Neocron 2: Database Failure

AdminAdmin Administrator RarePosts: 5,623

Reakktor reported today that they suffered an unexpected database failure on their "Saturn" server which caused a data loss as deep as Sept 5, 2004.  Here is a quote from their forums:

Posted by Holger Nathrath (Developer):

Unfortunately I have to inform you of a problem that arose with the server Saturn shortly before the launch of Neocron 2. Because a technical failure of the Saturn database server and an extremely unlikely chain of events that occurred with the multi-layered backup system, the game data has been thrown back to the state of September 5 2004.

Fully aware of the repercussions of this fact, we thought hard about how proceed so the effects on you would be minimal. The options available to us were a rollback to the status of September 5 or to use a character data snapshot from Monday September 20 for the character transfer. We decided to go with the latter option, as even though you won't be able to make final adjustments to your characters for the transfer to Neocron 2, the effective loss of played time will only be 3 days. We will still perform the rollback to the 5th to allow further usage of the server Saturn. However, any changes to the characters will have no effect on the transfer to Neocron 2.

Please note: The character snapshot that was created for the character transfer test is not a complete mirror of the database and can not be used for a rollback nor can it be merged with the backup from the 5th of September.

This whole problematic does only apply to the server Saturn. Other realms are completely unaffected by this.

We'd like to apologize to all Saturn players for this inconvenience. We know how important Neocron, your characters and items are to you. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it, it's a case of force majeure. The solution we chose should hopefully minimize the damage. We hope for your understanding.

Yep, and that was the last drop. I have cancelled my account and removed everything related to neocron from my drives. Don't play neocron, or anything else made by KK.

Yep, this is just really bad form. It will be interesting to see if their Force Majeure claim holds up if anyone goes after them. Well, actually I doubt that anyone will because who plays Neocron anymore LOL...

Open Beta of Neocron 2 was a disaster from marketing point of view.

Full of bugs (some of them more than 2 years old and still not fixed), memory leaks, unfinished features and lacking many things promissed. No support for new players, missing manual, no visible GM presence, no official support etc.

And now hundreds of ppl that still played on most populated english speaking Neocron 1 server got ****ed up by Reakktor one more time. Reakktor is incompetent, understuffed, slow at fixing bugs and exploits, does not keep promises. Lacks money, programming skills and communication skills needed to run a MMORPG.

Geez - this game has been a trainwreck since it launched. I don't know how it keeps on managing to survive after all that's happened. And now this. :P

actually, at last check...coDi was the only coder they had. Yes...that's right. They built an MMORPG with one guy writing code.

Wow, this is one major fuck-up. Has anything like this happened to any other p2p MMORPG?

It's a shame that this has happened because although I am not going to be playing NC2 (I have just got bored with the concept) I was hoping that Reakktor would manage to pull it off in some kind of competent manner.

Still it is only Saturn that got screwed, and having played Saturn for a while it was fairly apparent that a significant chunk of the playerbase on that server were out only to trash the game for everybody else. Not much of a loss if they all leave. Hell, it may even help the game out.

Not true. There have been at least three for almost the entire time it's been in development. I believe there were only two full-time at one point due to one taking a sabatical but contractors filled in then.

Well it seems they are getting better now as the latest 2 weeks was a success for droners

And I think they got at least 4 coders now anyway

And if you like a game you won´t cry over a rollback

I was banned for 3 weeks in SWG and suddenly they did

send mail and said they were sorry for banning me

I did not die over it even if I lost house and stuff

I play to get me stuff. If I had it all why bother to play at all ?

What no backup? ::::04:: it's very surprising and a little unprofessional that a company in this day and age is unable to make provision for an event such as this occurring.

  • SkellySkelly Member Posts: 7

They use backups yes but seems everything was just a bad timing.

Lots of stuff did burn up at same time....

    Including the backup image
