For the Subscribers, Why is Ryzom worth playing?

khas001khas001 Member Posts: 102

I've looked at the trailers, I've seen the Screenshots & I've looked over the website. Ryzon is very pretty and 'appears' to be very well made.

I want to hear it from the players though, I've found no-one tells it like it is better then someone who's shellin' out $$$ for a game.

So here it is guys & gals, tell me what you like, love and hate about "The Saga of Ryzon"

What I like most about SoR is the great community, so many great people.

I think it was released a bit too early, and that it still needs a lot of work, but it's definately worth my time.

I also love the graphics, the characters look great, and I love the way you can customize your face.

I think the sounds are ok, but not incredibly good.

I haven't had any bad lag lately, that's good, because I used to.

Oh, the in game atmosphere is good too, it has gotten a lot better since they added more objects, like boxes and tents and camps, makes the world feel alive.

Well, that's about it I think.

Ryzom is different, you either like it or you hate it, there's no middle ground. ;)

If the most important part of a MMORPG for you is an immersive world you will like Ryzom, if the most important part of a game for you is to have a powerfull character you will not like Ryzom. If atmosphere and lore is important for you then you will like Ryzom, if cool items and loot is important for you then you will hate the game. ;)

Star Wars Galaxies was my first MMORPG. Played SWG for about three months, and got sick to death of people whining about "the good old days" before mounts and how they holo-grinded and mastered 32 professions. If there were no Jedi in SWG, I might have stayed there. I really enjoyed the Teras Kasi melee professions.

BUT the other players were Jedi obsessed and turned me off in a major way. And noone is roleplaying. Everyone in my guild gets on Teamspeak and talks politics and what their kids did that day.

In a year, Ryzom will be where SWG is now. Mounts and and vendors and all kinds of other goodies and features we'd like to have now. But there won't be any freaking Jedi, Bounty Hunters, Imperials or Rebels for people to whine about. And that's a major plus for me. (Though the "fame" rankings seem to be headed the Imp/Rebel direction, only with four parties instead of two... Not sure how I feel about that yet.)

The default keyboard shortcuts are wonky -- I still have to customize them. And there are some other odd interface issues. But it loads much faster than SWG. Ryzom wants a beefier video card than SWG does, I've noticed, but the visuals are much nicer than SWG.

I'm enjoying learning the new mythology and exploring newbie island as I gain fight skills. That sense of newness and adventure is what I find most appealing so far.

ryzom really does suck, i played the beta, the armours all look the same when you craft them, the combat doesnt seem to be ballenced and theres nothing really to do except craft, there is also a big learning curve for the skills, and if you mess up , you cant reset them

You want to know why it's worth paying for? Because when I read about City of Heroes it was said that they would fill in the slow times between patches with live events. Well I played the game for 3 months and not one event happened. All they gave was excuses, and Statesmen with his wonderful "Wait till you see what is coming, you will be blown away". Well I got sick of waiting and was never blown away. And I was fed up with hearing about an expansion pack when the original game was SEVERLY lacking content.

I played Ryzom for 2 weeks and they have already had a live event. There were no excuses, they just did it. That alone demonstrated to me that the people behind Ryzom want their game to succeed. It also demonstarated that unlike so many other MMO's live events are actully going to happen.

Don't mean to get off-topic, but City of Heroes just had a live event and monsters were invading!!!  It was a blastimage

Personally, that's about the same reason I left City of Heroes basically. I know they recently just had an event but it was too little too late =(. The lack of patches also bothered me greatly. It took almost 4-5 months (I think I'm right about this) for them to get two content patches out. In the interium between the first and second virtually nothing was done to remedy class balance issues. For the most part all we got was, "There's some great stuff planned, it's awesome! Wait till you see how balancing it is...soon...". Worst part about it is that only 1/2 of the stuff promised was implimented by the second patch, I was still left waiting for a slew of promised fixes that never made it.

As much as I wanted to play CoH the lack of changes, updates, and overal content turned me away. It's too soon to see if Ryzom will offer that but so far it's been very interesting. Only time will tell for me I guess, as I never really played the beta.

As Zohar pointed out, it was too late. It took COH 4 months to get two patches out. The first patch was simply 10 upper levels they didn't have time to get to pre launch. So I was left waiting for months with nothing new and different to keep me interested or excited in the game.
With Ryzom within 2 weeks they were doing something to get players more interested in the game. Was it something huge? No. Are there things that the game is missing and won't be out for a month or two? Yes. But the fact is that they are doing things while they are working on getting new stuff in game to keep people excited and interested. That is the reason why I think it's a game worth looking into and playing.

after I beta tested for 3 weeks it went to closed beta i tried to follow the open weekends caught a couple game seemed OK to me. I liked making my own armor and so on and being able to cross train your own hybred.  but the quest system seemed lame and gameplay to the laggy side. I run a hi end gammer system with 3k cable speed. I didnt see the 15plus buck a month charge when others charge 12 13 it adds up over time. I guess it just waqsnt that new and different for the extra money. I am partial to my daoc rvr though.

