Ok, so I was on the Blizzard site today just looking around and I came across this in their job area....

Yep, old news. I don't think Blizzard have tried to hide the fact that they're working on a next gen MMO. There might have even been a press release, I'm not sure.
Hate to burst the bubble, but at BlizzCon they said the new MMO would be a completely new franchise.
Old news indeed, i don't think we will se a new mmo from blizz untill WoW fades away, they should keep this one for bad times.

They never said it would be a new IP.
It would be counter-intuitive for them to start a new IP for a new MMORPG. Do you know how HUGE a universe of Starcraft would be just because of the name recognition. Do you think there is a reason the two games they have announced they are working on are Starcraft2 and Diablo3? It's because the name alone will generate a ton of sales. It's the same reason Bioware is using the KotoR as the IP for their new MMORPG rather than using a new IP.
WOW continues to grow in subscribers (currently 10.9M). I honestly think even if the new MMORPG is 3-4 years away, they still won't directlly compete with their own product at that point. I fully expect the new game to be Universe of Starcraft which will be more like EVE/EnB and will be more pvp/RvR centric than WOW.
I don't have the quote handy, but a blizzard official stated at blizzcom that they were NOT working on a Starcraft MMO, they like the strategy genre Starcraft is in and are not interested in putting it in a MMO environment.
So if you are hoping for a Starcraft MMO, it is not going to be in the near future, it is not the MMO they are working on now.
Don't take everything the developpers say in 2008 for granted imo. As long as its not officially announced by Blizzard, there is a probability.
Fact is, Blizzard is smart enough not to make a WOW2 because they know the players would rather stick with the old Ip than venture on the new one (see EverQuest 1 and 2 for reference)
Also, they can't make a Diablo MMO because most of the system has been ripped of for WoW (classes, skill-tree), and it would not to do make another Fantasy MMo while you have a successful one active.
So of course the logical choice is Stracraft.
Yet there is indeed the pôssibility of a new IP which would also be a logiical choice; after all, Blizz has been running the same 3 IP for 14 years now, and maybe they want a bit of a change.
One thing is sure: it will be a Futuristic MMO; so we all expect starcrfat because they already have a universe to work with instead of creating something from scratch.

January 22, 2007 - In an interview with Empire magazine, Blizzard's Vice President of Development Itzik Ben Bassat spoke about the company's next MMO. Don't expect a clone of World of Warcraft or anything too similar to what Blizzard has done in the past.
"When we announce our next MMORPG," Bassat told Empire, "it's not going to be another WoW. We're not a company that tends to tread the same ground. It'll be something innovative and new that really brings entertainment to another level." At the Burning Crusade launch event in London, Bassat mentioned that the next StarCraft title will be released sooner, rather than later.
Could the next MMO feature another popular Blizzard property? Speaking to IGN last year, Blizzard COO Paul Sams spoke on the potential of new StarCraft and Diablo titles. "There is no doubt that we will continue the StarCraft and Diablo franchise, and trust me, I will be the happiest person in the world when we announce StarCraft 2."
I'm still waiting for the proof that Blizzard's next MMO will not be set in the Star Craft universe.
Not to be a dick but if anyone has proof about this it would be of interest to me.
I read this quote a long time ago and I am quietly optimistic. There is no doubt that Blizzard knows how to make fun and polished games, but WoW is not my cup of tea.
I'm hoping for a Sci-Fi themed, PvP-centric, MMOFPS. More like a dream but oh well.
I'd love to see a Diablo MMO but D3 will do just fine.

I'm looking for a good FFA PvP game. I like WoW and am currently playing it, but I prefer open world FFA PvP.

Damn, I wanted to say months behind but a lot of people beat me to it.
Anyways, I thought for long time that it would be cool if it was warcraft 4, but I am hoping it is actually a next gen mmorpg.
dude put the link, never heard of blizz anouncing anything at the Blizzcon nor in July, the only comment that was made officially in July 1st 2008 is that new MMo is in the works, and one blizz executive said that eventually we will most likely have a new IP.
There is no confirmation on new mmo, and no denial that its not based on Starcraft, which make the most sense by far for it to be Starcraft.
Diablo mmo would simply compete with wow due to its fatasy setting plus it would be mature(17+) and not many people wanna fight in hell in 3D (never liked doom games myself).
So time will tell.
A head of time, to all the nay sayers to Starcraft MMO, I just have to say 'KOTOR MMO has been confirmed :P
oops did not see that, well as I said in my above post, that does not deny Starcraft MMO nor does it confirm a new IP.
