Well the people I am still in touch with from my SB guild (about 20 people) all felt that the video was a huge let down, me included. Also a lot of my friends that knew nothing about DF thought the trailer was not very impressive.
We have no way of knowing what the vast majority of people who saw the video actually thought of it. I have my sources. Guildmates, friends. You have your sources. DF fansites.
Also, I said that Adventurine did not care about their fans based on your comment "DF devs dont need to prove anything. the game will speak for itself"
This is just bad PR.
One opinion we do share is that we both hope the game will live up to it's hype. I really hope it will be at last as good as UO was in the old days.
I appologize for not sharing your same optimistic outlook on the future of DF.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
"The monsters are tough. I was looking for a challenge, but these things are just too damn smart." -DF Beta Tester
"If people were dismissing it, then they wouldn't be talking about it. The well-meaning gamers root for efforts that try to raise the bar. So who's left? It's so easy being a skeptic." -Tasos
You're wrong again.... AoC did not turn an army of fans into haters. AoC turned an army of fresh faces who were in neither court into haters by producing garbage. They then BEGAN turning fans into haters by doing absolutely nothing to fix actual issues with the game. We aren't talking opinion stuff here...this isn't subjective material. This isn't like someone hating EVE because EVE is what it is. AoC has its hate earned for not even producing something which was passable in this genre under the current crop of standards. Hell...if anything, the whole AoC debacle is a GREAT example of why you SHOULD act like you owe your fans something. Had they actually cared enough to deliver unto their fans what they advertised they would, and treated these fans like people who gave to shits about them, they wouldn't have the problems they have today. MMO gaming is a service industry...and all service industries owe their supporters EVERYTHING. It doesn't matter whether the support is financial or verbal, both equal success to the easily swayed public. They "owe" their fans everything they have right now. Unlike other MMO companies, whom actually spend both a ton of money AND time on PR and advertising, Darkfall has nothing to spread word about them but us. We ARE the PR section of that company. They have nothing else. Frankly...they should probably send a bloody check to each member of their forums for the free work. I'll be kind, though, and just expect some very basic and common returns like any other MMO company would give.
As to what you are saying with the 3rd paragraph, I am not sure whether you are referring to Aoc or Darkfall, but if you are talking about Darkfall, you say the 'problems they have today'. What problems? The fact that there are viral marketers and pissed off vaportrolls on public internet boards moaning about the 'lack of game info' ? That's hardly a problem I think, this is pretty standard material being thrown at game releases new and old, regardless of what info they chose to release.
You were right, I was referring to AoC. Which, kinda sucks...because this was the biggest paragraph and now I'm just adding words to the reply so that it gets a fair reply to match it. I fail, in this case lol.
Also, I would take most of the views in the official forums as representative of what the 'real' fans feel about Darkfall, and they don't look anything like this forum at all. I mean I saw a couple of vapour hate posts there, but there is nowhere near the amount of trolling and mockery that goes on in this place.
I do not actually think the "fans" believe they are owed anything. I think that such a stance is pretty dumb...but then, its not my place to dictate how everyone is supposed to feel. On the flip side, it doesn't actually matter whether they believe they are owed something or not...they are, and I'll detail it below.
And again, unless you have given them any money at all in any form, I don't think they 'owe' you anything.
If this were any other game, I'd agree. Of course, any other game would probably have a PR division and be releasing info like it was the cure for cancer right now. They don't, they aren't, and they pretty much have relied on the community to do all of their dirty work for, basically, all of 7 years now. Yeah, they owe you guys something. In a perfect world where electric bills come to you pre-paid and printed on delicious waffles...you'd be owed some money for the effort. In THIS world, you were at least owed the video you got and then some more.
A "thank you" would be right in line too.
Cheers.
You'd better be giving me a cheers with something stout. Like this evil peach schnapps I found...bloody thing was 99 proof. Made my head spin, thats more than most regular hard liquor. Ironically, using it in hooch ALSO made my head spin, both in more delightful and less delightful ways.
There you go! I even made everything all colorful and pretty, just for kicks. I was gonna color code my reply to you too...but then realized how stupid that was. I can be dumb too.
