i'm curious to see how darkfall will deal with this problem. i doubt scaling down graphics alone would solve it especially with twitch based combat.
i'll reserve judgement on the graphics because they weren't at full as some of you say but i do wonder why they didn't record this highly anticipated video in better quality.

Anybody that's truly *that* worried about graphics isn't, in my opinion, a real MMO fan - or for that matter, a real gaming fan full stop. Graphics are nothing more than an extra measure to help engage the player, something which shouldn't be necessary if a game's actual gameplay is engaging enough in itself.

This is correct, 100% correct. And the people who are making complete judgements about this game purely based on graphics, which arent even bad, just are beyond my comprehension.

i accept the graphics are a tad crappy due to the tech requirements of the game but seriously...even for such a tech heavy game...they can do better ( and no doubt they will try). SWG was pretty openworld/big and it managed to have way better graphics than what Darkfall currently has.

Awsome game, cant wait.
I also agree 100%.
Despite the graphics looking pretty mediocre (wow without art direction), it really seems to be pretty fun. More so than I thought before seeing the video.

saying swg had "way" better graphics is pushing it.
if you look at 10:00 to 10:25 in the link i gave above in this thread...and look at that temple in the sand/desert it reminds me for some reason of tattoine and there is no way that tat was any better than that.
Im a swg vet and if i really cared enough i could pull up side by side screen shots. DF graphics are just as good, if not better regarding some of the landscape ( i personally think the environment is far superior)
however the character animations need some loving, but it is far from being a gamebreaker. if thats what it takes to finally have a game with massive battles....SIGN ME UP

All this talk over graphics really makes us Darkfall 'haters' sound lame. Who gives a flying fuck if they're bad or not, theyre functional and the styling is acceptable, what the video doesn't give us is any real meat and thats where we need to be focusing our attention. We have no idea how the game actually plays or what features have actually been implemented in a working fashion, again all have seen is more locations (although admittedly some of that are the most awe-inspiring I've ever seen in an MMO) and objects carrying out scripted actions.
I guess we just go away and check back in 3 months to see if the actual 'game' is developing OK and leave the Darkfall 'fanbois' to fantasise over a million features that may never make it.
About graphics and gameplay, doesn't EVE Online have quite good graphics and massive battle at the same time? I've heard of the occasional node crashes, but I've heard of succesful battles in the game, too.

Yea but once you get a fair amount of people together for a fight...it is a complete lag fest. You get a nice 10 v 10 or 20 v 20 its a lot of fun and runs smooth if your personal hardware is good enough....but some people even have problems with that.
Go beyond that and you are just out of luck sometimes depending on where you are at.
Or simply try undocking in the main jita station....and then compare it to undocking in another system.
im not saying this is caused by its graphics only, this happens in a lot of mmos...but the higher graphics and the more lag you will get.

Physics. No check.
Running up vertical walls. Check.
Unable to jump something poking 6 inches off the ground. Check.
Weather system? HAHAHAHAHA.
Collision detection? Not unless you mean doors opening when you got close.
Yes, SWG had better graphics, but it also had a much MUCH more limited engine to run on.

Having a lagfeast cause of "too" good graphics isnt an option at all if you'd ask me.

Quite honestly? Darkfall should be happy if it manages to gather the crowd EVE has in its "failure". If DF delivers, I am thinking it might attract about the same numbers, at least I would hope it does.

Yes i agree.
We didnt talk about numbers of subs though but if "too" good graphics will make large epic battles a lag feast.
As i see it, its a balance. You cant have epic large scale battles without lag without lowering a bit on the number of polygons involved.
Today there is NO other game with such good graphics in an open sandbox seamless world with so many features : sea battles, city building, city sieges with balistas, catapults, cannons, freedom with archers climbing trees and sniping other players, etc... etc... etc...
Only Vanguard tried to make such a world, but it failed miserably. Today it's only 50% feature complete compared to Darkfall. And regarding the graphics, the Vanguard engine doesn't even support basic features like object shadows (objects like houses etc... have no shadows) and rain drops hitting the ground; these engine features are available in Darkfall and they make the world feel much more real and immersive.
Compared to this, the other games are only the same old linear leveling theme parks. Very limited mmorpg worlds.
Since the past 8 years, and since games like UO many years ago, Darkfall is the first game that expands gameplay to really bring something new to the table.
Edit: (Eve is probably the only exeption to what I said above).

