do yourself a favor and look up 5 posts above yours. Also, since you state you have a 10 year old son, you should act more like an adult than the 10 year old. Come on, you even have a failhammer avatar. Sheesh man.

Actually, nevermind. There is no debating with you. All 243 of your posts were bashing Warhammer and half of them were edited by the moderators due to trolling, flaming, and disrespecting other posters. Wow. Here's a blog I wrote that you may be interested in reading: www.mmorpg.com/blogs/Enigma/082008/2467_What-is-a-Fanboi-and-what-is-a-hater

I have to say. I never seen a person devoting their entire mmorpg.com forum posts to one mission: hate one specific game.

    Wow.

That's scarey and really really sad lol.

Ive come across lots of people like this, people with literally hundreds upon hundreds of posts flaming the same game over and over. Whats even scarier is the people who have 5000 posts on an account created mere months ago. Can you imagine 20+ trolling posts a day?

Ive been here for a very long time and I never seen one person who sole creation on these forums were to bash one game and that's it. I cannot believe he's not banned already....some of his posts were pretty messed up

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

I hate WoW's graphics. It physically gives me nerd rage to even look at that trash. Realistic graphics are what I prefer.

WAR's graphics did at first glance remind me of WoW's but within a few minutes of playing I realized they were very different. The characters and world are more realistic and defined. WAR isn't as realisitic as I would like but they are much better than WoW's moronic kiddie style.

I understand why people think they look the same but really it's a superficial resemblance. A lot of it has to do with the similar look of the ui. Also high end graphics options were turned of for the beta. Once the release goes live and people can see WAR in all it's glory I don't think those comparisons will be made anymore.

The graphics should represent the game; dark realistic graphics may fit for a game with such content, and nice cartoony graphics for a game with, generally seen, easy content. WoW got a form of "easy" content: WoW does by means try to look dark and gloomy and neither is there really much realism to be found anywhere, and I don't think Blizzard aimed for the "dark and gloomy" crowd either. I got no problem at all with WoW's graphics and think that developers should give up the fixation on using realistic graphics since it turns out into two things: either you get nice looking graphics, waste a lot of money on it and so on and narrow down the crowd that can play the game quite severely; or you try, and fail, making the game look bad in general and terribly pixelated, unclear etc. Of the two given options I'd rather prefer to pick cartoony ones.

What I'd see more of is also dark and gloomy cartoony graphics, i.e. instead of the overly light and happy color scheme you take a darker and gloomer one and just make every more gloomy - while still not having a realistic graphic. There is by no means only the option realism or wow-clone cartoony, which is what developers need to understand.

What's with all the hate towards cartoony graphics?

Does art no longer exist? Different styles and different builds providing different structures, colors, and styles are to be neglected, because you personally don't like that their eyes are 1/3rd larger than a real life human?

Is it the hate against cartoons? I'm in my early 20s, still watch Spongebob... would you rather me watch CSI and be so inclined to be mesmorized by rape and murder because cartoons are for little kids, and murder and rape is what adults should enjoy? Doesn't make sense to me.

Why do we need to see in video games where we're supposed to relax; people chopping off model's heads, gauging out their eyes? What's next... rape video games where you press A+Right Click for positions? Not appealing for me, and I'm sure it cuts out a very large audience.

Very strange to see people that want only this or that, and then whine about how things aren't changing in the MMO industry.

To each his/her own, if you absolutely can't stand they way something looks... stay away from it or don't whine about it.

The OP has a good point.  I always find it funy that anyone who plays video games would find cartoons to be immature.  I aslo find it funny that people think blood and violence are what makes something mature.  In truth maturity has nothing to do with either of these things.  In fact a mature person can enjoy almost anything in comparison to say someone who thinks violence/realism is mature and cool.

Nah really. Graphics don't matter.  If you are having fun, who cares about the opinion about other people?  Maybe is more mature to ignore other people opinions.

Thats true, but sometimes it's good to say something when a game is being constantly trashed for being kiddy.

Its stylised, not cartoony, just like every other mmo/game out. "Cartoony" is a style. Toontown is stylised as  a cartoon.

I have come to the conclusion that anyone who makes any reference to WAR being a copy of WOW or WOWhammer or the various other wow things they say has never actually played the game.

The graphics really are not cartoony and it did not even really look like WOW at all.

Saying War is just like WOW is like saying WOW is just like EQ, or AOC, or UO, or AC, DOAC, or any other fantasy based MMORPG out there.

Well, the thing about art is everyone has ideas on what they like and what they don't.   It's a bit silly to say "you're taste in art is not the same as mine so you're an idiot".

The OP was right to mock the AoC poster who did this very thing.

FWIW, I like the art in most games, as long as it's not over the top.   I never cared much for the people art of asian games but loved their background/object art.

  • VyethVyeth Member UncommonPosts: 1,461

umm.. for those who have ever played Warcraft BEFORE it there was WoW understand that blixzzard wanted to keep the same art style for this game to have it remain TRUE to its original.. They succeeded.. Being that Warhammer doesn't have any REAL digital means of which keeping true to (Mark of Chaos maybe? Dont say Dawn of War because thats actually 40k which is different)...

