Because it sure beats overcomplicating an issue.
wasnt AoC a perfect example of how graphics dont mean squat?
No, it wasn't a perfect example if people couldn't enjoy the game behind it due to looking at bad graphics or performance issues. It's kinda like how you can't enjoy a good meal while staring at dog crap.
gameplay > graphics any day! and WAR has fantastic gameplay (& im not a fanboy, & dont care about lore either, speaking from my PW experience i had a great time in t1 & t2).
Your opinion, and that's great for you. However, if they exported the WoW gameplay ideas in to the Ultima 1 graphics client, I think you're smart enough to figure out it wouldn't be as popular with it's current subscriber base.
there has to be a balance between graphics & preformance in open RvR where there is guna be ALOT of ppl on screen at once, & mythic is already doing better than any one else at walking that tight rope IMO.  anyway WAR graphics looked fine to me, if you want bling go play AoC & enjoy there keep sieges.
A balance between graphics and performance is a given, but there should be a balance between gameplay and graphics too unlike the "gameplay > graphics any day!" formula. I play online games like Archmage (text-only) and many old classics so I know where you're coming from, but the MMO world can and should do better then the competition to win subscribers. They will not do so with gameplay alone. It's as simple as that.

if i have the choise of a cartoonish game or realistic graphics game, i take the cartoonish game without even thinking. simply because i think cartoonish games gives me a more fun experiance, with less uncanny valley iritations, and headache.

    I don't need realism, i need entertainment.

You're arguement is invalid until we actually get a look at the game running on High Res max option graphics. The beta is set to Low everything, base graphics and looks exactly like WoW, slightly better, on Max.

Just consider that, have you ever turned AoC down to minimum and seen how much ass it looks like? I did just to see the difference. So we'll see, just don't nay-say until you've seen something thats actually a comparison.

You completely misunderstood me. I'm not arguing anything other then a person's freedom to say he won't play a game because of graphics or gameplay, because an MMO needs that balance. Maybe you're saying the argument other people are making against pre-release WAR graphics are invalid? I would agree, seeing as how I never judged or complained about that.

I'm well aware the beta is set to low and so far, I enjoy the screenshots I've seen. And yes I have set AoC from high to low and seen the difference. Neither is playable for many people. I personally can play it, but don't think Funcom is making enough effort to fix what is wrong with the game so I won't give them $15/month.

The graphics in AoC wasn't really an issue, only during sieges.  The main issues for AoC are, incompentent management, lack of content, and broken promises, and much more.

For me when choosing an MMO there are 4 key factors i take into consideration. Gameplay, Graphics(style of graphics), the type of player-base i think that game would attract and of course how much freedom I have. To bad the freedom part is practically non-existant now-a-days. Every decent fairly new MMO atm are all lvl base . Well except EvE but i hate pure space games so meh guess im screwed for now

They were not an issue if you had good enough card and pc.

Problem is a lot of people didnt.

Fact that people who had pretty high spec PCs then went on top have graphic issues in sieges shows that the developers made a bad decison.  They chose graphics over more important elements of an MMO.

I know at least one person that bought the game loaded onto his new decent specced laptop and couldnt play at all.

MMO is all about numbers and Funcom went on to launch far too many servers which they seem unable to to merge even if they were able.     Their dwindling subscriber base is now spread accoss a lot of servers so they are going to find it challenging to retain customers happy to play a niche mmo,

Yes I agree.   For me there is a balance between stopping (or realistically limiting) genuine grief play and cheating and trying to run a nanny state that stiffles creative or minority gameplay styles in favoutr of protecting little billy from crying when he comes across someone smarter, better or less moralistic than him.

If yu take risks in a mmorpg you should face consequences if they dont pay off, not have a team of GMs chasing someone down becasue they "stole" something from you, lied to you or said your mums a hoe etc !

When mmorpg worlds are relatively free from petty rules and policing they become more interesting and risky places to be, where people learn a bit more about society, people and what role play actually means.
