Questions for Magus players

Hey all,

I was wondering how many of you had a chance to play the Magus during CB or the preview weekend - specificially those of you that had a positive experience with the class. What is it you like about it? What awesome things were you capable of doing? Did you kick butt in RvR? Just wondering why it seems like so few players are considering this class (cause I think it has a lot of potential). Anyway, thanks in advance.

I did play a Magus in the Preview Weekend up to rank 11. They were fun to play, but not very useful in RvR. Lack of decent spells, buggy pets, etc. In RvR scenarios, my Magus was always targetted first as they stood out the most, and people must have known that they were underpowered. Again, this is just my experience from the first tier. I don't know about the rest of the game.

They do look amazing on the disc, though. I know they are getting a much needed overhaul before launch, so we'll have to see a list of changes.

Waiting for Fallen Earth, World of Darkness, Old Republic, FFXIV

Really? They're getting an overhaul? This is the first I've heard about it... should be interesting.

Edit: BTW, what do you feel they need to do? Give them more burst damage? More AE? As far as I can tell the only thing the sorcerer has going for it is more AE...

i did not play as one but i have seen them in action and i always try to kill them asap not becaus ethey are strong but because once they get going they can pick off alot of people on your side and they become hard to kill.

I playe to lvl 16 rvr 14 and no i dont think they re useless in rvr but they are not a solo rvr class you will need help. Where its strenght lies is being defencive not offensive because our pets cant move. On defence with a zealot he and i held and killed 4 of the opposite team

I didn't get to play one very long myself, only preview weekend and only to level 7, but I thought I did alright...

I mean, as soon as I stopped running that is... If a melee'r ever came at me and I tried to run, someone would always take me out, I never ever got away... But when I started standing my ground and casting instant spells, people tended to tuck tail and run from me, heh.

Aye, once healers decided to actually heal me I felt things went much better, lol.

Well yea, I think what he means is that some classes can survive a bit longer if they decide to get reckless and run into the fray without their group, but ultimately that's pretty suicidal.

i found the magus to be an awesome tank when healed in rvr. first off he has tons of instants so you dont have to get off casts, secondly hes cloth so everyones like mmmm easy meat and try to take you down but when healed you tank as good as plate does with a 2 hander cause of the stats on your pvp armor.  and finally when the ai wasnt broken the area effect pets dps really does add up when no ones paying attn to him as it hits all targets in range and does it endlessly

  • Magus is horrible. It's a glass squirt gun. To call it dps is a joke. Shaman/Archmage do more damage. Magus is one class you have to worry about losing one on one fights in pve. Its only redeeming quality is as debuff support! The disc looks cool, but has no relevance to the class. The reason players attack Magus first is because they know its an easy kill!

Wow, lots of very different opinions on the Magus...

First off, ANY dps, and tank class for that matter, can do well with a pocket healer behind them.  I kept an ironbreaker alive while on my runepriest and watched as he held off 4 destruction and managed to kill them all. (They weren't the smartest players and should have attacked me instead, but I guess they figured that 4v1 was easy pickings.)  This is common.

Second, the magus class seemed the least useful to me in closed beta and the preview weekend.  With the tug and war of battle along with the constant movement for objects, i did not think the magus was very useful with their stationary pets.  Magus obviously can still dps but I have yet to see one top the damge or kills meter.

I found playing a witch elf was FAR more useful, even though every target I went after was a suicide mission.  Just stealth, pick out a squishy, burst your hardest, and then repeat if you aren't being targeted.  Best class by far for taking out healers (witch hunter has similar mechanics).

I was not aware that magus are receiving a revamp.  Hopefully this will make them more appealing.  Right now everybody that only wants to be first on the damage meters roles a sorceress or bright wizard.

We are supposed to be the support Sorc/BW, although we are very weak. Our damage is low, our survability is low and even our support is pretty weak, although i'm 99% sure Mythic will revamp the class(Even after the release is fine, as long as they won't wait too much)

I was originally very excited about the Magus. The addition of the daemon didn't go over well with me but I think it was necessary that some class mechanic was added. After getting it up to level 16 during the Preview Weekend I've since scratched it off my list of potential class options come release. They lack serious DPS (although I've been told Mutating Blue Fire helps somewhat) and the daemon can often become a handicap as the AI is very buggy, they're immobile, and the added DPS often isn't enough to make it worth the 3-second cast time. As mentioned above, they're glass cannons without the boom. Because of the disc and lack of any real survivability, they stand above most others and make for very attractive targets.

If you can manage to find a support class to follow you around and pocket heal, the Sorcerer is a major improvement over the Magus. Being able to toss out massive damage with full backlash is extremely easy as long as you have the occasional HoT on you. Bursting down enemy casters with 3 spells in under 5 seconds is just too appealing compared to the vulnerabilities of the Magus.
