2-corp, Good versus Evil server

Someone suggested this idea in some obscure thread somewhere. I don't know how feasible it would be (I obviously don't know how limited the engine is) but it would be a new twist on the game, and certainly a fun one. with two corps, you could have the very cool "uber battles" between giant armadas of people in ships. it would also permit all sorts of players to thrive- stealers, good guys, colony-founders, etc...

Just a thought.

There are of course problems with this idea.

People change their alingment all the time....Go good until they can get a starcruiser, then go evil by laying waste to everything in their path. How wouuld that be handled?

Also, by sideing the server like that...You don't change anything. You can kill everyone in the other corps just like you can in a real game, take their colonies, ectera. You just have a larger corp.

A better implementation of this would be a simple 2 faction server, but that too has it's problems. Side stacking comes to mind....In every game out there(allegiance comes to mind) all the uber players go to one side and the newbs get trashed. So you couldn't let people choose their side. Which would annoy a lot of people.(Get corped with someone you hate for instance)

What would be interesting is if you had a certain amount of time to do whatever you want(go evil or good) but after you go around 1000 rep in a certain direction (-1000 rep evil or 1000 rep good) then you can't switch back or else you get viewed as a traitor or something like that. Then there might be extra starbases to put on both sides of the galaxies. Just my thoughts on the topic.

Xira has a point........... the best players would all be on one side, leaving the other side to be demolished............... but there is a way to balance it out!

    * First off the Admilrals club could'nt be on the server, so everyone could start out on equal footing

*After so many veteran players (decided by what medals you have) sign up on one side, the others have to play on the other side. The only way this would work is if everyone had a safe place to log out.

If you're going of an all out battle server, then more warships would have to be created, leaving the merchant ships off the server, or instead of two factions have three (good, evil and merchants). The merchants guild would only be interrested in trading and selling, working for either side, or both sides.

To do any of this, players on both sides would have to start out in a warship, and there would need to be a better way to earn credits. Nukes would not be sold at any starbase (you'd have to get them from colonies), and warp fuel regen would have to be fast.

And as a added risk, if you get shot down, you lose your artifacts ::::06::

    What do you guys think?

All these ambitious ideas got me to thinking if these could be put in mods instead of the actual game. Btw, I'm no game expert so does anyone know if modding starport is possible to do? And would Playtechtonics make servers for the mods?

I can see the devs jumping all over the chance to dedicate a server to a game they can't possibley make a dime fromimage

Perhaps a better way to approach this would be for each side to have total "supply" of possible purchasble items at the Admiral's Club, meaning that throughought the entire course of the game, only X amount of IG ships, Y amount of Nukes, etc etc would be able to be purchased (the numbers would be pretty high) but once they're out, they cannot be "restocked". Then all the developers would have to do is charge obscenely high rates, and they're making a ton of money right off the bat :)