i'd be willing to sub to game with similar graphics so long as the gameplay was fun and engaging. While the graphics lacked the standard of titles from larger studios, I still felt they were consistant enough with the aesthetic and found it appealing. There really were some good looking moments in the movie so I wasn't let down. Hopefully, there actually is a game there. We'll soon find out I guess
Like was already said, who the hell cares about graphics?
srsly gtfo with that crap, this is supposed to be a forum for gamers.
The past decade or so in the gaming industry has, for the most part, done nothing but improve graphics and ignored improving gameplay, in my opinion. So go play some of that crap if you want pretty.
Anyways.. Personally, i still thought that most of the graphics were pretty damn nice, and may even require me to upgrade lol.. Don't get what the hell most of you are even complaining about.
The only two things that bugged me about the visuals were already said though. The explosions from the cannon balls and the fire on the buildings? Yeah, those looked like a sprite animation ripped out of Doom or something, I'll admit lol.. but like was said, it wasn't running on top notch settings. If you want them to be prettier, I'm sure there's settings to make them prettier. To me, that bit reminded me of Counter-Strike, you can turn the smoke bombs into these choppy 2d looking sprite animations, or have them turned up to look like actual smoke. My guess is that's what happened with the cannon balls.
The other thing was yeah, that dwarf looked goofy as hell running down the slope haha, kinda like he was bouncing back and forth and wobbling like a fat furry penguin of some sort.
Overall, I'm still excited about the game. If it's not pretty enough for you then play something else. From the beginning this game's ultimate goal wasn't to be the prettiest, even though I personally thought a lot of the graphics were very nice, and much better than I was expecting from a pvp oriented game.
My main complaints with the video, is that I would've preferred to see a lot more footage from a player's playing perspective, rather than some weird kind of staged short movie. When we play, it's not going to be like that. It won't be synchornized people bouncing around and running out at certain times in perfect formations and I doubt one single orc is going to run up and scream a war cry at the wheel after seizing an enemy ship. Stuff like that just ticks me off, personally, but whatever. I saw like half a second showing that there i some sort of first person aiming stuff going on, which is what I was looking to see. Just wish they would've shown 17 minutes of that instead of whatever the hell the rest of that video was.
On a decent computer with the graphics options turned down, yes. I played L2 for over 3 years and even mid ranged comps for the time could do playable frame rates in a siege with the graphics at a minimum. Sure you would have lag spikes now and then but nothing that was "game killing" as usually they were at the server level so everyone experienced them at the same time and they usually lasted less than 1 second. This is more than doable and to say it isn't is just plain ignorant. If a 5 year old game has pulled it off Darkfall certainly can.....no doubt in my mind.
Edit: Hell I even sieged once or twice on my craptastic Dell laptop. Sure the framerate wasn't great but it was still more than playable. Just a little annoying.
Bren
Either your pain threshold is considerably higher than mine or low settings is stick figures.
Just curious, but how were your experiences with L2 mass combat? How was lag for you? What settings did you have to go to?
Thanks in advance.
I seriously don't think zymurgeist played Lineage II enough to get to any of the mass PvP battles. I could be wrong but he doesn't seem like the type. In L2 the mass PvP is really an endgame activity and it takes a lot of dedication to the game to get that far. L2 is not WoW by any means as the content isn't spoon fed to you by the developers. You have to go out and make it for yourself. In this respect L2 is a lot like DF should be as it was a very political game. The open PvP atmosphere created a world of shifting alliances and sometimes those allainces wouild lead to all out warfare on a scale I've never seen in any game before or since.
Also L2 bred friendships that far outlasted the game itself as in an open PvP game you really find out who your true friends are. L2 is a very political game that is all driven by the players themselves and my hope is Darkfall will be the same way. I finally just got bored with L2 after 3 1/2 years and needed a change. I'm hoping that Darkfall will be that change eventually but only time will tell at this point. I need to play the game before I can know if this is even a good game let alone the right game for me.
So what do we have to judge the game on? A 600+ MB Video. The graphics are about all that we can judge. And yes, they are important. MMO's need to create immersive, believable worlds - worlds people are willing to pay money to play in. What's more, all the griefer's and PK's that follow this game should welcome an inviting game world; it's hard to get your nut off fucking with people if no one else plays the game.
Besides, it's as absurd to criticize people for judging the games graphics as it is to praise the gameplay of a games you've NEVER played. How do you know the game is "Awesome!!"

While the graphics lacked the standard of titles from larger studios, I still felt they were consistant enough with the aesthetic and found it appealing. There really were some good looking moments in the movie so I wasn't let down. Hopefully, there actually is a game there. We'll soon find out I guess
Yeah, threads like this stink of carebears, imo.

Agree
Because Tasos said so.
