I didn't like the art style or the character style.
I installed the game, played for a few minutes and then uninstalled it. While the guts of the game does sound amazing if I cannot get 'into' my character I just can't play it. Same problem I have with eve online.
A few minutes? Are you kidding?
I wonder sometimes how widespread A.D.D. really is..
Yes a few minutes. It doesn't take me an hour and a half for the messages to travel from my eyeballs to the brain. As said, the gameplay looks sound, however I just can't play a game that is visually unappealing to me.
Edit: I had graphical settings set to max, so please don't question that. It wasn't the art quality per say, it was more the art style.
i'm with the op on SoR. i've been playing mmos since the late 90s as well, tons and tons since i started. SoR still remains one of my highest rated mmos to date.
I'm glad to see that so many are having their eyes opened to Ryzom. It really does slap you in the face like a wet fish screaming "You idiot! I've been here all along."
I heard about Ryzom about a month before it shut down. I had fun playing, found a nice guild to join, and had tried to subscribe but....
Some people commented about poor graphics. I thought they were decent enough, nothing special, but fine.
The crafting system is truly amazing, the best I've seen in any mmo. I also loved how many of the animal herds would migrate, so the same types of mobs could not always be found in the same basic place, something unique for any MMO I've tried.
The game does have a heavy learning curve about some things, and travel can take a while. But all in all I thought it was a very nice game, and refreshingly original in many ways.
I've tried it a couple of times but just couldn't get into it. The Art Style, the flow of the game, nothing about it really grabbed me and said "Hey I am the game for you!" but hey for anyone that loves it good for them.
Currently playing: LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too: Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)
after reading so much about the game lately and while better ones (as it seems) its going to take some time to pop out, i think ill go back to SOR to see if it changed. Been there years ago and got attracted by other games, since i remember, or i quitted because it went "payable" or just died? cant remember, it could be awesome if my old account still exists after "the fall".
If you are going to get that technical, nothing can feel like a "world". I mean, when you play most games, no other zones are loaded. Only the zone you are in is loaded. One can argue that can't feel like a world either.

I have to agree with altairzq here, a game without jumping immediately ruins any game immersion and experience for me. I actually tried Ryzom, but quit after realizing you can't jump.
Subscribtions: EVE, SWTOR WOW, WAR, DDO, VG, AOC, COV, FFXI, GW, RFO, Aion +plenty of F2P, betas, trials
Female Dwarf player: WOW, VG, WAR, DDO . Due to the recent economic crisis and spending cuts the light at the end of the tunnel was turned off. Sincerely, God.
Only one word can describe Saga of Ryzom...... EPIC!
I've wasted a lot of time trying new mmo's after the death of Swg and finally I found a game that I'm happy with.
This game may not be for everyone (most sandbox games are a niche) but this game is really good.
Currently I've chosen to play my character as a heavy armored, two handed sword Dps machine.
Depending on the team I'm in I can switch to a healer with buffs/auras or a caster with nukes, dots and defensive magic or maybe a tank, hell I could go scout with medium armor and daggers with poison or play a commando type avatar with a rifle and increased run speed...... I could go on and on.
I could customize my own spells, I can take my Ice nuke spell and add a dot effect and slowing effect to it, I can increase it's range or decrease its range and increase its power its amazing.
I can create my own scenarios using Ryzom ring and make one man puzzles, large group encounters or quest area's for my friends and guild.
I can have an apartment, hang out in a social club or buy a mount that I would need to stable and feed.
I can pvp in world pvp zones or the many arena's around the world or participate in guild vs guild battles over outposts that could be captured, defended and retaken.
My guild could get together and take on a rather large world boss and much much more.
Guys I can go on forever this game is good and I am enjoying it.
there is no need for jumping in ryzom that i can ever remember, i think it keeps a cooler more calmer and collective playerbase with out the jumping around bits like a frog with hemeroids.
Why the hell didn't anyone mention this game earlier this summer? Here i've been bored with no game to play and this game sounds interesting and distinct. Too bad its just before WAR and i already have an addiction to that game. I can't handle having 2 at once...
The lack of jumping is no big deal to me. Dont get me wrong, I loved the ability to 'superjump' in CoH, and have always enjoyed the ability to jump in every game I have ever played. But in the final analysis, jumping never has added much to the actual gameplay. Its a nice ability, which is fun to have, but not central to the gameplay. There is so much doggone 'goodness' to the gameplay in Ryzom, that the inability to jump is a very, very minor blip on the screen--at least for me. I find the world incredibly immersive (and dangerous) with or without jump.
I thourghly endorse Ryzome as a great sandbox game with an awesome skill system and crafting.
As for the defination of a sandbox is alternate advancement methods. This doesn't mean you offer 5 ways to level up combat level this means you offer the ability to follow a handfull of different paths(crafting, combat, magic, social, and NPC social(factions) are just very simple examples). Even if most players draw multiable paths you should have the ability for players to completely focus their energy into one or two and not have pre-nerfed game play. Also take special note that it doesn't involve PvP at all in a lot of cases it's just something that's expected to be there and by most real sandboxers that it be focused on some form of territory control(figurative or literal) instead of 'fun for teh ganks' type stuff(a lot of people pretend to be sandboxers or are deluded that they are because they like for teh g4nks gameplay).
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
I have to agree with the artstyle it didnt appeal to me either, but the animations on your characters where amazing, and some of the graphics on spells just didnt look right to me they are beautiful in there own way but not appealing to my eyes personally, except a few kinds of spells.
The world is beautiful but not for a mmorpg in my opinion maybe for a movie, im glad it appeals to others though, its to bad I couldnt get into the world though otherwise it probably would have been a perfect game for me, but im enjoying lotro right now and I prefer that world at the moment, im waiting for a really good sci fi/fantasy world to come out maybe even stargate worlds, I figured out lately its not the features I look for most in the game its how alive the world feels to me and how invovled I feel inside the world basicly the setting and environment.
I have been playing Ryzom for the past couple days, it is pretty fun, they have a lot of little cleaver systems in place that provide an alternative to linear leveling, ie the stanza system, so players have more control over how their character developes.
Many people keep saying that it has a big learning curve but I haven't found it to be so, most actions in the game are intuitive, or can be figured out really quickly, besides it has a system of missions designed to be a tutorial to help you learn.
My biggest grips so far is lack of jumping, I have come across situations where it would have been useful. Also I wish you got defensive magic XP for healing and resurecting random people.
Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit
Also I wish you got defensive magic XP for healing and resurecting random people.
Yea, it appears that defensive magic xp only comes from casting heals on damaged team members during the course of combat. A single heal is enough to get full experience for a given combat encounter. But if the person is not damaged during the fight, then casting heals on that person will yeild no xp. I dont think you get xp for casting heals on dead team members in order to rez them, but I may be mistaken. Im still fairly new to the game.
Nevertheless, its fairly easy to level up your defensive magic in a group, and the lack of xp seems to be no deterrent to frequent 'drive by' heals and rezzes from non-party members. Mainland Atys is a pretty tough place, and random encounters between players out in the wilderness tend to be highly cooperative. I often find myself fighting (and losing against) some tough mob, only to be rescued in the nick of time by some drive by healer. Makes for good feelings all around.

Who would have known that the same guy arguing naively on the Warhammer forums supports such a garbage game, Ryzom. Your credibility is shot man.
Ryzom's the best sandbox game I've ever played other than Pre-Cu, in a way. Communitties just wonderful and I LOVE the crafting!
You have convinced me to give this game a go, downloading at this very moment.
