I was wondering how good of a game this is since I do not know anybody that owns it. It does look like a good game but what are some of the best things about it.
i played it for the trail but i feel its more of a game for the highend players you need to be around lvl 150 ish for the new add on alien invasion but i had fun its just like eq but based in future and more lvl s i prefer eve online im my oppinion cos it dosent reward the players who play the longest as you can train your skills when your not online but thats just my opinion i like to try and play most of the mmogs out but i think ill stick with eve-online look out for a trail and give it ago all i can say really

AO is an excellent game, no matter what level you are. The newest expansion is geared to high levels, but there's enough content while getting there to kill a good two years
its not really geared towards high levels. Dont know what you guys are talking about. My guild has low level Alien Raids once in a while. When we get enough people on though
It IS geared toward high level characters because that is what the majority of the player base is. AO is not adding expansions to aquire new players as much as it is trying to hold on to the old ones.
You must realize this game is played out. Its been around for years and it shows. Look at the old style graphics and you can see this is not a current game. If you do decide to play this game do not be surprised to find yourself very lonely and underequipped at low levels as this game is almost entirely populated by AO vets. Any low level people you see are likely either playing the free trial OR they are low lvl alts of high lvl characters twinked and buffed to the max.
Just a fair warning. You are better off waiting for or joining a newer game.
ROLEPLAYERS UNITE!!!!!

I played it for a good while and found it to be my second favorite mmo i've played and i've played the majority of them. It has a great community, good customer support and all sorts of cool stuff to do and explore.
The graphics aren't the greatest, kind of an old eq skin look to it which isn't that bad unless you have got to have the graphics but other than that the world has a really cool look to it.
If you like eq type of play with a little more interaction during combat or you're a big fan of sci fi games then i would highly recommend trying this game, especially since there is a free trial download.
this is a good game, i mean come on i got to level 45 in a 7 day trial. played maybe 4 hours a day. it was entertaining, easy to play and understand. had lots of stuff/missions to do. the graphics arent top notch but i can live with that. overall its a good game, but to each his own i guess.

This is the best description of what AO is now (post SL and AI expansions)
------------------------------ You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith
In answer to the oirginal question. AO seems like a good game from what I've seen. It has a large community, it has a simple yet effective system and the garphics are decent. (Not Stunning, but certainly good enough). The Shadowlands explasion looked really good and wasn't just tailored to high levels but mid levels as well. I can't comment on the latest expansion....
OK now to throw the fox amongst the chickens...
You cannot Roleplay properly in any MMORPG to date so why bother to pretend that you can. Eve is not an exception to this.
a) Your actions are limited
b) Storyline is static and not tailored, player based storylines don't really count becuase they always end up either being petty power stuggles or a leaderboard.
c) you can't communicate properly through typing, or acrosss low quality microphones. And even so communication is not the only part of roleplaying, but the only part that is really feasible in the games at present.
d) If you want to roleplay... Never Winter Nights etc is the game as you have a GM. Or stick to table top where roleplaying is complete
Roleplaying games strength comes from the freedom of action and the ability for other players to really get to know an alter ego. I have yet to see an MMOG player truely playing their alter ego because it usually ends up damaging the players chances for development in some way. Plus there is no real reward short of self satisfaction. Other players don't know it, the game world isn't effected by it. In table top the players know when someone is roleplaying or when they are not... Plus the GM can reward the player for their efforts and the roleplaying actually makes the game more fun. I don't see that the same holds for online games. Most people play themselves rather than an alter ego. Or when they do it is usually in the form of taking out their agressions in a fashuion they would not do in RL.
Sorry but after 5 years of playing various MMOG I really feel this is the case.
I played AO for almost a year. Had a char 200+ and a few others.
AO STILL is a great game, but i would now only recommend it for those who have yet to play it or those who had an account some time ago, but never played it much.
For veterans AO is done as far as i can tell. There are a host of complaints about the new patch, its going to take at least as long to settle in as Shadowlands did. Its targeted at high lvls primarily, so if you are intending to play it with A.I, then be prepared to put a fair bit of time into it...
But for new players, the entire world is off course new, and that world is still terrific. Shadowlands now is pretty well sorted, so for new players its a good time to try.
For veterans though its differant because there looking to make the most of this buggy expansion NOW....Rubi Ka and SL are yesterdays news for them..they need something new today and atm, A.I is beta basically...
hmmm... struck a nerve have I. But was it about the fact that you really don't have a reason for your objections, or was it the fact that you really are a pubersant with an attitude problem and acni. I'll give you the benifit of the doubt and go for option 1.

