What is Warhammer?

purewitzpurewitz Member UncommonPosts: 489

I know what the MMORPG is and I have seen the trailers for it. My question comes from a banner I saw recently that said Warhammer was celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, 1983 -2008. I'm 30 years old , so where has Warhammer been for 25 year, if I have never heard of it before this MMORPG. Basically if someone has known of Warhammer for 10, 20, or even 25 years. Please give me a brief history, thank you in advance.

When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there!

Think that should answer all your questions nicely.

In a brief summary: Warhammer is a game based on action figures with strategy. Like playing board game (with out a board even most times). I never got really into it, though thought it was cool when I was shown how it was played 10 years ago. But it is really only recently been getting itself involved into the electronic era of gaming.

    WAAAGH!!

Warhammer is okay I guess, but Warhammer 40.000 is the best thing handed down to us by the glorious God-Emperor of Mankind since sliced bread.

If you've seriously never heard of the franchise, you've either lead an unsheltered life outside in the sun, or you're lieing :P It started out as a fantasy tabletop game borrowing lots from Tolkien and popular fantasy culture, and it's evolved into several other forms of entertainment and games. 40K, for example, being a science fiction merge of Tolkien, Aliens and World War 1 and 2 - and spawning alot of quite readable fluff like the Gaunt's Ghosts novels by Dan Abnett.

Basic answer.  It was a tabletop game made by Gamesworkshop.  Im sure you ahve seen a Games Workshop store in your local mall once or twice throughout your life.  Inside are a ton of really complex board games and miniature figurines you can buy for those games.

It started out with the standard Warhammer game, which is placed in the world that you see in the Warhammer Online trailers.  Later they made Warhammer 40k and many others.

These are all table top games played with advanced rulesets to simulate a stratigic battle between forces.  The game, to add life, developed a thick lore to further immerse players, and to give a story behind the objectives of each battle.

Novels were written based on the lore.

This goes on for about 15 years.

Blizzard comes along and says, "We got a video game in the works that is based off Warhammer.  You like?"  Games workshop rejected it.  Later Blizzard turned that game into Warcraft and changed around the lore.

Fast forward to today and you now have the Warhammer: Dawn of War video game, and Warhammer Online, both specifically following the lore that Games Workshop created.

Let's not forget also the rather brilliantly done Warhammer FRP (Fantasy Role Playing game).  It didn't have the large following the Warhammer wargames did, nor that of DnD as far as roleplaying games go, but it went a long ways to fleshing out Warhammer lore and style.  Once ya got past the rules, it's one of the few roleplaying games I've ever found to be an entertaining read just absorbing the backstory and content.

I've always been more of an electronic gamer, manly PC and Consoles. Up until Star Wars: Kights of the Old Republic, I didn't play to many RPGs. My opinion of RPGs were colored by the original Final Fantasy on the original Nintendo. I don't care much for turn-based combat gameplay. What I did like about KOTOR that stuck out for me was, how you had all the different story arcs in the game. Hated the gameplay, but found pleasure in twisting the story as far as the game would allow. I've have played every light side and dark side arc, plus all the love arcs. I was the first one in my family or group of friends(Who had played the game.) to find the(Spoiler Alert!,lol) female Revan - Juhani lesbian love story. For the most part though I like action based games, especially 3rd person shooters, hack and slash, and action RPGs.  One of my favorite games of the last year has been Mass Effects, has a great story with great story arcs, sweet graphics, and the gamplay is action based. One of the best games I have ever played, but I just played Star Wars: The Force Unleashed the demo the other day and I think may have a new favorite game. So basicly thats where I have been and where I am now. On a side note, here's hoping the KOTOR MMO rumors are true, lol. I know it was somewhat confirmed at E3, but there has been no official annoucement yet. So I'm not going to get my hopes up, like everyone else.

Warhammer is the franchise by Games Workshop.

I never knew much about them either, as i am a *younger audience*

But I knew about the board game etc. and when Dawn of War came out, i bought it and loved the gameplay.

Eventually led to me reading like 7+ books, and playing more of their games.

And Mass Effect is a fun game :D

Mass Effect 2 gonna be sick.
