So here we are..Darkfall 2008

daylight01daylight01 Member Posts: 2,250

Before I start (or indeed the flamer's start) I have followed Darkfall for 8 years and still hope it will be want I(we)want.

So after so long this game still crop's up,I have followed it for a long time now and cant help but wonder if I am following this game now or just the idea..

I would love to play a sandbox title and DF alway's(and in some ways still does)but after soooo long in devolpment does it still fit the bill?....I think not tbh.

Not that the idea still isnt there but after so many year's I hear all DF fans scream "eat your words DF is here"

Well where is it?  After 8 years we have an ingame demo of around 10 mins and a promise of closed beta(chuckle)

So 8 years and a 10 min in game foutage later....what do we have again?..yeah we have what was promised every year for the last 8 year's.

I will still hope for DF but my doubt's grow more and more everyday and given the 8 year span I have but given up,this game could still be great but since the idea the industry has moved on and I dont think DF has.I guess we will wait and see but I think yet another game(if ever released)so near but yet so far,or indeed so much but way to late.

If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

17min video to be a nit, but I definitely understand where you are comming from.

I have been following casually since 2003, but I have been told I have the patience of a saint so it has never really bothered me.

If DF doesn't come through, you do have games like Mortal Online that are promoting the same things as DF.  Earthrise is there too for ya.

I really can't imagine beta not happening this time, it just would not make any sense.  We have seen too many third party statements regarding the timeline of DF to really think that this thing isnt going to happen now.   We are all a little spoiled from how past MMO companies have given us info, so we forget that Aventurine is a small indy house and we cant expect them to market the same way while tryin to develop.  Also people forget that they dont owe us anything, just because other companies act differently (and fail sometimes for doing it)

"The monsters are tough. I was looking for a challenge, but these things are just too damn smart." -DF Beta Tester

"If people were dismissing it, then they wouldn't be talking about it. The well-meaning gamers root for efforts that try to raise the bar. So who's left? It's so easy being a skeptic." -Tasos

I agree that a lot of people are primarily fans of the "idea" of Darkfall, but lets face it, it is a still an amazing idea and there's nothing on the horizon to fulfill it except this game.

Not giving any information to fans has nothing to with a company being indy or not.  We haven't been spoiled; we have been treated right.  If I am a fan from a game, I want news every now and then.  If you promise updates each Friday, then I want to see updates each Friday.  IT's not "oweing" (spelled incorreclty) me something, it's actually caring about the community (especially if they have been following the game for so long).

If a game is in early development, then fine, I can be patient.  If a game only announces major updates, then fine, I can be patient.  If you are less than a year from release and promise beme Friday updates, then I expect updates every Friday.  I believe players should be treated well and rewarded (through new info/news articles) if they are fans (especially the longtime fans).

Not giving promised news has nothing to do with PR, it just shows they don't care enough to do it.

P.S.  No game fails because they give too much news....PR?  mabye.  News?  No.

Cant wait to play this game, hope it will be as good as it seems.

  • daylight01daylight01 Member Posts: 2,250

Well tbh I think my and alot of mmo player's jumped out of there skin when they heard of DF..come on you know you did.

The simple fact is after so many year's and next to no info it does detract from the release.

I tend to find it is people who are just finding this game for the 1st time that are excited(pretty much the same way we were)

If this game does do a closed beta and starts to give more information I will too...maybe get excited again, until then I will be in the "ohh yeah darkfall I remeber that idea"

They have to be running out of money at this point. So the game will probably be released soon. The only question is what kind of shape it will be in.

So you could have just said you think it is vaporware and it won't release right ? And you got the 8 year dev cycle in as well always a good point of contention.

Another pointless piece of text with no backing evidence and sweeping statements.

IF DFO Features do not fit the Bill , tell me of an MMO on the market today that delivers because I don't see one so it still has what it takes. A few quotes around all these broken promises please as delaying something in a development cycle which we all know it is in, is a different matter.

Sorry I hate to mock but ...LOL

You cant use the "ohh we ran out of cash" on this title..

They have never had backing and if the cash was the problem it would have been released year's ago.

People have gave them the time basically as they were a small company and wanted to do it "there way"

so after 8 years the "ohh we have no cash" wont work.

Did I say it was vaporware?

You are just the type opf poster I addressed when I said(The flamer's start)

You guys seem to think everyone should agree with your view's on a public forum.

Anyway I do hope that DF release's and it is everything I hope for but I really doubt it,we will see.

Next time you are bored maybe try to post something useful to the topic instead of the "I am right you are wrong"

whoever is backing them will eventually run out of patience. So yes they have to release soon. You think someone would just give them money forever?  You aren't making any sense.

well if they have a company that have backed them from day 1 then they have been very patient.