AO is still FREEEE to download. Try it out for your ownself. It's FREEE you have nothing to lose! See for yourself if you like it, and how much you like it:
BTW, I recoomend you make your first character NOT be nano-tech or nano-mage Breed.
For profession pick Martial Artist. Its the easiest to play while learning how the game works. Order of professions easiest first: Martial Artist, Soldier, Adventurer, Meta-Physicist. Then the rest. And Nano-tech/Nano-mage the hardest.
Browse the official AO forums for tons of info, and answers to the most popular questions. Here are the forums for each profession:
Don't go by what I say (I like AO, been playing it for a solid 2 years), or what anyone else says - good or not good...... find out for yourself. It is free, you have nothing to lose. And if you have more questions, post them on the AO forums here at this site MMORPG.com (click on Anarchy Online in the menu on the left side of this page).
ok i played the game for a year....and what i have to say is, if you are jsut starting i suggest playing as a soldier first till yo uget the hang of it then go to a more complicated char like a nanotech or engineer or shade. like when i was level 60 i still didnt understand a few thing about item ups and stuff. so theres a huge learning curve, But its a great game i suggest trying it.
AO is a great game and the classes are hilarious... A lot to learn, there are thousands of little details to keep track of, but that adds to the fun and make it a lot more complicated and mature than ost things out there. From a bad start it has turned out to be one of the best games in the MMO market, teaching other developers how to solve things.
Pity it is a bit old... If they released an AO II right now, then I would buy a one year account in a second.
Only game I wait for right now: Imperator. Go Mythic!

I have played AO on and of since release. I quit totally 3 times, and I have returned twice, (I am no longer playing)..
Things is they slowly destroyed their own game with very very questionable decisions. SL could have been an enormous hit, considering the time and effort they put into it I only wich they would have diverted that energy into making AO a better game, in my book AO and AL are 2 totally different games and do not´even belong togehter.
I have yet to try AI to any extent but it seems they tried hard and succeeded with destroying it even more. SL took a great toll on the guildless players and on the small guilds. AI started destroying the community even before it was released when peopel realised they NEED an uber guild to get anything out of this expansion.
BUT, if you have never ever tried AO before then I storngly reccomend you to try it. It has a few years on its back and as such there are tons and tons of content for all lvls. The fast lvl system and quick combat system can be very addictive and fun. Not until you reach like 205+ (title level7) will you actually run into the mad mad grind.
It has a lot more months of play in it then most other games, at least the new ones and is only rivalled by EQ and AC when it comes to this. There is no harm in trying it allthough the trial do not consist of AI I hear but aside from the new backyard (training area), there is little AI content for the new player anyhow so you do not really need it, actually I would advice people to get AI only if they are indeed in a large or semilarge guild or have access to a LOT of cash, or both.

Im a hard-core AO basher myself, since they more or less raped the entire community with their freaking too-early-releases. They tend to throw out half-assed-finished games, though AI seems somewhat finished, not that theres that much in it anyway... a few aliens and items and a meaningless town system that most games put into the game for free.....

Funcom really need to learn the difference between a nerfstick and the nerfing equivalent of releasing a full spread from a Typhoon class submarine armaments on a single profession. Instead of constantly utterly destroying a profession and then rebuild it in a later patch just to launch another spread yet again why not try to do it in small steps?
The company more then the game really chased me away on all occasions, I could have lived with most of the changes but the attitude from them on the other hand one should not just swallow and pretend it did not exist. Not that they are that much different from most other companies it is just that I know them so well after such a long time. Anyhow, try it and come back teling us what ya think, what little guidance I can give I will sure try.
