For all thoses who say VG is on life support only.
This video highlights what has been done since 2007.
There is a seperate video for what is coming:
Maintenance and patches only, I don't think so...
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve

The dwarf on the poor boar looked crazy.
AFAIK another big thing the devs worked on, was creating tools for developing the game, which were simply missing.
Nice video (s), nice post.
Every time I see a daylight screenshot or video of Vanguard I get the same bad feeling. The world looks so fake; something is missing: where are the shadows?
We are in 2008 and this crappy game engine still doesn't have object shadows. Houses, objects, etc... have no shadows... How could they release such an unfinished game?
And I'm not even talking about water reflections, etc... which are even basic game engine features in free 2 play games today. I'm only asking for the most basic thing : shadows. The game looks great at night, but when the sun is high or inside buildings with lights it's so bad...
You actually think you have a computer that can play vanguard with shadows on everything. now thats funny .

Good point

I'm a little confused by this point that BigMango is making about no shadows in the game .I checked last time he said this and there are shadows .I saw shadows on tree's and cliffs? What exactly does he mean ?
"after the time of dice came the day of mice "
yes, you really don't want to play with shadows on
but do play with the fog effects as that really improves the look - surprisingly so - just wish there was a slider for this instead of having to fiddle with commands in the chat window every time you log in (though you can make a macro i think - never learned how to do that in my month of playing)
as for water - horrible - it can look decent from a distance but close up or actually in it you give up all pretense that it is the real thing
No there are NO object shadows.
Characters and trees have shadows. But objects don't. Buildings, houses, furniture, cliffs, stones, have no shadow.
Just look at any screenshot or video. Cities, objects,... look bland and fake.
If you have only played Vanguard you maybe didn't realize it. I suggest you try out a finished game for once, and you'll see.
I'm sorry for you if you are playing on some old hardware.
I have played Vanguard during beta and the first month of release (and tried it out again last month). I have always played with all of the settings maxed out, antialiasiang forced in the gfx display drivers (as the crappy VG engine still doesn't support antialiasing - wow the jaggy lines all over the screen are nice, we are in 2008 aren't we ?????) and anisotropic filtering 16x. To get even better visual quality than what is available in game I have also edited the ini file to display much bigger drawing distances (for grass, trees, objects, mobs, etc...). This since beta. And I never had any performance problems with this game.
And this was 1 and a half year ago, with an older PC than this one - I had an ati x1900xt512 (I have since upgraded the cpu, the ram and the gfx card). Today we are in 2008 for Christ's sake.
So yes, I can play with shadows and even ,much more detail on screen. Even AoC with much better gfx is no problem with everything maxed out.
Sorry, but I have to laugh hard when people with old PCs that can barely play Wow tell me "You actually think you have a computer that can play vanguard with shadows on everything. now thats funny". Yes you are very funny, indeed.

I am sorry to say this but if thats the best arguement you have for not playing a game, then you will never be happy with any game.
I think VG looks beautiful and I play with everything turned on, very little lag except in certain cities.
Same old argument, game not finished, if you look at any MMORPG you can pick fault and pull to pieces.

The videos make me want to return to Vanguard.
I was talking about this with my brother the other day, who is an avid gamer (not "hardcore" or "raider) like me since we both started EQ.
Do the following so we can all return:
I would really love to come back. I really would. But right now, at max level, not much for me to do!
Yes, of course every game has its problems.
I am talking about the shadows because this is what hurts my eyes so obvisouly every time I see a video or a screenshot about Vanguard. I think the problem is that they went for very realistic looking graphics, this is why the missing things like the object shadows are poping out so obviously. I always have this bad feeling like something is missing. At night it looks great though.
2 of the other important issues for me are the poorly implemented slow/boring combat (I like it fast and furious) and the lousy animations (what is this lousy barbie doll jumping animation ????)
It's not much. If they fix this, making the game fun to play with attractive/fun fast combat I'll embrace the game in a heart beat.
I never really noticed the house shadows to be honest, but I do know that mountains and city walls cast shadow. The shadow may not be an obvious dark area on the ground with a darker outline drawn around it, but I have seen shadows. Rent a flying mount on Kojan, for example, and fly through some of the valleys there. You go from blinding sunlight in one moment and then as you pass behind the mountain the world has a darker feel. It reminds me of walking through some of the think pine forests where I grew up as a kid... I was always glad to get back into the sunlight.
Shadows are nice to have in a game, though. I love running through a forest and seeing the tree shadows swaying on the ground when the wind picks up right before a storm hits. If I had to chose between two eye candy features though, I'd give up shadows in a second as long as it meant keeping the approaching weather effects. Seeing a storm approaching to me greatly outweighs and feelings associated with shadows.

One cool thng about shadows is that flying creatures have shadows. The other day I was playing and saw a vague shadow flying across the ground and looked up and saw a flying creature soar past. Since it was purple I as glad that it musta been flying too high to notice me.

