GW PvP, Feeling like a noob, how to break into it?

LonewolfLonewolf Member UncommonPosts: 252

Been playing Guild Wars again alot and I always had a few problems seeing as the game is quite mature now

I love PvP and always wanted to get into the Guild Wars PvP, however I have usually resigned myself to playing the PvE aspect of the game and then missed out on the PvP

This is mainly because I feel a little intimidated at the sheer number of classes and skills that can be used in the game, and I don't really want to end up making a fool of myself in a PvP battle

Any pointers for a new person on how to break into the PvP game or it best to get through the PvE aspect as well?

Oh and one other question is it worth getting The Eye of the North expansion if you have never really got a character to lvl 20 of the PvE aspect of GW?

Thanks in advance

Well, you don't have to worry about a thing...

First off, I'd to Random Arenas to get a feel for PvP, or join a guild that pvp's- Guilds are very helpful and not just for pvp.

don't get the feeling that your a noob or that you might get laughed at, because i'm sure you will more than likely find some things in RA to laugh about, like the monk with Vamparic Spirit, a warrior with Dragon's Stomp, or even the Healer sin...

If you would like some PvP builds, i suggest using this site: www.pvxwiki.com

Now for EotN! if you have the extra $30 to spare i'd get it, but taking only a day to beat its nothing to get a.s.a.p..  The good things, are it's dungeons (for HM!), and some useful skills, but other than that, nothing much....with the excpetion of 4 more possible titles to Max through rep  - Asura, Dwarven, Vanguard, and Eye of the North - (like explorer)

Add me if you need anything (and i'm on) but be sure to tell me who you are

Actually I would disregard this now, especially for new players

Your better bet is to finda guild that is PvP active and to just ask questions, ifthey have good PvP'ers who know the game, they will be ableto work you into teams, and if they can't, find another guild

PvXWiki has become a hive of misinformation and villainy within the community and for a new player, it can be a daunting task rifling through the crap to find the good builds hidden there

I agree with Lonesamurai1, especially for PvP, pvxwiki should be seen as a last resort, or maybe a source of inspiration to mix your own cocktail. Avoid copy/paste, you'll learn nothing.

It's also a double-edged sword. pvxwiki builds are often overused so, it's a free ticket for your opponent to know what to expect and put together a perfect counter.

PvP gets stale because too many players run the same builds over and over again...

Then ArenaNet will ultimately have a few jabs at those skill setups.

Besides that the choice is yours. I'd recommend you finish a campaign with one character, especially if you only have prophecies since you get quite a bunch of skills virtually for free there. Getting elite skills can be less time consuming too.

Try different primary/secondary combos too, to find out what suits your taste and play style.

Remember that the fundamental unit is the group, not the individual. Train with guild/alliance members in your guild hall for PvP.

As for getting Eye of the North with a char under 20, sure you can, I don't know if it still applies but a while ago they had a system going that boosted lvl 10 and up characters to lvl 20 levels so they could try it out. The first quest if pretty easy and grants you 2 lvl 20 heroes (an elementalist and a monk) and access to maxed out gear in the first outpost.

Making a fool of yourself in RA will prove tricky considering that out ten persons nine and a half of them will be running builds that are either as stupid or worse than the build you're running. While not a great way to determine if your build is really good it's a way to start learning what works and what doesn't, and a beginning to grasp all skills and professions in the game. Simply make your own builds, try them, see how they worked - what could be improved, what to they lack and is there some way to implement what it lacked? Rinse and repeat. Getting a guild to start doing TA, HA and GvG may also be a good idea to furthermore increase your experience of Guild Wars and build creation.

I would suggest doing TA's until you earn a decent gladiator title (and get bored to death with TA's). Then you need to start to look for a PvP guild. Other than that, getting into a decent PvP guild is pure luck.

for casual PVP i always enjoy Alliance Battles, but it seems to be popular only during AB weekends

I like the Factions pvp map, Fort Aspenwood

    wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Fort_aspenwood

its the only PVP i enjoy in GW because it has PVE gameplay too

I kill many more npcs than players in that map

or I will be busy bee running amber from the mines or trying to stop Siege Turtles if playing Kurzick

The problem as I see it with starting in TA is that you'll need to get three other people, which may prove troublesome, and the most of the random people you'll pick up will be playing builds like W/Mo with Healing Hands and equal... less effective warrior builds. And no matter how much Healing Hands and Rebirth your powerful wammo got you won't be able to beat a decent balanced or hexwway. You won't learn much of the game from being rolled every single time, which is why RA is superior; there you can play bad builds and still win, as well as learn something from it. And I agree on getting into a decent PvP guild: luck is what you'll need here.

Alliance Battles may also be a good idea to play with your builds, although it will be no means represent how any other arena in PvP works. AB is in many ways closer to PvE than it is to the other arenas in PvP: the way to victory is by capping and that means only killing NPCs at the shrines; your major enemy will be, as stated, NPCs; pretty much everything works when it comes to killing NPCs; and last, but not least, using builds that spike down one single person will be good in every other arena except AB where using AoE spells is better.

Finding 3 people to play with in TA's isn't that hard. The point here is only PvP experience and gladiator points. No serious PvP guild is going to let you join up without any experience at all and TA's is the easiest to come by. You can log in for an hour and do it. You can log in for 4 hours and do it. You can log any day at any time and do it.

The problem with RA's is that the only thing you will really learn is how to play like an idiot.  They in no way reflect any other part of PvP. And if finding 3 people who aren't dumbasses is too hard for him then he's got bigger problems than how to break into PvP.

That said, the OP asked for advice. I've been in two full time, PvP guilds. Most of the people who were brought in had PvP experience somewhere else. Get it in HA if you can.  Hell create your own PvP guild if you can. But knowing nothing about the OP and his skills I would still suggest TA over anything else simply because of accesability without the stupidity of RA's (well without most of it).

If  you or the OP think that RA's are good for anything other than testing builds, that's fine. But that's not my opinion and I'm sure as hell not going to advise that anybody ever learn how to PvP by going to RA's.

You remind me of me when I was still new to the game.

My best advice is to get yourself in a good pvp guild, and an active one at that. These people will be your mentors and soon enough you will find yourself in the ranks of a bonafide gw pvp'er.

With regards to being laughed at, and the fear of it. This will stop you from getting anywhere. I can't imagine how many times I got called the derogatory noob through endless cycles of matches. I believe everyone has to go through this stage. After all, no one was born with innate pvp traits.

    Well, maybe Zohan but...

Not to be rude or anything but I think that he knew that already. The problem I think he's having is finding one. Networking, you know.
