I'm orignally from AC... and thats among my favorite games ever... is this anything like that?

also is there any PvP in this game?
and how is it?

does it require you to find groups for everything?

is it worth $30?

edit: also I'm a pretty big FF fan... its why I'm so interrested in this one

If you like games that suck you'll like it alot.

    No PvP

    Yes have to group

    Not worth 5 cents

    Nothing like previous FF titles

    Never played AC1

Yes i've seen pvp videos, not sure how it is haven't tested

Yes FFXI is a grouping game, but why the hell would you play a mmorpg to solo anyway... go play a good single player game instead.

worth every penny if you like mmorpgs and final fantasy

if your a FF fan I highly reccomend FFXI, the game has instanced content, fun combat, great class/skill system (you can change jobs at any time while keeping the levels in your old job), a nice community, Many final fantasy related monsters and content (what other mmorpg has airships??). Don't base your whole outlook on the game from one guys post.

I suggest checking out the VN boards repost this there youll get a better response http://vnboards.ign.com/FFXI_General_Board/b22412/

The VN boards are pretty good.  Heres the VN boards player review of FFXI.

    http://vnboards.ign.com/MMORPG_Player_Reviews/b22600/59743524/?69

46% gave the game 5/10 or less.  Not good.

BTW theres no PvP, only something called Ballista which is not the same.

it's a lot like everquest, which a lot of people fail to mention. so it really depends on what your feelings are towards everquest.

as for me, i've accepted it's inherent flaws and actually enjoy it (at the same time, i'm in the minority as most people who like the game are playing it and everyone who doesn't is here to bitch about it).

I loved EQ, played it for 3 years, best MMORPG ever made.  FFXI was just total poop, couldnt even stand to play the whole free 30 days.

when you can easily solo in a MMO its nice not having to be restricted to having to find/dealwith a group

you can usually group fine in games where you can solo, and you have much more freedom also... you can play it however you want to

Everquest and FFXI have the same focus, level level level then endgame go on raids and stuff.

Many game features were similar as well. I couldn't handle FFXI anymore because of the strict forced grouping though.

And while i managed 7 months with FFXI, forget EQ's 30 day trial i couldn't last more than 3 hours. Everquest was the worst thing to ever happen to mmorpgs. It made popular a carrot-on-the-stick mentality, where players would pointlessly grind and grind to become stronger and attain virtual status. Yes, it was and still is one of the most popular mmo's around, but thats just because its addictive. Just like cigarettes, despite being popular, its still a shitty product.

That said, FFXI is > EQ. FFXI at least attempts to draw you into a storyline. Its still plagued by the same problems as EQ though, and both these games arn't worth your time.

If you like PvP, go DnL or Darkfall. If you're a turbine fan, check out D&D Online, though it won't have PvP its still better than Middle Earth Online. As for FF'ish, Square's new mmorpg Fantasy Earth looks like it'll have PvP, though not much info is out on it yet.

3 hours?  No wonder you think it sucks.  Sorry but it wouldnt be addictive if it sucked.  If it sucked people wouldnt like it or play it.  After 3 hours you wouldnt know any of this.  At least I gave FFXI a chance.

Good graphics and decent fighting/skill system. I think you should be looking ahead to EQ2 or WoW. That's where it's all going. Personally I'm all about WoW.

It can be addictive/popular and suck. Thats why i used the cigarette analogy. EQ, just like cigarettes gives you a miniscule amount of pleasure and makes you more and more addicted to it. What is this fix? Gaining levels and loot.

And just how much of FFXI's 30 day trial did you play? Either way, 30 days isn't enough to determine how good a game is, both in EQ's case and FFXI's. But from testimony and other posts, it appears they are fundamentally pretty much the same.

More precisely, what don't you like about FFXI? I don't like either of them now... but what i don't understand is how you can love 1 and absolutely hate the other.

  • ramadinramadin Member Posts: 1,304

You dont make any sense at all.  A game CANNOT be addictive if its NOT fun.  If youre gettign a "miniscule" amount of enjoyment, the desire to play isnt strong, if your getting ALOT of enjoyment then it IS addictive.  People dont do herion for the first time and say "meh, its alright, nothing great" and then go back for more and more.

Secondly, if 30 days wasnt enough to know if youre gonna like a game, the company would give you MORE than 30 days.  Seeing as how they think its plenty of time to "hook" you, then yes it IS enough time.  I played roughly 3 weeks of it, probably 80 hours or so.

    Things that suck:

Char creation: too few races, only 8 faces on each.  Everyone looks the same.

Mob types: waaaay too few of the same mobs.  IE Lvl 1 worms - lvl 35 worms.  Gets old

Controls:  The UI just plain sucks, way to cumbersome to have to scroll through menu after menu

Weapon and armor assortment: Everyone has the same gear, if its not the same, it still looks the same.

Travel:  Walking to another city or area can take 30 minutes, wtf is that???  SUre you get chocobos at lvl 20, but that dont help lvl1-20.  Not to mention you cant own mounts.

I could go on and on but Ive said it all before.

not really picking sides in this, but i will disagree on the fact that a game has to be "fun" in order to be addictive. i think where mmorpgs can achieve this is within the community; once you've become sick of the game, you'll generally tend to stick around because you don't want to leave the people you've met.

i began to hate DAoC as a game, but for some silly reason i found myself there every night trying to level up in order to play alongside my friends. that can happen on many different degrees, even to the point of being slightly depressing for most people.

hell, i still miss my old friends in DAoC but i'm happy that i've broken free of it at the same time.

Hanging with your friends is not addictive.  Lonely, maybe, addictive, no.

yes, but my point is that sooner or later most people will hop right back on the level treadmill to keep up with those said friends and more or less lose track of why they started in the first place. addiction is synonymous with co-dependence (which the majority of mmorpg players suffer). it doesn't always connotate "fun".

  • ramadinramadin Member Posts: 1,304

"and more or less lose track of why they started in the first place"

Thats my point, the reason they started in the first place was because it was fun.  People generally dont ONLY play a game because a friend does, it has to have some appeal.  If you have co-dependance issues, thats more personality related than game related.
