My system specs atm
2 gig of ram, 256mb 8600gtg, 1.8ghz dual core, windows xp service pack 2.
Right, I see a lot of people talking about ram and video cards making each other worse, so please explain this information whilst answering this question ( IF you do ^.^):
I just went to a computer store to find out what would be good to do with my pc, the guy suggested another 1 gig, or maybe 2 gigs, making it 3 or 4, but it didnt really matter, which one would be better?
Also, they sell 3 video cards, he reccomended 2 to me, an 8600gtg but with 512 mb memory, and another 8600gt, but with 1 gig of memory, which one of these would be better since people are saying 1 gig on the card makes your ram bad? :S
One more thing, the last card they sell is a 512mb 8800GT, but he said nothing about this, why ? Can I not have one on my system, is it a bad card, isit a worse card??
They dont sell intel processors.
Cheers.

As XP doesn't recognise more than 3 Gb RAM there's no point going with 4Gb and infact, 2Gb will be fine with XP. Forget all 3 of those cards and go with the ATI HD4850, it beats them all hands down - I assume you have a PCIex16 slot for a graphics card.
I'd have to agree go with the HD4850. However, those cards that guy suggested aren't the greatest, and I would not be surprised if he was trying to sell them to you just to get rid of them. If your tight on cash, or really want to buy from that store, go with the 8800GT. As for the RAM, if you are running XP and looking to play WAR, upgrading your memory is not necessary at all. Your specifications are well over good enough to play WAR, however the next upgrade you should make should either be your processor or your graphics card.
indeed.
I have to disagree re 2gig ram. Sure it will prob be fine but xp will benefit from 4gig. The only recognises 3 is true but recognising and using are different issues. 3 would surfice if you are on a budget and ram is as cheap as atm.
Go wit hthe HD4870X2 if not the HD4870 and failing that the HD4850 but for goodnes sake dont buy it from your average high street store.
Remeber in a lot of stores the guy on the counter usually doesnt know his ar$e from his elbow thats why hes working in a pc store.
Caveat Emptor
You dont need more RAM. I have 2 GB of RAM on my Vista SP1 64 bit and I never had any problems in any game.
I suggest buying HD4850 if you are short on bugget, and 8800GT and 8800GTS are good choices but not as good as 4850.
You should also consider GTX 260 and HD4870 if you have few extra bucks.
For all these cards you will need a PCIe x16 slot on your motherboard. If you do not have that slot, and you have AGP slot, then buy ATI HD3850 512 MB card which is a best card for AGP slot.
Id go with a 4850 as well cuz I have one and it rocks........ Just to give you what my setup plays WoW at right now.
C2D 8400 3ghz
ATI 4850
4gb of ram(3.25 recongnized by 32bit XP)
I play WoW max settings and x8 AA and I get over 100 fps in the field and usally about 30 or 40 in crowded areas like Org and such.
Well if i was getting a rigf fopr gaming - vista would be last OS id get right now. Extra ram good - vista bad.
it isnt about having a problem it is about better performance.
Caveat Emptor
first the tip about nvidia cards, all the x200 x300 x600 x700 models ect, rubbish, only the 8800s/9800s ect get the decent parts put on them, the price jumps are rather minimal as well. the thing about ram is yes when you have a huge amount of vid mem your systems mirror it onto the ram so 1 gig vid mem can burn 1 gig of your ram, not sure if thats new with vista or was doing it back with xp too, i havent used xp in like 2 years so i dont recall hehe. both my machines run 4 gigs, i have an 8800 in my desktop and sli 8800 mobiles in my sager notebook that lets me game wherever my silly job makes me wander. both play war maxed out np. your 8600 should be fine for medium settings but ya nvidia screws people over with the non x800 models and ati fucks everyone with no drivers

Vista is a great OS and performance loss of going from XP to Vista is around 5%, or basicly nothing at all.
Also if you like performance, then go Windows 98, its faster then XP and uses less RAM.
If you want gaming Vista is the way for it supports DX10 enhanced graphics.
With all the vista crap like gadgets and Aero and things like that, my memory is at 28% of 2B of RAM. So basicly nothing like all the anti Vista propaganda.
Don't buy into that crap, Vista is a great OS and 3x more stable then XP. I never had a crash or BSOD.
Have you heard about Mojave experiment?
Are you working for linux lol
Im getting the 4850