    Ryzom rocks!image

I played in the open beta weekends and the open beta before release, and just received my pre-order last weekend.  I will admit there is a learning curve, but unlike other MMORPGS:

    1. You CAN'T gimp your character! At worst, you will have to put in a few monotonous levels of crafting to make a different choice...same with harvesting...There are no stupid fighting skills [once you figure out how/when to use them] - same with mage spells.

    2.  There are NO CLASSES!  Your character can learn to do whatever s/he wants.  You want to craft, craft...you want to harvest [for profit or for crafting materials], harvest...you want to fight or use spells, do it.  There are no artificial barriers - you're a dwarf, you can't cast fireball type BS.

    3. PvP is better balanced than most games.  If you learn to fight well [learn how to best use your special attack bricks],  take hp and stamina upgrades, and most importantly, upgrade your equipment [including adding your best - or better yet your best mage friend's highest damage - spell] , you can take on people who are "higher level" than you are.

    4. Casual gamers are welcome!  Since there are no specific "X level only" areas, you can explore most of the mainland areas as long as you are careful [VERY careful].

    5.  The mob AI is very good, especially the predator-prey modelling.  I love watching a carnivore fighting with an herbavore, then finishing off the survivor.image  It's also ROTFL when you range attack a carnivore from within a herd of herbavores - they scatter [stampede!] when the carnivore comes running your way.

Call me a fanboi if you will, but there is not another game out there at present that looks or plays this good.

    game is laggy and unfinished
dont play zorai (no ppl for team and the laggiest place)
    but kinda fun

nothing is realy new (new is only how u kill mobs..u can customize most of ur actions)
this game is not for soloers if u r not pure crafter (btw craftig in games is stupid ..its like work online for free lol)

    game isnt bad
    but..isnt that really good too

about PvP no idea how it can work..i think if u r melee u cant PvP at all ..no idea

conclusion ..nice 2.5 generation mmorpg with good grafics but abit dull gameplay
dont think PvP can be any good here
if u r crafter u can enjoy it

What i like most about it is:

    1) The atmosphere. It has a terrific atmosphere, with realistic environments, that change frequently. The AI of the monsters is better than most games a year after release, and with the upcoming 2 patches its about to get better. Ive never seen packs of mobs come up too you in the wild, and fights between differant species like you do in Ryzom...i think that feature is pretty unique

    2) I like the building block system that allows you to create some pretty complex actions consisting of many differant skills. A player last night outlined a action for prospecting that he created which consisted of 10 differant skills rolled into the one mouse button click/or hotkey.

    3) The community, even though small at this stage, is extremely friendly and helpful. Im told its been that way since beta, and it continues into retail.

Ive barely scratched the game and the upcoming patches promise many new content features including player vendors, enhanced questing system etc, racial attributes etc etc...

Worth trying? Yes - if you can afford 50 bucks easily.

Worth playing? Definitely not yet - maybe 2005 though after they did put lots of work into it.

I like everything about the game as far as playability..  Hunting Crafting Harvesting..there isnt any downtime unless you want there to be.  You can do anythng and be anything as long as you are willing to spend the time in the different training abilities.  AS mentioned above the best part of the game is the people playing it..it is a very friendly atmosphere and have helped and been helped many times.

I am looking forward to the first major patch coming in about 2-3 weeks.

    few other points against it:

    - Cant run away from mobs... cant outrun them... i.e you start a fight if you cant win it you die it will chase u die till you die. Only way to save yourself is to make it to a guard which is you are out in mid of nowhere is improbable.

-Death penalty at later lvls is annoying as you cant solo anywhere and if you do you loose exp in the future.

    - World has no dungeons

    - World is pretty small

    - Game only has cookie cutter quests i.e Kill Z Bring Y items etc... no real story involved quests yet. IMO no rpg element as of yet

    - No classes, this for me is a bad point although others see it as good.... i dont. Basically it means everyone is a healer/fighter and not doing magic... cause magic is uber slow and sucks. Generally you do have 1 class you all are: Healer/Fighter with a dash of a trade skill either just crafting or harvest and craft. 95% of players fall or will fall into that 'class'. So to me its restrictive by the lack of uniqueness. Sure you can use different melee weapons but there isnt no real distinct difference between them and they haven't been balanced such that a 2 h lance/pike is usually best.

