I love the "open endedness' of some mmo's.What i hate is the cookie cutter feel of so many being produced. What i REALLY hate is the marketing of these games.SWG is the front runner on that one.But dont you just know that there are 2 in particular that will just be dissapointments?
Im not naming these 2 games but atm they are 2 that everyone seems to be talking about.
Want to ENJOY an mmo?
Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.
MMORPG's are my favorite gaming past-time. RPG's used to be my favorite but honestly I can't thing of a single rpg title that compares with a good MMORPG for fun and longevity. Ahh good MMORPG....thats the rub and admittedly very subjective as to what constitutes a good MMORPG. There has been some real growing pains in this class of game. Many who saw the potential of the opportunity to make huge amounts of steady cash streaming in monthly rushed into development. It's a hard beast to tame that is to make a game that has the right balance of interaction, gameplay, and staying power. There's the graphical engine to consider, the world design and layout , the specifics as to sci-fi, fantasy, war and what ever other creative worlds can be imagined. There's the customer service aspects, the servers, the bandwith, billing, and a team dedicated to progressing the game after launch. There is the testing in house,, then eventually the beta where the thing really starts to take shape. Just take a look at the boneyard of projects that have had the plug yanked out after months and years of development sweat. Some of the recent launches have been less than stellar and the developer's have felt the heat. Gamers won't keep paying monthly fees for crappy launches and all that blood sweat n tears are all for naught. SWG by SOE is a good example of a title that had the name to make it an instant success.....for a bit at least. You need more than a good name to engage the community long term. Another example is Horizons. I beta tested Horizons and saw it hollowness. I was disheartened when they decided to release it in such an unfinished state. In no way was I interested in paying to play this game. At it's core..the client there were problems. When you have a client problem your in deep doo doo. Dragon Realms pulled the plug because they saw serious flaws in the client. Painfull but I commend them for not trying to hoist it out the door and pay the piper later. Both of these titles had some very good ideas, bringing that to a playable, sucessfull launch is easier thought than done. There are some who seem to think that paying monthly to play a MMORPG is not worthwhile. I disagree with that sentiment as I feel a good MMORPG is an entertainment value unmatched by any other kind of PC gaming pursuit. Having over 4yrs of gameplay for one title...AC1 I found it to hold my interest enough that I bought maybe 3 or 4 other games in that period of time, and none of them held my interest for more than a few weeks at best.. If it weren't for my involvement in AC I could easily see my buying 10-15 games a year in pursuit of my gaming fix. At the prices of newly released games you can see how $10-$15 a month isn't a bad value at all. There are many who have similiar experiences with other MMORPG's such as EQ, AO, DAOC, and others. I am really looking foward to WOW in the near future, it looks like a lot of fun to me. I hope to be engaged for many many moons...................we'll see.
