CATACHAN JUNGLE FIGHTERS FTW! )

I  agree, this mmo , now that i think about it, is a bad idea.  Only possible way to balance would be to perhaps only let people play as space marines or chaos marines.

The real problem is Imperial Guard, on which I had a thought. Make Imperial Guard a pet class.

If you choose Guardsman as your class, you become a Guard squad leader. You get a squad of maybe about three Guardsmen that function as your pets. Individually weak, but overwhelming with numbers--that's the Guard!

They only signed the papers on the deal what a year ago?  I doubt well see anything substatial about Warhammer 40k for atleast 2 to 3 years (as in beyond news letter etc info).    They've not had any major press releases, photos or design talks...pretty much nothing is known about the 40k MMO.  So techincally they aren't releasing to close together..besides many of us playing WAR are fantasy not sci fi fans.

I dunno, I'm playing WAR but the 40K Dawn of War games rock my socks off...I love 'em...I wouldn't mind a 40K MMO one bit.

But yeah, it's probably 3+ years away at this point. Not a bad idea about the Imperial Guards as actual squads controlled by the player - numbers was always their advantage.

It would be like in City of Villains, with the MasterMind. Have pets to do his biddings while hes far behind doing what he can best, shout at them. ^^

I on the other hand hope that there will be Orks, bad-ass Space Orks. ^^

Would be awsome to be able to play a Nob in Mega Armour. Ork in a can of whop-ass. ^^

As much as I would love to see this game, I'm having a hard time with the idea.  As a seasoned-40K player (eldar and necrons, best ever), I just see too many lore-related issues that an MMO might crash into.  Considering the Imperium's view toward aliens (alliances are the exception, not the rule), it would just be have a similar set up to what they have in WAR.

I'd love to see it work out, as the MMO needs a kick-ass Sci Fi game, but we need something that holds true to the lore.

Personally I wouldn't want anyone to repeat Turbines take on this with LOTRO. Namely taking a IP perfect for factional PvP and making it a pure PvE experience. Monster Play just doesn;t cut it: a single map where one side is clearly and hopelessly imbalanced against the other with the premise that 'the good guys are supposed to win'.

All in all I played LOTRO for 13 months and whilst it is a full featured, nicely put together MMO, it's hum drum at the end as there is no pvp. In the general game play and levelling there is no risk at all, or looking over your shoulder whilst you are running round. Of course, I'm probably in the minority as it continues to do well with about 400k active subs. What heights might it have climbed to though?

But Warhammer is a separate issue and 40K is all about war. Not duking it out with repetitve computer AI. I really hope they put the pvp first here as they should do with all Warhammer games.

It's really not that close. Seeing how they just started this year for drawing up the concepts of the game and MMOs usually taking at least 4 years to develop, we won't be playing this game until at least 2012 or 2013.

That would actually work.  Some orc units could also get a similar system (I hate the idea of an Ork grunt taking down a space marine, seems wrong).

As for this competing with the Warhammer MMO, I don't see it.  40k is a ranged/melee hybrid, where most warriors can use both sorts of weapons on the battlefield.   That means a lot more shooting, a lot more tactical combat, a lot more ranged, and a lot more of an interesting game.

Also Space Marines better be able to tear apart the guardsmen like nothing else.
