I was eagerly waiting to sneak peaks and wondering why I never got my invite. Then I went and checked my Mythic account. Apparently, when I signed up for DAoC a century ago I never changed my email account to my new address. I had been being invited all along. Grrrrr.....
So, all's cool now. I finally got to start playing today. And I like it. I'm having fun.
I've just got one question though. If this is a dumb question then forgive me, I'm not the computer genius of the world or anything. Do they have all the lighting effects turned on right now? I'm just wondering, because it seems like they could have done a lot more with those. The effects in DAoC as far as lighting goes look better to me.
I know it's beta still, so I figure that is the case, I just wanted to hear it for sure so I can breathe a sigh of relief.
Other than that, the gameplay is fun fun fun. And I'm sure after release it will just get better. This game has a lot of room to make so big waves in the market. Time will mature it to a great game, just like DAoC is.

Okay. It just seems like everything is kind of dull. I don't know how to explain it. Like there is not light sources or anything casting shadows on the surfaces like the ground and stuff. Everything just seems flat and matted looking. I guess I'm talking about textures, but I'm not sure. Maybe that's the word.

Like the opening screen where you pick your character you made and click "play", that screen graphic looks super good. But then in game it just doesn't show all those blended colors and shading and textures and stuff. That's what I'm talking about.
Are they putting those things in later?
I checked all my settings and everything is pegged on highest.

If you go into your graphics card control panel you can customize the graphics a bit for WAR and it will improve things. Generally speaking everything will be set to application controlled and WAR will default a lot of them to lower settings so you have to force them to higher settings. I have no clue if doing this makes them release state though, I'm pretty sure they don't have all of the graphical sliders in yet.
Exactly! This is what I have been thinking for a couple months now. This game is SO good. If they would just add world shadows (cast from hills and trees) to give it a bit of mood, then nothing would stop this game. As they stand now though, it looks a bit cheap. Im not saying the graphics themselves are bad. on the contrary, I like them. But the lighting and shadowing is almost non existant. Yes, I can see a shadow on my character, but nothing else in the world seems to cast them.
Again, this game is bordering on great. Just take that last step and make the world look great.
Please tell me this isn't one more 2008 game running on a crappy old 2004 game engine...

No. On the contrary, I am using a 9800 on one computer and an 88oo on the other. both 512m, both computers highend dual core. Please tell me what you have done to make them better than "High Quality." I wont follow up your smartass comment with my own, but instead would like to engage you in understanding why you see the world differently than I.

WTF
Are you sure you are replying to the right person? Because my question has nothing to do with your answer. I still haven't played the game and reading what you said I am worried...
Again , reading what you said it seems that "this is one more 2008 game running on a crappy 2004 game engine with no object shadows, etc...". Can anyone confirm this?
edit: reading you a gain its seems you don't understand what a game engine is. A game engine is not a graphic card....
Alright, I think it may have been just the initial character that I made and his starting area.
I made a White Lion at first and went through this starting zone. Just now I made a Squig Herder though, and I must say his starting area is 100 times better. I can totally see the lighting effects. For instance when I stand by a torch, you can see the light on my character, on the ground, and on the buildings and stuff. That is what I was looking for. I like the glow of a warm fire on the environment. lol.
Okay, maybe they just need to do some work with a couple of the zone then. That's fine. I understand that totally. It's still a couple weeks till release and even then it's a young game with tons of potential. The gameplay is really what matters most right now and that, to me, kicks butt.
BTW, I like the Squig Herder, he's cute. Funny little guy.

My fault. For some reason I read "2004 computer" meaning mine. I was wrong to snip back at you. If I were guessing, this is definately a new version of the old DAOC engine. Im sure there are many improvements and modifications made to it, but the graphics engine and shadowing piece doesnt appear to be "current."
BUT, that isnt to say that this is a bad game. Dont judge this game (nor any other) solely on the graphics. They definately play a part, but only a part. The gameplay is huge also. And in that category, I think this game delivers.
The elf pairing was the last to go in the game and probably isn't quite as polished as the rest. I guess I never really noticed the difference but that is probably what you are seeing.
This is a good point. I have been playing DE's for most my time in game. The DE/HE area seems not done (with shadowing). But if other areas are better ramped up for that, then maybe there is hope for the DE/HE area.
This might also explain why some people seem to have our issues, and others cant see what the heck were talking about and think things look perfect.
Okie thx , I'll see for myself when OB starts tomorrow.
I would bet money it is. Because the difference is tremendous. I checked out the starting zone for Bright Wizards as well, and it's as kick butt as the Squig Herders.
Okay, I can't wait until the whole game comes out. I like that I get a chance to try out all the classes early on so I can get a feel for them. That way when the game comes out I'll feel confident in my choice and not be an alt-aholic like I am in some other games.
Although, I feel it will be the same scenario. I see another class do something cool and shiny and then I wants it sooooos bad. hehehehe
