Nvidia or Ati graphics card ?

I am trying to decide between an Nvidia 9800gtx or an ATI 4850 both with 512mb. I am running either with a Pentium e8400 3gz Wolfdale (hopefully overclocked), with 4gb of ddr3 ram. I am using XP at the minute, i know it will only utilize 3gb of ram but i'm future proofing it for when i might get Vista.I'm intending, hoping that i can play this game maxed out on 1600 x 1050 resolution. Has WAR been utilized for either manufacturer, i know in system requirements they stae that they support both but is there a tilt to one or the other?

I switched to Nvidia mainly because I got tired of getting craptastic drivers from the ATI site.  I shouldn't have to get 3rd party drivers for my video card because the official ones suck so bad.  I haven't had any problems with an Nvidia card yet.

Get the 4850 I haven't heard anyone complain about it yet.

right now the 48XX series is the best bang for the buck .... and probably one of the best cards out too

    4850 definately.

This is coming from a guy that owns a Nvidia card (GTX 260), so no fanboism here.

As to the memory question.  A 32 bit based operating system can't address more than 4gig.  A 64 bit operating system can address over 4gig.   Microsoft varies the upper limit a 64 bit system can read(from 8GB to 128GB) depending on which version of the operating system you buy.

On the video cards either way you will be fine.  The ATI card does run hotter and that probably translates into a noiser system.  And there tend to be more issues with ATI drivers.  If you get a 9800GTX+ it outperforms the 4850.

This is the cheapest 9800 gtx+ I found looking real quick: ($200 and a $30 rebate)

If you would like to be full proof for a while I'd spend the extra cash and get the 9800X2.. You can find it for about 275-300 US or CND. The reason being is it will hold off alot long in the end than a single GPU solution, as games get more power hungry the dual GPU solution will win grounds over the single GPU solutions.  I have an Ati 3850 512mb I am satified it played all the new games at good frame rates ( excluding Crysis but its not that great anyway; it a benchmark/salestool for the engine ) kinda gives you an idea If your budget is low. A 4850 or a 9800 gtx+ will do fine if all games but your paying a little extra for the more rescent Hardware that you'll want to change in less than a year. Both Nvidia and Ati will be switching to 45nm next year then getting DirectX 11 in July /August. That when you want to change again. So what I am saying if you want to go all out go for a 9800X2 if not get an Ati 3870 or 8800 for killer price and they will play WAR with no trouble even on 1920X1200

    Happy shopping.

Id go for the 4850 I have one and its rocks. It did run hot but I did the Fanspeed mod its easy and free.   Im not to sure what the other poster said about ATI's craptastic drivers. I have never ran into any problems with ATI's drivers.  All my games run smooth as hell with great framerates.

Radeon 4850 or 70 i got so many Problems with Nvidia in the last time thats not even funny. Just look what they do with they're broken Chips, they sold them as 8800 GT in the last months before the 9800 series came out and now they are doing it again, with the 9600 series. They think they can do everything and get away with it.

new generation top end Nvidia isnt really worth it imo.. Just about the same in specs and requirements as the previous top ends (which are actually decreasing GREATLY in price).. The only next gen nvidia that I hear is even worth paying attention to is the 9600GT which can be bought SLI (x2) for about the same price as a single 8800GTX and can outperform it (about time 2 vid cards actually DO something useful).. I dont know too much about Ati.. havent really used them since....... damn... since the windows 98 era or something like that,..

QFT. I'm running 2x8800gt G92s in SLI atm, if I were to shop for something new, I'd prob go for 4870 or 4870x2 if I could afford it. Subjectively though, I've had a lot of problems with ATi's drivers but recently nvidia's have started sucking as well. Even so, ATi is currently the clear winner.

From what I have seen over the net, your setup is almost as good as it gets without needing an external power source lol... Thats what I am upgrading to.. only for 200 bucks too :-)

Go with the 48XX series.  Great bang for the buck, and you don't have to worry about the any of the higher than normal failure rates of the recent Nvidia boards.

Cheers :) I'm actually running them passive with 2 Accelero S1's in an Antec P182 (5x120mm fans), really quiet, I'm very satisfied (T caps @65C with fans on 40%). But from what I read nothing beats 4870s, esp x2's. I'm just hoping WAR will run well on an SLI setup.

    >$200 = ATI 4850 / 9800GTX+ if you can find a deal on it.

    <$200 = 9800GX2

    <$400 = 4870X2

Current pricing shows 4870 (single) at about $250-300. 9800GX2 can now be had for $270.

Only problem with the 9800GX2 is cooling if you are in a small room and play games for hours. Other than that the 9800GX2 will trumph the 4870.

Drivers are equally the same. ATI has done a lot of work and it has shown. Those with problems are more isolated than not and shouldn't be taken 100% into consideration as each system is different. WAR will NOT have any performance issues between the 2 for the fact that WAR is not demanding and can be run rather easily.

The much more demanding games are mixed but very close and you should read proffesional reviewers for such details.

Running a 8800gt 512 and have never had to turn down a single graphical setting in any game to get decent fps, runs Crysis perfectly fine.

Seems to me there's really not much out there to push last gens cards, let alone this gens. Might want to save yourself some money and go for some of last gens leaders. Especially if you run a couple of 8800's in sli, still cheaper than the current models.

Now if money isn't an issue, by all means buy the newest and best.

GTX 260 is 10% faster then HD 4870. Its also like 10% more expensive.

48XX series are both wonderful cards and probably won outright this current generation of war of the Graphics cards.

Mind you this is the first time since the old ati 9XXX series to actually come on top of the graphics battle so don't think nvidia is beaten in any form they had the king of cards for like a few years.

But as things stands ATI 48XX is the way to go but heck i just won the geforce 8800 so not complaining at all about nvidia lol

    *edit* sorry broken links:

See benchmarks comparing 4850 against various cards, including 8800gts:

Performance vary depending on the game rendering engine. Overall they're about the same.

Guys my comp spec at the moment:

    core2duo 2.13ghz

    2gig RAM

    vidcard: 7600gtx

Now, i been wondering, should i benefit more if i only upgrade my video card? or  should I also upgrade my processor? because its really useless to upgrade high end video card if ur processor cant handle it right? So wat processor speed would make a good pair for this high end video card(4850, 9800)

I just bought a brand new  PNY 8800GT 512from new egg for like $119. Plenty of power for a game like WAR and most anything else.  EVGA might be a better brand to go with though for another $20.
