Do MMORPGs need manditory name generators?

There has been many a game I've played where players have used offensive rude or misleading names, sometimes to harass or insult others (usually rasist or in poor taste: religious/political) or to grief or otherwise exploit the unwary.

This usually requires intervention by GMs or Devs (time wasted imo) to address and correct, and
this also detracts from a sense of immersion ingame.

I for one would be willing to surrender the "naming" of a char or toon for a generated name in char as long as I had several to choose from, I know most people like myself may know others from other games who have a set name ingame (or a wordplay on a name) but it would seem an easy solution.

I disagree.  I have used the name Tombs or Tombz (if the first was gone) in many games.  Not only does it represent my character and is an internet handle but has a link to RL.  My actual name is Tom and Tom ---> BS is when I am wasting time [BSing] posting on the internet or playing a mmorpg when I should be spending my time more constructively.

However, I will try to play a character where the name Tombs fits...in stress test was a Night Elf Rogue and had an Orc Warlock named Tombz.  For MEO this name doesn't make it so I had to choose a Tolkienish name and decided on Falmar (Quenya elven translation is "breaking wave").  I also had a dwarf warrior in the Beta test named Durgin.

I decide the features of my character, I decide his history and class, I determine what his goals and ideals are and I damn sure want control of the name.

Will it bother you or detract from your enjoyment of the game to see another player ingame who for whatever reasons is not as intelligent in the naming of his Char called "0sam4 bin l4den", "buttfux",Wigga" or any number of otherwise annoying non Rp names?

I disagree with the topic, but I agree with the above posters points and as well you should understand that mmorpg's are about createing/living your own story in a sense or they are trying to make it feel as though you are the conductor of your avatars legend.  Applying a generated name or preset name removes the self image of your character and detracts more from immersion imo than does running into some idiot ingame.

Yes, that does bother me, but the solution isn't forcing everyone to use some randomly generated name. That would ruin the immersion factor for me worse than seeing the other silly names running around.

The solution is simply that there needs to be better filters and guards against such in place, and better actions taken by the CSRs/GMs towards catching people doing it. Doesn't seem like a programming feat to me to give the ingame CSRs/GMs a command so they can list every player on the server. Then they check the list of names, pop over to the innappropriate ones, and change them on the spot and put a warning on the account.

Yes those names will both bother and detract from my game enjoyment.  However, MANDATORY means that even the conscientous intelligent roleplayers are forced to accept a computer generated name.  Penalizing those type players, myself included, just to avoid the xxXBUTTSEKSXxx is nothing more than throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

You can easily read my opinion on a naming policy in this post:

The worse thing I hate seeing is a character named Sephiroth01 or any of his relatives within that general name pool. Leet talking is kinda annoying too (despite me having a name like En1Gma...lol).

I also think a manditory name generator will be very bad as well because people aren't going to want a forced name for their character..even if you do have an infinite number of times to click the name generator again.  It's too restrictive.

I disagree.  I believe that offensive and inappropriate names should not be allowed, but a generator may be too restrictive.

I know many players would be upset if they couldn't use the online name they have been known for over the years, and other players who like to create their own unique names for different mmorpgs would be too restricted.

Check out the post "Wow Pwnz iDi0t names" for some good feedback relating to this thread.

I disagree to I have been using certain (sur-)names for years now and have often been recognized in other games thus. That would be something Id not want to go with out. this simply thing has renewed friendships and saved me often much time infinding people i am tuned with.

    I disagree.

    How about this:

    - Any player who denounce another player using a name that goes against the naming policy gets IN GAME prizes (cash/items).

    - If a user is caught using a name that goes against the naming policy the account is suspended. If it happens 3 times he gets banned.

The simplicity of this suggests that just maybe the MMORPG companies do not care about naming policy as much as some of us do.
