Wired magazine had an article on the upcoming Cities XL, with some details, and pics, describing how the mmo portion will work.
Article, with pics: http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/08/cities-xl-mayor.html

It's something different for the mmo fans out there, especially those non-combat types.
Enjoy.

I get excited everytime someone posts a link thinking that it's finally an open beta or released
But at least they have all the teams work into one project now. I can't wait to try the real thing.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
This looks really neat, my kid ggot me into playing a city builder he has, we would both probably enjoy this
playing eq2 and two worlds
No kidding. This looks pretty much awesome.
Check out the website if you get the chance...it has plenty of blog posts with more pics, and even some videos (although the vids focus on the city-building basics, not the mmo parts).
Devs have been pretty forthcoming in the forums as well.
It's second on my list of new games...right after Spore
Sounds good, altought i dislike Montecristo.
Also, why havent they kept and improved City Life? They basically trew it away.
Hopefully they wont screw up this time

So how is it an MMO?
Do you walk around your cities?

Does a MMO have to have walking around your cities and stuff?
I picture this more like a MMO-citybuilder...closest example I can think of are MMORTS games
I was just using that as an example of the way you could make it an MMO, because I didnt know how the game was made Multiplayer.
I just read you create citities in a world together.

This is really good news!
You're directly and indirectly interacting with a little over 1,000 people on a server via trade, population competiton(when people move out of your city they'll literally move to others), There's politics involved due to players interacting with each other(OMG I just had a great fire, send me finacial aid I'm a great and favorable trading partner surely you can't just forget me), Inter-reliance on people and just all around economic PvP(you have tourism, fighting over the top 10% of the social ladder with tax policies and anmenties).
Character advancement is there after all there's a differance between a level one hut and a market to the max level finely tweaked metropolis that sports a few massive traffic interchanges, public transportation, hospitals, and the economic/production power of an American state. The character shows real character/city shows real character as well instead of the normal red hair+pony tail, face #3, and the latest raid armor.
as for roleplaying. you are pretty much forced to the point of the game is to have a finely tweaked metropolis and to do that you're going to have to actually be a governer. The developers are also adding social networking componets to make communication about as easy as it is in this forum.
This is literally a jackpot for me. :drools and ignores the fact that he's gone fanboy to something that he would normally call vaporware:

Wah Wah Tunnels. Sweet haven't seen that in a city builder for some time. I am getting this despite it being a mmo. I hated the lack of terrain editing tools in SimCity Societies. It was more like decorate this tile then an actual SimCity game. Also the terrain generator looks pretty good. Hopefully, you are upstream or on the coast so no one can cut-off your sea trade network with dames.
I also have unfavorable opinion of Monte Cristo, but its hard to drop support on a project when its an mmo. If they can add modules like I don't know... a racing simulation, it would put this game over the top.

Its basically like Sim cities exept that each player has his own city to develop and depending on how good he is at it determins how much of the worlds NPC population lives there. You can also set up alliances with other player cities for things like selling exess power etc.
Its a good idea really and looks like a good diversion.
Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981
They have said that one of the forms of interaction will be competition over events (ie, hosting a major concert, of putting on the olympics).....
and, in mentioning the events, they said players would be able to visit each other's cities and witness the results.
Although, it sounds like you won't even need events to do that. One comment mentioned visiting other cities and leaving notes on you impressions for the builder.
Not everyone's cup of tea, I'm sure...but, it's a different direction for the genre, and that's right up my alley.
From their FAQ:
"Online and community services and some product upgrades will require either a monthly or one-time fee depending on the nature."
So, what do you think it's worth per month to play a game like this?
<edit>
They published another game like this called StarPeace which crashed and burned - the developer Oceanus Communications got out of the deal and teamed up with Sega.com who published the game as Legacy online.
"From the beginning it was clear that there was substantial work to be done, and even though we provided Montecristo with estimates of the time it would take, the release date was nevertheless pushed up on us."
"Eager to launch the game as soon as possible, a very ambitious launch date was set, preceded by an open beta that only lasted one month. We warned the publisher (Monte Cristo) that more time was necessary for extensive testing, but they decided to go forward with releasing it anyway."
From: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/2808/postmortem_oceanus_.php
Lets hope Monte Cristo has learned a few things about not pushing a game out before it is ready.
"The liberties and resulting economic prosperity that YOU take for granted were granted by those "dead guys"
Looks interesting. Shame Monte Cristo is a pants developer.
If I'm having fun I'd be more than willing to spend their planned $6 a month and then a couple more to unlock a GEM or two.
It's an MMO based entiredly around crafting with some politics tossed in, why wouldn't someone pay permonth for it. A city builder can keep me occupied for hours, especially ones that make it harder to break even. Basically it would replace my MMO slot and be more entertaining at that.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Looks interesting but not enough screen shots of the GUI and so forth to make a decision on whether or not it's something I'll want to play.
Goody, more variety in the MMO market. It looks quite interesting. MMOs don't have to be combat oriented.
This is combat oriented. You can bulldoze buildings of neighboring cities, or pay arsonists to burn them down, and then ask for protection money.
You do realize that you aren't building cities together you're building cities in the same world. It'd be more along the lines of have taxes soo subsidized that bussinesses will make their head quarters in your city while everyone else gets their tax brackets screwed up.
Edit: though there are lots of connections to other cities like trade ect. trans city roads, ports, air ports. nothing like getting everyone dependant on oil then deciding to just stop exporting at low prices.
The PvP is crafting and the economy.

This looks awesome. What's funny is I was speaking to my brother this afternoon saying they should create an mmorpg that's like Sim City / The Sims. Now, I came across this game looking for an mmorpg to play. Bookmarked and CAN'T WAIT!
Looks very promising, I wonder how interaction with other people will work; perhaps like spore or perhaps you can even trade/fight resources and much more.
Bookmarked as well.
First i've heard of this game and it sounds really cool and will definatley be something I watch out for in the future.
The MMO world is very much in the process of becoming very stale, projects like this are more than welcome.
120% agree.
Im waiting for a Civilizations style MMO, where you build your empire and have to deal with other player empires, via trade, alliances or even go to war with them.
