Just picked up AoC to see what all the fuss was about first hand.  Hopeuflly I will enjoy it.

Quick question while I install the client though:

What is the difference between the pve and pvp servers? Will I get horribly horribly massacred in the pvp servers and be forced to stroll on my knees through swamps looking for rats to kill to level up because all the main mob areas are full of bloodthirsty 8 year olds? Does it enhance the experience or detract from it?  And what is this culture pvp about?

I would post on the forums and find out what servers have the highest populations.    AOC is in a great decline right now, and some of the pve servers are completely empty.  A lot of the game is abotu group activities and a lot of players on the lesser servers are begging for server merges so they can actually accomplish things.

I'm not what to tell you about getting ganked.. it's a part of the game, like any other pvp game.

run, run as far away and fast as you can is my advice.

It depends on the particular PvP server: If it is heavily populated, then you might be subject to griefing, although there are few PvP servers that are and even if you do get griefed AoC has a feature to change instance. There are usually instanced solo areas for each level bracket that you can grind in if you fear PvP, or simply don't want to have to deal with it.

Normal PvP is FFA: No constraints on who can be attacked in PvP zones. Culture PvP is by race (I believe, since I've only ever played on FFA).

I would just like to add this.

Be very careful about your credit card information on the site.   There have been numerous reports of players being charged after they had quit the game.

When you quit the game, make sure you delete your credit card information BEFORE you actually quit.

Welcome to AoC. I hope you do like it. Unfortunately, many people do not because of different things Funcom has don.

Biggest difference between the PvP and PvE servers is you cannot fight other players on PvE. There is always a chance someone may grief you in PvP because their PvP ruleset kinda hardly exists and its free for all for any lvl without any major penalties to the griefer.

However, that was back when the servers were packed. Now, if you want a good storng server (PvE or PvP) you'll want to go on the official forums and ask around which servers are good right now because a lot of them are suffering from a lack of players.

Sinc eyou mention bloodthirsty 8 years olds, the community may get to you. Try to ignore the community chat windows as well.

It's worth a try, although the joy of the early 'discovery' days for the community is gone, and the game is still in beta.

If chossing between PvE and PvP, seriously  - go PVP. Its much more fun. PVE gets old fast in this game without some PVP spice.

The majority of players or on PVP servers, i would sugest PVP-RP as it tends to have less gankers. Atleast there they will tell you they dont like the cut of your jib before attacking =)

Culture PVP is akin fo factional PvP, just with each race being a faction. All other PvP servers are everyone can openly attack anyone.

pve servers have no one playing in then and pvp servers have about 10 people playing in them

The early game is quite fun and you will likely get your moneys worth. Really there is not much of a MMORPG once you get past that early stuff.

If you just picked up AoC I would advise you to go and pick up WAR and play that first.

WAR is where it is at and launches only happen once wit htheir unique atmosphere opportunities and genral mayhem.

Forgoing WAR for AoC now is akin to turning up at a bad party when everyone except the local drunk is left sitting in the corner in a pool of his own piss.

Turnm up for the real party at WAR see how that tickles your fancy and check out AoC once the WAR launch is done and settles down into something like a regular pattern, or you have the time.

At least if you have bought AoC get a buddy key from someone.

please do not take this the wrong way. But if you have 50 dollars and you want to buy a MMO, a better idea is to wait until AoC free trial is free and check it out. Don't spend 50 dollars on a game and then regret doing it. I recommend this to ANY MMO, not just AoC.

With that said, I would also recommend you to go to Target, spend 99 cents on the WAR preorder. WAR is also a new MMO that is coming out in 3 weeks.

If you spend 99 cents on the game, you will have access to open beta next week and you can essentially play it for 2 weeks to get the feel for the game. 2 weeks is essentially a trial run on a MMO and Warhammer is pretty solid so it will be like jumping into a trial of an MMO thats been out for awhile.

Give it some thought before you put down 50 dollars on any MMO game.

Don't worry, there's no one left on the servers to gank you. If you've played single players RPGs, this whole AoC experience shouldn't be too much to grasp for you.

Not the best advice this one...WAR is still in beta and even when its realised i would give it 3-4 months to get started as like any new game it will be full of launch bugs. If you have AoC then try that out as its fairly settled now although the servers are depopulated.

PvP on AoC is not that great atm its bascially a lot of idiots running around ganking because they can. The pvp test servers testing the new pvp update (pvp levels) are just servers full of spawn gankers/campers which is not fun and not pvp if you enjoy a good battle its not to be had here for this reason i would advice to check out WAR as that is order vs choas and it wont be all against all which gets dull when your trying to pve.

I think PvE contense and RP in WAR will be pretty much non existant so even to this day WoW does offer the best all round experience, lets hope that DF has something better to offer.

Your whole post proves you know nothing about WAR, so it's better that you never even mentioned it to begin with. WAR has less bugs in beta than it does AoC today. WAR has working PVP. WAR probably have more PVE content than AoC too lol, now that's sad.

there aren't many bugs at all in the game

I dont think you will find many people that have played mmog for years that will tel lyou joining a game at launch is not a  unique experience and generally something they enjoy and cherish being part of.

Id play virually any large scale serious MMOG on release over one that wants $50 upfront for a game in serious freefall with ridiculously underpopulated servers and people deserting in droves.

Id suggest recommending someone go down the shops and spend $50 on AoC when a/you can get in free on a buddy key and b/WAR - is just about to be released, is not offering the guy anything like best advice.

WAR has been in development a long time.  If you read the reviews and the beta feedback and compare it to what was knocking about for AoC youll find it is in a lot more depth.  Most of it is positive and it has some often hard to please people excited.

The vast majority of AoC reviews were based on Tortage - in my view reviewers were totally unprofessional in their appraoch by reviewing the game based on tortage since it is got almost nothing in common with the games positioning.

If that doesnt persuade you check out Funcoms  stock price, subscription numbers, the official AoC forums and the news oh and check your PC specs !

Welcome to the group and in a week or so when you decide to quit. Make sure you quit at least 2 weeks before renewal and delete your credit card info first. Better yet activate the account wipe your info out and cancel, you can always reactivate if on some odd chance you like the mess.

Funcom has a bad tendency to bill a week or more early and charge people for an extra month.

Better yet return AOC if its not open, get a refund and buy Warhammer Online its way better and 10x more stable than this crap.

So you people, as I did, got burned getting AoC when it first came out...and are now recommending he get ANOTHER game now in beta?

Here's a recommendation: get a game with good reviews, that's been out longer than 6 months.  At the least, wait for the game to be out long enough for people to generate opinions in magazines and on forums before getting it.  Go down the top 6 list on this site, and all the games have been out past 6 months.  The bugs are worked out(something that never gets done in beta), and people have tested the games to their limits.

For all you short-term memory folks out there, AoC had a lot of people in beta lauding the combat system and scenery, and saying what a great game it would be.  Sounds like WAR is setting up the same way.  At least it won't take a Cray to run, though.

see WAR has a lot of what it promised WORKING in beta unlike Conan when they said it would be released shortly after release

Frankly this isn't the WAR forum, therefor it has no bearing on the topic at hand. The O.P. didn't ask for anyone's opinion on what game he should be buying. He asked specific questions that no one has even bothered trying to answer.

What's with these posters, trolling is bad m'kay?

    @ O.P.

I wish I could answer your question but I am not playing at the moment, when I was playing Deathwhisper seemed to be a good choice for PVP. It's not as harsh as you may think on a FFA server either. Just avoid gankers by changing instances, or picking another rez spot.