Originally posted by imbant 1) The hype for DF is huge, thats just a given. its feature list is so extravagent that almost every single pvp guild out there has it on their radar. Doesnt matter if they think it will release, or if it will have all its features, only that if it does, they will be watching it like a hawk. The only given is that this is your opinion, which you are entitled to. My opinion is that the hype for the game is not nearly as big as you think it is. Not that it matters, because once the game is released is when the true test of success starts, not the hype it generates beforehand. 2) DF devs dont need to prove anything. the game will speak for itself, and thats a quote from them, not my opinion. if the game releases well, it will take care of itself. just because some people dont understand how the business world works, doesnt mean they need to jump over fences just to prove themselves to people who just want to bash anythin they dont understand. A game company that does not care about it's fanbase will most likely not succeed in the long run. What I mean is that for people who have been following the game for 5-7 years the 17 minute video was like a slap in the face. No new information what-so-ever. DF is going to have to be one hell of a game to make up for how crappy Adventurine's PR is. 3) lol at not knowing anything about how the game has been tested and thinking that how past games have done their beta means anything. that is just delusional. Is the game 100% finished...no...but it is at the point where it can be released after a public beta. I guess we will see who is right soon....but the "out of money" arguement is just not substantial, sorry but thats not even up for debate as there is no proof about it. In fact i think someone stated in this thread that AV just took out another loan and the long development cycle should tell you that they arent afraid of taking as long as it takes. I never said I agreed with the "out of money" argument, I just said it held more water then saying the game is finished. If they have some top secret testing method that allows them to test 10,000s of different computer setups connecting from across the world simultaneously to their servers I believe that secret would make them more money then the actual game ever would. Your opinion is that the game is almost ready, my opinion is that the game is far from ready and there is no way they are going to be able to release in 2008 unless they release a buggy unfinished product. My opinion is based on previous MMO game beta testing/release experience, what is your opinion based on?
Wow. If you really think that those of us who have been following the game for 7 years felt this 17min was a slap in the face, you are really far off. Which would explain your opinion about the hype about the game.
Also, DF developers care about their fans...and the fans with half a brain know this. People are spoiled by other mmo hype machines and make the common mistake that lack of updates = not caring. Fact is they are an indy developer and their main focus is on the development of the game. They are gamers making games for gamers and the fans know this.
Im all for opinions...but for you to think that the fans thought the video was a slap in the face is just ridiculous. The vast majority thought it was "OMG" amazing and were beyond satisfied. Maybe thats because the fans knew what the video was meant to be, and that it delivered.
But you are entitled to your opinions...
I mean no offense when I say this. But Darkfall fans constantly put a nice PR spin on any potentially negative aspect of DF.
Its not that theyre shady and dont release much info, its that theyre not over hyping it.
its not that they postpone their game over and over due to incompetance, they do it because they want to release a polished product.
The list goes on and on, DF has a strange cult following.
There you go! I even made everything all colorful and pretty, just for kicks. I was gonna color code my reply to you too...but then realized how stupid that was. I can be dumb too.
Hehe, I am sure they will not forget their many thanks to the fans when the game goes live, taken in consideration their stance, I believe that's a given (although it may be not, who knows in this industry )
I personally dont think Darkfall is going to be much of a success. I think it had its opportunity but it missed it by a long shot. Now it just looks outdated and although the idea is still there I just get the impression from watching the video that technically it just isnt up to scratch. I just dont see how it is going to be able to make such a drastic improvement before it gets released......thats assuming it doesnt get pushed back yet again.
I just read up about Mortal Online for the first time and that gives the impression of being much more interesting.
Theres just too many 3rd party statements that have invested in this game. The question isn't "will darkfall release" rather its, will darkfall deliver what it promised?
I believe that darkfall will be a great game and if it has been under development for 8years it has to be good. In my opion the beta has to come out soon because the Darkfall deveolopers dont want to make their fans angry when they dont release the beta. On the other hand the reason they havwe waited so long is that they dont want the game to not be good and push people away from it. Sp o believie that the beta will be soon but not too soon
I dont want to upset or attack you but I am thinking you have just found this game after this comment..
"the beta has to come out soon because the Darkfall deveolopers dont want to make their fans angry"
Follower's of the game fanbio or hater will know what I mean.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

Yea but bad PR does not mean they dont CARE about their fans. It just means they have not had the resources or manpower to conduct a lot of marketing.

Can't wait for this game!
the vid was staged alot of places so it only impressed me with that many of people on screen.
and the sheer thought of what can be done