-Magic as mentioned is uber hard to level with 2 seconds or so casting delays by default... means slow fighting, especially when a fighter can do more damage melee in that time than mage.

    - No real RPG buffs

    - Hardly no content, and that is the killer for me. We are at release now yet you have no real story which was promised or guild outpost fighting etc or even a couple of decent quests that involve story/background

-LAG, people are getting horrendous lag from a patch recently implemented..... which confirms my point that the people who are playing now aren't playing they are beta testing still. Just paying to do it.

    Agree/Disagree?

I have really been pleasantly surprised with Saga of Ryzom thus far.

For a quick background... I tried it in the Closed Beta and was "eh" about it at the time.. the interface seemed clunky and overly complex and basic navigation and actions seemed very awkward. I was rather disappointed, but stopped playing and dismissed the game... but never really forgot about it. I was too intrigued by the world that Nevrax had created and all that they promised it would bring.

Some months later, I saw it on Retail shelves and thought, "You know what.. I've gotta give this game another shot"

I have, and am extremely glad I did.

Now for the reasons why I like it:

    1. Unique.
This is, far and away, the most unique MMORPG I've ever played. All MMORPGs I've played, despite their differences, have a similar "feel" to them. I can't really verbalize it, but perhaps some of you can understand what I mean. The world, the creatures, the art style ... everything about it just really stands out from what is currently out there.

    2. Gorgeous.
Just look at the screenshots. Nice right? Now understand that you are not seeing this game at its best. It's impossible to do so without seeing it in motion. Even the movies don't quite capture it. The graphics, the animation, the atmosphere.. it's all so well conceived and rendered that you can't help but be impressed. Hats off to the Nevrax graphics and animation team.. Superb job.

    3. Immersive.
The world is, to put it simply.. alive. While you're playing, life is going on all around you, sometimes in the most subtle of ways, such as tiny insects hopping about in the desert, or a snake slithering by.. Sometimes it's as eye-pleasing as a swarm of glowing insect flying overhead on their way to who-knows-where, or a cloud of odd-looking insects flittering about. Critters will run up and inspect you before running off again, or might lie down near you for a quick nap. I've had one follow me around a few times already.

The weather changes swiftly and smoothly - day turns smoothly to dusk, then night.. and so on... Even the color of the interface smoothly changes color from Green during the day to Blue in the evening, further adding to the "mood". Winds will sometimes pick up, accompanied by the increased wind sound-effects and the trees around you swaying more violently in the wind.

Herds of moose-like animals graze and move as a group. If a predator attacks, a group will break away from the herd and run to a safer location, while one of the less lucky ones must turn and defend itself from attack - Yes, the creatures in Ryzom actually attack - and kill - each other. It's truly amazing to behold. It just recently turned from Autumn to Winter... so there's clearly a complete seasonal system in place. It's quite a superb job Nevrax has done with the environment and ambience in Ryzom.

    4. Straight-Forward yet Complex.
This is a wierd one to explain. Ryzom's gameplay, in some ways, reminds me of Anarchy Online, but without such a steep learning curve. It's easy to get the hang of the most common tasks - movement, selecting, interacting, attacking, etc.. Yet, the game offers a considerable amount of depth by way of how you are allowed to develop your character. Nevrax has given you near carte-blanche to do as you wish. Want to be a full-on Mage? Do so. Want to be a Battle-Mage? Go right ahead! Want to be a pure Crafter or Harvester? You can... Want to do it all? Nothing's stopping you. Add to that the Action system that allows you to create custom spells, attacks and so forth out of building-blocks, called "Stanzas", and you have the potential for hours of experimentation and a highly customized character - I really look forward to seeing what discoveries the community makes in the coming days and weeks.

    5. Sound.
While there is no background music yet; something Nevrax has mentioned they will implement in the future, the ambient sound effects more than make up for it. As I mentioned above, the feeling that you are indeed out in desert, or in a forested area, etc.. complete, in no small part because of the excellent sound. I might even keep the music turned way down when it is implemented just to keep the immersion of the ambient sound intact.

    6. Great, Mature Community.
The community in Ryzom, thus far, has been great. If not a little "quiet" sometimes, they are polite, helpful and never disrespectful.. at least not in my experiences so far.

    7. Great Customer Support.
While I personally have not had to contact a GM, nor Customer Care rep, in-game or out, I have heard nothing but positive feedback from others who have about the timeliness and courteousy of the Nevrax support team. I don't doubt it for a moment.

Annnd... in a large nutshell.. those are some of the reasons I am playing, and thoroughly enjoying, Saga of Ryzom. It's a solid effort and a very fun game so far and I recommend anyone who's looking for something different from what's currently out there to give it a try.
