Amateurs Own Nasa

Nasa has been plagued with a bunch of failures.  Meanwhile an amateur low budget project has successfully flown Spaceshipone into space and safely landed back on ground.  They won 10million dollars for doing this.

The truth is in the details.........

they must fly agin within 2 weeks to get the money

they only went a few thousand feet past the minimum.

    Still it's very impressiveimage

I think this was the second time they did it, the first one was a test flight but it wasn't within 2 weeks.  I have faith they can do it.

I've also heard that Virgin airlines will charge people $200,000 to fly into space.

They will have a two day training course...  you'll only be "weight less" for 4 [yes FOUR] minutes.

    I don't think that's worth my $200k

I think the whole point of having a contest is to drive the price down so it is affordable by the average person.  Kind of like Mudflation in EQlive.

I heard about Virgin, too.  I also heard that there is talk of having a permanent hotel in space.

But $200k for 4 minutes of weightlessness....that hurts.

Well, when you have millions of dollars because you're a rap star, nothing like spending some bling bling to see your home world. image

I wouldnt say Virgin were amatuers as such. They have been flying planes for years, notwithstanding endless round-the-world hot air ballon attempts by Richard Branson and the 'tilting' trains that run in England here. Although NASA have 'suposedly' been doing it for many years now, virgin have done an excellent job with the new VirginGalactic aircraft.

This makes you wonder then about long range space travel.  Say a company like Virgin (or even Microsoft, God  forbid) creates a manned mission to Mars.  They are the first ones there and stake their "claim".  What happens next?  Will there be governmental control?  Wars fought for new territories such as when the Americas were discovered?  Corporate wars?  It is a very interesting, yet frightening thought of what will come of this.

Sweet!  That means a lot to NASA and the general public.

Drives the cost of space flight down by 1000x fold!

Good job to them!  *hat goes off* imageimage

No one points out that the Plane took 30 million to make.

That's really nothing if you think about how much it cost to launch something NASA made into space.

You mean like the $264 million dollar Genisis craft that crashed in the desert? Yes Nasa wastes money.

Lol, good to see your desire for them is still there despite the amount of failures and little accomplishments they have made, still cool to smaller orginisations are making big impacts.

My selfish motto is "If it is not going to happen in my lifetime then I do not care". One reason why I do not recycle. The other reason is once I dropped a beer bottle on my foot- Which shattered -when I was carrying out my recycling container.::;^`::

With that being said, it brings to question how far the MMORPG EVE ONLINE is from Reality? image

I think everything's going to have to go through NASA first.

Can you picture Microsoft and outer space?
