Wow is about all I can say. This is going to be one of the top 3 mmorpgs for the upcoming years. Enjoy.

I"m looking forward to the planned enhancements. Ryzom seems to be about where Star Wars Galaxies was a year and a half ago.

In the few days I've been playing, I've focused on melee. Combat is nothing special so far, but once I've reached a point where a small group of gingos or kipees can't kill me, I'm going to work in my magic casting skills. Then I'll have skill blocks to experiment with in creating my own spells/actions.

But until then, I'm having a lot of fun exploring a whole new world...

Ryzom is working almost well, SWG did not a year and a half ago !! :)

Someone should do a study or comparison of some kind that charts MMORPG launch cycles. I'm new to the genre, but what I've heard about SWG parallels SoR uncannily...

A lot of folks are saying they did a bad thing releasing the game this early. The problem is, in 40 days or so, you have 2 huge MMORPGs being released that are going to drain the player base from dozens of current games already on the market. Granted, SoR might have been released in poor shape, but if they hadn't released when they did, then they'd probably been worse off for sales.

The game looks really cool, but as I found out with City of Heroes, looks aren't everything.

Perhaps 40 days in the U.S, for the rest of the world they'll have to wait till next year for WoW. Its pretty well certain at this stage. If your in Australia like me, probably half way through 2005, which is a long long time away..

By then id say most of Ryzoms issue will be sorted and its significantly differant enough in feel to retain its player base, and pick up some customers, especially in Europe.

Its a quality game i feel, and the problems it does have are fixable in the short term.

Its interesting that you use exploration as your key to the fun to be had in Ryzom. I have found after a few days play that exploration is very low on the Ryzom list of things to do. You start on newbie islands that are basically fairly safe training grounds, there are a number of starting encampments and a few routes between them, but essentially one encampment is the same as another. These newbie areas seem to be important in gaining a foundation for your character before you make the trip to the mainland. I left them too early I think. Most people are advising levelling up their primary skill to around 30 before leaving the safe shores of the island. With a lot of collected loot and money behind them. Theres not a lot of exploration to be had on these islands.

Then you move onto the mainland, where you can explore quite large cities. But as you step out of your city to hunt and harvest, you are quite hemmed in by the aggressive mobs that circle the city area quite closely. In my experience, you can level, harvest and craft all around the city and the need for exploration of the world is much less. Key to early enjoyment of the game is the tinkering and building of a skill set you want to play with, rather than the wandering and exploratory side to getting around the world. Exploration itself in the game seems secondary to the other sandbox style gameplay mechanics that are on offer to you. Obviously once you are high enough to wander further out with the ability to possibly handle yourself better, you can start to see whats out there.

    Hiyas,

Well the only reason I bought the game was a filler until WOW came out in Europe.

I was pleasantly suprised at how nice the game played and how efficient the GM's where.

The game is lacking in a few features and needs a tweak here and there before they start adding more major content.

The next patch states we are getting NPC traders to sell our stuff /whooop

I can see a bright future for Ryzom if they can get everything in they promised.

My hopes is that this game can tide me over until Everquest 2 is released. I'm not saying that SOR is bad at all, on the contrary it's a lot better then I expected, but I have my heart more or less set on Everquest 2. Granted the game could stink when it's released but I have high hopes for it.

Indeed.. SoR really took me by surprise - pleasantly so.

I'd tried it out in Beta, was unimpressed and just decided to forget about playing it.. Though I did keep track of its progress becuase I found the game-world, and the design (awesome!) to be so unique and intriguing.

I decided, literally on spur of the moment, to pick it up when I saw a few copies of it on the shelf at a local EB Games. I didn't even know it had been released.

In any case, I am pleasantly surprised at Saga of Ryzom. It so suits the type of game I most enjoy, unique, deep, and a little "wierd" (in a good way :-). It's taken me creating 5 new characters to get my head around a few things.. but that's good. That means it's got alot of depth and much to learn.

I, too, am seeing some of the issues that others have mentioned and that still others are all up in arms about... and am fine. I tolerated the rolling train-wreck that is Horizons for a couple weeks before giving up on it. Saga of Ryzom is *far* better than Horizons is.. even many months after its release... And Nevrax seems very determined to make it even better. So.. the future's looking good!

In any case.. A great game. I'm glad I decided to give it another chance.
