Hi all, I'm new to the boards. How many other peeps are playing EVE Online using the Mac client? And, how's it going?
Oh, did I mention that I'm an addict?

afaik CCP dont have a native client for mac
and btw your web give allot of 404
BestSigEver :P
The mac client is not 'native' .... it's some mysterious wizardry involving transgaming and something called cider. All I know is that it works great on a MBP and an iMac.
Sorry about the 404s ... I was clogging our server with housekeeping this afternoon.
Just Launched: Macs in EVE
Cider is for MAC what Wine is for Linux. I hope that clears things up a bit.
I'll never understand why someone wanting to play games would buy a Mac...
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
So they do not support the other guy (Microsoft)?
MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.
You should really add a "I was bored and just wanted to vote in this poll" option.
Some people want to game, but rely on their Mac systems for their careers... or perhaps, prefer the customer service and general simplicity OSX offers. Vista mimics many of these features today.
Therefore... I'll never understand this argument, given that Intel based Macs can run Windows now. I played WoW on both my Mac (Laptop on OSX) and Windows (Desktop) machines I had the same, infrequent issues, on both. In that respect -- I consider them equal in that gaming experience given that WoW is one of the few titles to have versions released for both Operating Systems.
Both Operating Systems have their pros and cons. Why hate?
Do you mean Cider or EVE?
If you mean Cider, it's a program for the Mac designed to emulate Windows API, so that Windows software can be used on a Mac. It would be pretty silly to develop a Windows emulator for Windows.
If you mean EVE, then yes, their client is primarily designed for Windows. The Mac and Linux clients are essentially just ports.

Frankly, I absolutely despise Macs marketing campaign which is the seed of my dislike for macs. Then on top of that, they are EXTREMELY expensive for what you are actually getting, and everyone is paying this high amount just to use their OS because they won't allow other computers to use their OS. Why can't you build your own computer and install OSX if it runs on intel based machines?? Because Mac doesn't want to lose out on the profit they can make by making their OS exclusive to their machines, which allows them to then charge out the ass for that mediocre hardware.

Because my macbook pro runs these games on the absolute highest settings with minimal to no problems at all:
Everquest 2
LOTRO
WoW
And I can run AoC and Vanguard on medium settings almost flawlessly.
And then when im not gaming I have the simplicity and accesability of OSX.

While I can't disagree necessarily with your point, it is the perogative of a consumer to buy what product they want and .. while I agree it's unfortaunate, if you're able and willing to pay -- Apple will continue to profit.
I do agree builiding one's own Windows based system is FAR cheaper in terms of bang for buck -- but not everyone has the time, interest or knowledge to do so.
Anyway, we're off topic. Sorry!!
This is very true, especially today with the newest MacBook Pros. The initial launch MacBook Pros that were Intel Based and "Vista Ready," if you paid fr upgrade the RAM to 2Gigs, aren't as capable however. The graphics card ATI 1600x didn't really allow for high end gaming.
Apple learned however, and now use 8600 Nvidia. I forget the specific card. Something like that however.

Thats exactly my question though. My gf's laptop can do the exact same thing(only with a lot bigger selection of games she can play at those settings) yet she paid half the price(and half the price in this situation is $1000 less than the Mac Book pro starting price)... So again I ask, why?

But your girlfriends laptop doesnt have OSX which so many of us have fallen in love with.

So you are telling me you would gladly pay $1000 for an OS? When you can get Windows for $89 and Linux for free?
To each their own I guess. I'm just glad I don't like OSX, otherwise I would be a lot poorer.

Not to be a stooge, but it doesn't seem like Mac users would be at home in a game like EVE. Most Mac users I have met in the past simply use the OS because it is supposedly hip/trendy (damn commercials), or because it uses a dumbed down GUI, or maybe because of a combination of the two. It doesn't seem to me like these kind of users would want to play EVE, simply because it is solely a niche game that takes pride in its complexity.
Sorry for the broad generalizations, but I find them to be pretty accurate.
Yeah I would definitely agree with this too, as I also think a big motivation people have to use Macs is that it is trendy.

First of all just because I paid an extra $1,000 for my computer dosent mean I paid that much more than every PC user out there. Many people on this site have invested well over $2,000 for their machines.
That being said, I didnt spend $1,000 for the operating system, I spent $1,000 for the ability to use it, and in the long run that was worth it to me. I used windows machines for most of my life. Having recently switched to mac (about 2 years ago) I have not had a single problem with it. Thinking back to all of the stupid issues I had with many of my windows machines I am glad to be running a mac. I have superior graphics, web, video, and music production abilities. I run some of the heaviest games on the market at high settings. The organization and accessibility on this thing is AMAZING. So many fun features. And it looks beautiful. Its just a solid machine.

I use a Macbook pro, and I love it. I didn't get it for gaming, but it does well enough on that front for me. It runs EVE really well, and it ran WoW when I played as well as half-life 2 just great. I have a Windows XP partition on the drive where I install most of the games that I can't run in the Mac OS.
As for why people get macbooks. I purchased mine for graphics and teaching graphics/Prepress to students at a school using iMacs as the primary computers. My mac does everything I need flawlessly, and I work much more quickly than I do on an equivalently powerful PC. I still have my PC tower at home though, and use it regularly for a few games here and there and for some web surfing. I bought my mac knowing full well their capabilities and their failings, and I went in knowing I was spending more for less power, but I still prefer the Mac OS over Vista for the work that I do.
My wife and her best friend though are another story. My wife's friend bought a macbook because it was trendy and her sister had one. After much discussion I talked my wife into a basic Dell. The selling point was the pink case with the flowers All she does is email, photos, music and some web surfing. Her friend does the same, but came out $500 higher on the price tag. Honestly both computers were complete overkill for what they needed.
I guess what I'm saying is that if someone really knows macs, and plans to use it for actual work then I think they are a great computer to have. If someone is really concerned about computer gaming, from a price standpoint you still really do get more processor bang for your buck with a PC.
Some people balk at spending large amounts of money for a trendy PC, or a work PC. Personally I don't understand how anyone can drop $3,000 on a gaming computer. I'd just buy a PS3. I'm not everyone though, so to each their own. I'm glad for the competition on both sides and there's people on both sides of the spectrum. If it weren't for both the market would just get stale and innovation would completely drop off.
Hey, who hijacked my thread?!
I didn't mean to start a Mac vs PC debate here; I'm a long time power user of both. Recently we went mostly
Apple in my household, but we kept the gaming rig for FPS (big Battlefied junkies!).
I wasn't using a Mac for gaming, until someone introduced me to OGame. Holy cow, that game took over my life 24/7 for a couple of months before I came to my senses.
But by that time I had gotten spoiled playing a limited graphics no-reflexes kind of game on my Macbook Pro. I could play this game lying down! Literally!
I was looking around for a similar space-themed game I could lounge around with when I found EVE Online. The first thing I noticed was that the graphics were as stunning on the MBP and especially on the 24" iMac as HalfLife 2 had ever been on the high end windows gaming rig.
But EVE is a completely different kind of game, a thinking game in which you decide how you want to get where you're going. And you decide where that is.
And, you can decide whether you want to play it on a Mac or on a PC!
