It seems to me, that a lot of people is looking for mmorpgs with great PvP. Me myself, I play solely because of PvP. So, ive tried ALOT of games, but they all get boring realy quick. Either its the lvling threadmill or unbalanced classes, or just that the PvP gets pointless fast. One game keeps sucking me back in tho...Shadowbane. Before i ramble on, i wanna make it clear, that I AM trying to get more people to try out Shadowbane(14 day free trial). It is the best PvP game on the market hands down, but it is not for carebears. If getting PKed makes u wanna quit, SB is not for you. If getting PKed makes u wanna get even and burn the PKers town down, then SB IS for you. SB had a bad release. The game werent ready yet. But MANY of the problems that SB had at release, has been solved. It still has its bugs and issues, but all in all, it has improved greatly.
What does SB offer -
- All out PvP. Only on newb islands is there no PvP, and in the 2 freeholds on the mainlands.
- City building. Completely player run - u decide how ur town shall look.
- Fast lvling compared to all other mmorpgs.
- so many class variations
- great class balance
- PvP is based as much on skill and knowledge of ur character and the short commigs of ur opponents.
- The satisfying feeling when u stand in the smoldering ruins of you enemies town.
- Upcomming expansion that adds new race(vampire) new classes, new control over area system(not sure how this will turn out, but from what ive heard its gonna rock)
- an open test server with SUPER fast lvling(max lvl in 1 day or 2)and uber gold drop. Great to test out new character builds, testing new city building tactics and so on.
-Grouping system is GREAT. More or less if a group has a spot available, u can get it, no matter what class you are.
-Lvls arent all important. A well build and well played lvl 50 wizzard could kill a poorly build, badly played lvl 75 wizzard. Skill matters.
- Graphics are ok, but no more then that.
- Lag at big sieges and occasional crashes(but seems the dev team is working hard to fix these issues)
- Not for carebears. You will get PKed, your town will be burned.
- Control system - mouse+right click to move. Some people hate it and would rather have wasd movement, but myself I love it. Before u give up, just play for 1 hour or 2, and ull start feeling right at home.
- Sb need more people. right now the euro server(damnation) peak at 400-500, Vengeance server peaks at 800-1000, and the roleplay server Mourning peaks at 600-800.
Advice -
Dont just make a character. Go read some templates on http://chronicle.ubi.com/ so u make sure u make a good character. Not that its that big of a deal cause u lvl so fast in SB, but its always good not to have a gimp character. When u get lvl 20+, try and get into a guild. Dont get guilded to the first that comes along. Look on world map for the bigger guilds, where there are many people on cause that makes it easier to get xp groups and PvP groups. But remember, the bigger a nation is, the more enemies it probably has.
I hope some of you will give it a try. Some will like it, some wont. One thing is for sure. If you want a PvP mmorpg, Shadowbane is it.

I would give Shadowbane a serious try if it weren't for the highly irritating point-click-and-run interface. I need to play with a WASD control system.
If I could find a game that has a pvp world even close to as fun as AC Darktide about 2-3 years ago I would be all over it. I hate games that say they have pvp but its just consentual duelling garbage or a level based rather than skill based.
Seems like Shadowbane has most of whats good in a pvp game, if they would implement a control system like RYL has, so that you can toggle between point-and-click and WASD, it may just be a winner.
SB was fun for the first 2 months on scorn, now its a steaming pile of
Can you elaborate a little on why the point and click interface works better?
My experience is that I like being able to control the character with one hand...running, jumping, turning etc. while using the mouse to use the interface, i.e. opening packs, picking weapons or spells, etc. It seems to me that just using the mouse would limit things.
If Shadowbane does work better this way I may have to give it a try
The manuverability(sp)with the point and click system is second to none. At first I too was one of those people that didnt like it..but now I think its the best way to play. As he said - try out PvP and get used to the system. When first u can control the camera, youl begin to love it like the rest of us:D
Dont judge Sb by the PvE either. PvE isnt great(sucks), its the PvP thats fun.
Btw: RYL is the sux. Looked good, but daaaamn its boring lol.
Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit
Point and click is better than wasd imo. I guess if you play alot of fps's than your so used to wasd its hard to get used to something else, but point and click for SB makes it so you dont have to really use your keyboard, altho i'd reccomend it for macros. What makes it better is that you can set a destination point, either by clicking on the top map or clicking the area you want to go to from your view. Your character will run to that point. While your character is running you can rotate your camera angle as well as click on other players or things you'd like to target.
So your basically running to the area you want to get to on auto with your first click as well as being able to look around you or click whatever you want to on the way. Whereas with wasd you have to keep your finger on one of the keys, and likely keep a mouse button down and rotate the direction you want to go. I didnt like SB's movement at first, but its kinda spoiled me to lazy'ness when i'm not pvp'ing since all i need to use is the mouse to do anything.
There are things you should set like macros, many dont but its a disadvantage just like iin UO if you dont, which is why i say its better to use a keyboard along with the mouse. You could if you wanted just use the mouse and click the powers you want to use with the mouse, but it takes too long and you will be at a disadvantage imo against people who do set macro keys. When i'm feeling REALLY lazy i'll just use mouse and click the power buttons with the mouse, sometimes i really hate having both my hands tied up
SB isnt noobie friendly, i said this in another post on SB. If you dont know anything about the game and just start playing your going to have a hell of a time trying to lvl up and compete. The norm in SB is getting powerlvl'd, most guilds will do that for you while you park yourself in a safe spot near the powerlvler. You can get powerlvl'd up to a point but when you reach around R5'sh you'll likely have to start contributing to the exp.
Problem is most guilds that are easy to get into usually arent worth joining. The good guilds are really picky and theres alot of paranoia of alt spies. So you more than likely either have to be very dedicated to SB where you can prove your loyalty probably by powerlvling the guilds toons, or have to know someone already in a good guild that will get you in. SB can be a great experience or it can be the worst experience you've ever had in a game. It really is ALL about situation, winning is fun and losing can really suck and break guilds apart due to all the grief and low morale involved. So if you join a bad guild or a starter guild you might end up pharming your butt off to build a city for your guild annd to help pay upkeep, etc., which is probably one of the worst situations to be in. Or you can join a big guild/nation where its already established, which i would reccomend for many reasons. You very likely wont get into the smaller more leet guilds unless you know someone.
I think the Dev's and their decisions are a big reason why SB has lost alot of players and why it doesnt get too many new ones. They really cater to the veterans or the top 5% at the expense of everyone else. Its a shame really, but you reap what you sow.
thats why I dont really feel like playing SB... I just prefer wasd
also rohbshop... alot of wasd game I've played have had an auto run and a few even have a /follow command for the long runs... just letting you know