I can't believe your complaining about the graphics of Vanguard. It was some of the best out there depending on what your computer can handle. There are a few graphical bugs here and there, and some areas are more "polished" than others, but i'd hardly complain. The trees and grass move, and what is this talk about shadows. There are shadows everywhere....
I don't see the slow combat stuff either. Try playing a monk, its fast and exciting. There are slower classes, as is the case with every fantasy team build mmo. I've played numerous fantasy mmo's from LOTRO, Everquest, EQII, WoW, Guild Wars, and Ryzom and this game has more content and variety of things and places. You can easily level 2-3 toons and never do the same quests, plus crafting is challenging and rewarding, and then there's diplomacy - an addictive way to level and again, not too easy, and extremely rewarding.

You might want to try Age of Conan. At least in the graphic & animation department you wont find anything better atm. Also combat is a lot more faster paced aka you have to mash buttons like crazy.
Im sure youll find there a setting where even your computer will go to its knees.

Dont be sorry ive been playing vanguard every setting maxed at 1920x1200 sence day 1
What is this?
I thougth the general consensus was that Vanguard was unorthodoxly unoptimized?
But whatever suits your argument I guess.
I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

I needed that joke ...thx
"after the time of dice came the day of mice "
Glad you liked it.
Well, maybe graphic isnt so ub0r important for some people.
You actually think you have a computer that can play vanguard with shadows on everything. now thats funny .
the lack of shading effects in this game are just lazy and poor development. It takes a lot of time and precision to do art the right way, and Vanguard took the lazy route. The environment looks fake, it looks synthetic, and it suffers from a lack of immersion from it.
Excuse it all you want but done properly, this game should have much better visual effects than it currently does.
Tecmo Bowl.
Vanguard isn't on life support because of a lack of fan-made trailers, it's on life support because server counts and subscriber numbers are what's considered vitality, and Vanguard has no room to dip even further with either.
You could say Vanguard is off life support if it opens two or three more servers, and populations for all of 'em are healthy; even then though Vanguard is left half as healthy as it was around launch, and would probably still be without other MMO mainstays such as boxed content expansions always in queue.
It's on life support. That doesn't mean the plug will ever be pulled, it just means the game is stuck in stasis in all financial considerations. More players are needed to generate more money for developers and content, and more developers and content are needed to attract more players. It's a catch-22 Vanguard'll never escape.
I watched the video and it did remind me of some of the higher quality aspects of Vanguard. Damn this game should be better than it is.
That being said I must be missing something as I don't really understand the original posters point. SOE announced the trial, character model revamps and something else I didn't exactly follow. Is that an expansion or is it just the revamp of a dungeon I have been reading about.
The game is nearing its 2 year mark and honestly not much has changed. Performanced has been ironed out and some project the much bigger Sigil team was working on have been completed. Otherwise it still looks like a slow road for any kind of game growth to be honest. I'm not saying the game is on its death bed, but it sure isn't being given the resources that it needs [some would say deserves].
It is sad really, because of all the games on the station pass this one has the most potential to be a contender.
Oh my god... i swear. It seem's more and more people here are using trivial excuses to put down the game.
Making me lose more faith in a online community especially this one. Where people have to say "Game sucks cause a fricken building can't cast a shadow" or "If they took out diplomacy... this game wouldn't suck" << that was my favorite. Or "The game doesnt hold my hand through it... whaaaaaa... VG sucks"
What the f**k ever happened to playing the game, and not being anal bout the trivial s**t. Whatever happened looking deep with in and actually to find the good. But it seem's to many people are stuck being incompentant with that.
I can respect more people coming in saying VG is not for them. And if they respect it enough to be like "Hey this wasn't for me but it could a game for you". Rather then someone coming writing a novel. How the game didnt hold their hand for example.. and the game is not worth it.
But hey whatever...... things will never change. I'm about sick of this damn website.
Some meaningful improvements have occurred in Vanguard due to people who felt the game weren't for them. The reason being they had a reason WHY it wasn't for them.
What good is feedback to the developers if the only people allowed to speak, were those already satisfied with the game and could do nothing but mull over what's already in-game?
As far as proper shadows and lightning, it's not too much to ask for given the developers have asked us to invest in high-end systems. It's not petty to expect from Vanguard what MMO's released generations ago offer; especially when Vanguard is just about a generation old itself soon.
Relax!
Beside Age of Conan ( that came after Vanguard ) and Everquest 2 ( that most players dont let all shadows on ), wich MMO are you playing that has full dynamic shadows in every object? (Lotro, L2, War, WoW, GW, D&D as Vanguard doesnt have full dynamic shadows)
About the OP, just compare the content added to Vanguard since the release with most MMORPGs...
A game without basic members in the developer team like modelers and artists is on life support.