I think Warhammer took the obvious "middle" road when it came to design. It is SUPPOSED to be fictional of course so they wanted it to look fantasy while not too "warped" and cartoony like wow. Buildings look like buildings and trees look like trees in Warhammer but slightly exagerated as is not the case in wow which are heavily exagerated simply because thats how the original warcraft as well as its sequels looked, most noticably warcraft 3.

Thye graphics in War work and do not look like WoW in the slightest......

Personally, I think WAR really nails the look and feel of Warhammer.  It's exaggerated, but not to much so, and has a sort of dismalness to it that drives home that it really is a world on the verge of falling into darkness.

This explains it all. Its not liked anyone should have expected anything different. Gamesworkshop would never let them use a different art style then the one fans had been used to for 25 years.

You can't play an online roleplaying game based on little plastic models and then complain that it looks cartoony.

Realistic graphics is like EPIC FAIL, because to have these graphics, the game result on a empty shell..  and most people play these games (at release) at  30 FPS.
I say, lets accept a borad palette of styles. Lets see what artist can create. Don't have stupid preconceptions against style X, or style Y.
Even Realistic somewhat worked for AoC. :/

Agreed...you cant go too graphic heavy if you're going to be PVP based....Lag has to be minimal and you can't have graphics and rendering slow down the gameplay.....

Looking at both of their concept arts and CGI videos I think Warcraft and Warhammer look nothing alike and I think Blizzard have taken more from asia than Warhammer in terms of looks.

Hmm strange when i see gameplay movie's WAR first thing i think is it a WoW gameplay movie am i at wrong game movies, but no its realy WAR.

They look the same to me, but im not realy a fan of both.

That dont mean you should not play it if you like it go for it have fun.

Some like cartoony, some dont, simple as that.

    could be:

    a) compression in self made vids

    b) older beta or alpha footage (every vid before preview weekend is based on older graphics which look much more like WoW)

    c) size / resolution of vid. -> seriously, and I am not kidding here, the landcape has some cartoony feel to it still, but the character models look as detailed as AoC. I have played both and at 1920x1200, which is easily doable in WAR, you see such an amazing amount of detail on armor and weapons.

chars feel much more diverse and detailed than in AoC. but NOT the environment. I will look for some high rez vid and post the link here, so you can see how it really looks with little compression.

Do they look different?  Sure.  I'm not about to say they're identical, that would be fallacy.

Derivative art isn't just about making 2 things look different.  I could post a pic of, say, an axe from a game like EQ compared to WoW and WAR, and you could clearly note that it is non-derivative.

The stylings go beyond the minutea into the overall design.  Look at the exaggerated armor on both, then compare to a game that looks at a more "realistic" approach to the design.  You won't see shoulder armor that dwarfs the head of the user.

The axes too, both are axes what would weigh about a bazillion pounds in real life and be completely unuseable... compared to the more realistic proportions within a different MMO, such as AC, EQ, UO, etc.

Do they look similar?  Yes, in the scope that they are both massively exaggerated and move more into art than realism in their basic design.  I had already mentioned that WoW's graphics evolved into the more fantastical, yet still maintained the fit and form of the Warhammer "look".  The fact remains that WoW is derivative.  No, it's not a bad thing that it is, most fantasy is derivative in some form, but you gotta look beyond the obvious differences in color or design to see the point I was making, that the overall *style* is derivative.  (and was much closer to the Warhammer design in older games as well)

    "Owned"?  Hardly.

well, this guy is in full plate. I have actually seen a full platemail in reality and it is not so much different except the spikes.

it looks like a super strong (and these mutated bastards are super strong) badass could wear that.

WoW armor looks like the char is not wearing anything, like it is of no material or part of his body with no metal properties.

look at my above posted pic of the high elf.

despite no high rez textures in game at the time of this screenshot, it looks realistical

tell me this elf  and his armor look anything like WoW

  • drtubadrtuba Member Posts: 8

The 12 pound sword or the winged helm?  Again, they're not identical, WoW's style is *derivative*.  All I'm saying is Warhammer created an art style, Blizzard took the ball and ran with it.

  • AskatanAskatan Member Posts: 313

    from wikipedia:

Longswords have lengthy cruciform hilts with grips over some 15 cm (6 in) in length (providing room for two hands), straight double-edged blades often over 90 cm (35 in) in length, and weigh typically between 1.2 and 1.4 kg (2½ to 3 lb), with light specimens just below 1 kg (2 lb), and heavy specimens just above 2 kg (4½ lb).[1]

even 2 hand swords are much lighter than people would assume. e.g. a katana weight about the same as a longsword.

yes. derivative. true. but the difference between that high elf or that chosen and the WoW toon of undefinable gender and armor material is a farcry from what you see on your screen in WAR.

so far that I suggest we put the WoW looks like WAR or vice versa to rest. both are computer games and that's it.