I cant think of 1 single company(in game's or otherwise) that has been backed for 8 year's with no reward and still gave them cash after cash with no product,I mean if they had publisher's that were making money on the name I can understand, but that is not the case here.

What dont you understand from buisness? they are all here to make money not friends,so again ..What dont you understand?

There is absolutly no reason to believe this.  No statements from devs or anything to support the idea that they are out of money.

But i agree, also no indication of what shape it is in.  We'll see in a few months with beta.

Quote from Tasos before the video was released (with the highlighter part kind of on topic of this thread):

    ----------------------------------------------------------

    "Hello,

I thought to quickly check in before too much more time passes. As we step up publishing activities, the updates should increase in frequency and quality, which should make up for the ones we’ve been missing the last months. We take for granted sometimes that the Darkfall community is savvy enough to understand the limitations of independent game development and make allowances, however we’re also keeping track of what we need to give you in order for you to know exactly what you’re getting into with Darkfall.

On progress, there are no major problems to report, some minor delays maybe here and there which don’t affect our timeline. Most of us had a short break, the last for a long time. Everyone is back and we officially entered into our crunch period on Monday. We’ve had several new people join the company the past month, and more on the way.

There's a video coming out, most probably next week, or shortly after. We’re talking about a long 100% in-game pure gameplay trailer with no scripting, no simulation, no post-processing. It’s us play-testing while fraps is running on free cameras and playercams and all the footage was collected and edited. The scenarios for it had to be run as part of our testing and development schedule as they came up. Nothing is scripted. We wanted to give you something that can put you in the true spirit of the game and this requires us to be actually playing the game like you would be, and not just taking you on a sightseeing tour or have a company make a marketing cinematic trailer for us.

If you're experiencing problems with the website and the forums it's because these days we're upgrading our webservers and this should be going on most of next week as well. Thank you for your patience.

Our next update would be the video, so until then, thanks for reading"

     ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Basically the point im trying to make is that he sounds pretty sincere and acknowledges the community.  More importantly this quote was taken before the video was released.

People on this forum PROMISED that since Tasos left room for the video to be delayed by saying "or soon after", that the video wouldnt come out till september, or never!  It was the same thing with the official forums.  And what happened?  They stayed up to midnight in Greece to get this video out to us as promised.

People are bitter and just looking to pick fights, but the image i see is a group of indy developers working hard on developing a game that they want to give to the community; gamers developing for gamers.  So I see them really excited to be able to show everyone what they have been working so hard on.  So the stick around and get this 17min display of their hard work out to us, and instead of appreciating it we make stupid comments like "omg eq1 graphics fail".  Not even thinking to be appreciative of them making the effort to develop a game for our enjoyment.  Yes they will get $ if it goes off well, but you get my point.

I hear stories of how they didn't receive news in four months (years ago).  Players waited weeks for Friday updates...that's NOT acknowledging the community.
People on this forum PROMISED that since Tasos left room for the video to be delayed by saying "or soon after", that the video wouldnt come out till september, or never!  It was the same thing with the official forums.  And what happened?  They stayed up to midnight in Greece to get this video out to us as promised.
Considering the movie was being discussed in May, I honestly don't see it as a big deal that they had one late night in the office.  It's a good thing to do, but seriously, it was around 3 MONTHS that players waited...

DF didnt owe us anything, and still dont until we are paying them.  And no he wasnt calling the community stupid obviously.

(I must be bored replying to this trash)

Did I say it was vaporware?

You are just the type opf poster I addressed when I said(The flamer's start)

You guys seem to think everyone should agree with your view's on a public forum.

Anyway I do hope that DF release's and it is everything I hope for but I really doubt it,we will see.

Next time you are bored maybe try to post something useful to the topic instead of the "I am right you are wrong"

Sorry for being a bit rude but what topic?

    Have a nice one

So after so long this game still crop's up,I have followed it for a long time now and cant help but wonder if I am following this game now or just the idea..
I would love to play a sandbox title and DF alway's(and in some ways still does)but after soooo long in devolpment does it still fit the bill?....I think not tbh.

There is absolutly no reason to believe this.  No statements from devs or anything to support the idea that they are out of money.

they just took a 20 or 30 million dollar loan out  with AV a few weeks ago for distribution purposes

Funny how they have $20-$30 million dollars in loans 6 months+ ago, ( which turned out to merely be convertible bonds ), now AV gives them $20-$30 million dollar loans, etc.

You'd almost have to believe that investors and financial departments only give out money in $20-$30 million chunks.

    Amazing.

well considering this was in a financial press release for AV it is true since they are a public stock company and have to report financial transactions like this

Wasn't really disputing it, just struck me as odd is all.
