video card

kage-no-shikage-no-shi Member Posts: 110

so i plan on upgrading my video card in the next few days. I want to use either the xfx 9600 gt or xfx 8600 gt. They are the ones i want for the right price. But im not sure if they will work for my 2005 gateway gx7022e media center computer. Right now only the powedr supply has been changed. So can the cards work with my comp and if so which would work best????

P.S. i know the 9600 is newer so usually better but since my comp is a bit old im not sure if a good card closer to my comps creation would be better.

well what is the speed of your cpu?

how much memory do you have?

how many watts is your power supply.

these are important questions to ask when purchasing a video card so you dont bottleneck your system.

Go to start, open your "Run" program and type in Dxdiag, and something will come up so you can see everytihng in your computer

why do you have a 800watt power supply with that given system thats too much PSU for your system i have a dual core with 2 raptor drives and a 640gb hd as and a 8800 GTS and 5 fans, and i have a 550watt PSU.

you got a pci express slot. so a 9600 can go in there. i dont think it will bog your system very much if at all. though you do have a 3ghz single core cpu anything higher may be a problem.

No such thing as too much PSU really, running a PSU near it's capacity constantly will generally shorten it's lifespan considerably. Using a much higher wattage PSU for low-watt use is generally more efficient, it's not like it draws 800 watts even when your system doesn't use that much.

There are 800w power supplies and 800w power supplies.   As you know and he prob doesnt a crap 800w power supply wont beat a better quality lower powered one.

I just bult a decent specced pc and I went for a 550 too to run a quad core with 2 hefty graphics cards in crossfire.

ps issue is almost same as the ram issue - a lot of people stick crap cheap slow ram in their pcs instead of better quality faster ram.

lol.    sure if i had the choice of a top quality 800w or a lower powered one of similar quality for the same price id buy the more powerful one.     But chances are he has a cheap one - he cant change it now and it prob isnt going to make alot of difference but the guys q above is perfectly valid.
