Yeah. As long as I'm having fun with enough people in WAR, then WoW could get 20 million subs for all I care

I bet your stoked.  There's a lot of buzz, previews seem positive, there's some nice reviews coming out of beta.  An emphasis on PvP, man that's the novel twist we need for a MMORPG.   Maybe you should book a few days off work to get a head start.  What could possibly go wrong?

See here, I've got this collection of concrete bricks.  I've etched into them the names of the MMORPGs that have caused this endless cycle of "oh I wonder how many are going to leave WoW for this game".  With these bricks I shall smash you across your face until you start realizing that your game is not unique and beautiful, I've played the beta, and it's a boring pile of shit.
The combat feels like I'm playing a turn based strategy game, via e-mail.   The game itself is a soulless mess, no love has gone into creating the game, it feels like it's been outsourced to 5 different companies and been stitched together in an appauling mess of boredom.
I can smell your disagreement from across the internet, but do you really think you're the first to be swooned over by a new game?  You're living in a self-reinforced delusion.  Here's a wakeup call:

Dungeons and fucking dragons people.  One big argument for WAR 'hurting' WoW seems to be based on IPs being superior to each other.  Here's a newsflash, WAR, while being older than Warcraft, is now considerably less cooler than WoW, lore wise, IP wise, word-on-the-street-wise, Slashdot-wise, however the fuck you want to rate nerdy-coolness-wise.  WAR has been left behind in the dust.

Shut the hell up.  In the remote chance that they will somehow give WAR the kiss of life, probably by including a copy of WOTLK with it, and the game manages to turn out to be OK, which is what everyone always thinks about games after they've totally failed to be blown away by the dull beta, then we will play it.
Yes imagine that.  But if someone actually manages to make an MMORPG that is better than WoW, then there's no psychic bonds tying us to that game.  I would be overjoyed to play something better than WoW, just like I would be overjoyed to find something more enjoyable than sex, which as you can probably tell from this rant hasn't happened for a while.

i may not agree with anything you said but it sure as hell was fun to read Recant for president!

Yup same here not agreeing with all that was said but it did put a big smile on my face when reading, thanks for that very entertaining post.......but for president.....nah I rather agree on more things for someone to become a president. But good laugh never the less

I dunno, I knew Vanguard wouldn't do too great.  I was excited for AoC until I saw their videos.  I knew the game wouldn't be too great when I saw thier "seige" videos.  It was a bunch of NPCs in a fake siege.  The combat also looked amazingly dull.  The thing is, I liked a bunch of  the RvR videos of WAR that I saw.  I also had a ton of fun playing in closed beta.  I can't say I'm 100% sure WAR will be a success, but from what I've seen so far it looks like it will be.  It won't be as big as WoW, though, that's for sure.

Will WoW's pop decrease?  Probably not that much.  Remember, most WoW PvPers are really PvEers.  That's how it's always been and how it will stay, especially if WAR is a success.

    Nice post Recant...

To the guy wanting a challenge out of WAR...forget about it on the PvE end.  Its just as easy to play as WOW.  The ONLY challenge is in PvP when you're outnumbered, but in those cases its hopeless, so I wouldn't call that a challenge.

If you didn't feel "challenged" in WOW, because you didn't bother trying to challenge yourself, you won't be challenged in WAR either.  You can solo to max level, avoid all dungeons and PvP and make the game extremely easy.  Even in PvP you can run along with the zerg, hang in the back if you choose or do very little in their "battlegrounds",  I mean scenarios, and still benefit.  Of course you can also lead a guild & do the dungeons, lead the RvR raids, so you can make the game difficult.  But YOU have to do it.  The game itself is only as hard as you make it...JUST LIKE WOW.

I think you guys missed the part about WAR not trying to be a revolutionary game.

I'll be playing WAR because it's fun for me.

not sure about topic of post, if 4 men are on a bus playing Wow and when the bus stops one gets off then that leaves 3 on the bus playing Wow...  surely thats common sense?

    So...how did you vote?

Of course WAR will cause a population hit in WoW.  AoC did and it was a giant collection of bugs with some game and some nipple thrown in.

With WAR hitting before WotLK, it will have a solid impact on WoW's numbers (although WoW's numbers will continue to rise based solely on expansion into new territories, i.e. Latin America).  Whether it will RETAIN those subscribers is entirely dependent on how the endgame stacks up.  The early levels that have been previewed show a strong, polished product, so WAR may be able to keep more of its crowd than Conan has.

  • TheocritusTheocritus Member LegendaryPosts: 10,020

I think WAR will get about 10% of WoWs US/EU subscriptions (500K) and the rest will come form other games or returning vets of games like DAoC.......I think they'll sell a million boxes easily and reatin a fairly high percentage of those (much higher than AoC)........My biggest question is if RVR is what so many people wanted why wasn't DAoC a bigger success??

    Bravo, bravo! More, more!

Seriously though, very nicely said. WoW is the biggest MMO everything is gauged against it.

My observation is that Warhammer will get some PvPers from WoW, get fairly large initial numbers (maybe 500 k) initially and then go into a steady decline joining the tier with with the likes of EQ II, LOTRO, CoH etc. Quite simply, and measuring with the number of PvE first games, I doubt there are millions PvP/RvR oriented players to sustain the game as Warhammer. It is, in essence, a niche game and as such it will at beast leave few faint marks on WoWs population.

I've never played WoW and I prolly won't play WAR right outta the gate. I'm currently playing EvE online while I wait for that most anticipated title... Darkfall!

Now if I had to choose which one I'd like to play the most I'd have to say WAR over WoW. Chaos RULES!! I'd also be willing to bet that there are a huge number of Warhammer fans out there who will flock to WAR. I dunno how many of them playing WoW right now but they're playing something... that something is going to get a lot less populated when WAR goes gold. It definitely has potential but I'ma wait in the wings for a bit before I decide whether or not to join in that carnage.

You don't have "never played WoW and start WAR" as an option.  Or is this a poll just for WoW players?

  • nomadiannomadian Member Posts: 3,490

WOLTK puts a bit of spanner in WAR's works by introducing siege in the expansion. WAR will have to be good to compete with that for many people. I personally might give WAR a try being pvp-focused and me being fed up of my recent experiences of WoW being barren in the low level ranges, BGs being full of twinks and PvE about as entertaining as a slug. Not to mention the channels full of spamming kids.(not that WAR will likely be any different on that front)

I quit wow for good reasons it was so nit picky that even if you meet people youd have to sift through 20 peopel before you found a decent person that you liked.  For me War is what I want pvp pve and hoping clases that are not so over powered that the ninja, warlock are kings or shaman type classes. 70 druid was a joke in the end not matter how you look at it.

This thread originally posted in WOW General section. Its target was to get the opinions from WOW players about what they will do with WAR.

But someone thinks was better to transfer this thread to pub section.

I think WAR will definately effect WoW's server population.

I presume almost all of the consensual soft-core instanced PvP fans will stop WoW for WAR. When 'Wrath' launches, I'm pretty sure probably only about 10% will leave WAR to go back to that garbage. Blizzard already have plans for server merge programs.
