Guilds and their maturity level.

All games that I apply for in any mmorgps, I usually get turned down because I am 14. I do not see why this is such a big deal, I think guilds need to judge the players maturity by how they talk, and how they play, not by the age. I know that I am more mature then most kids my age, and even some adults. All guilds I do get into are immature little kids playing. I have played over 5 mmorpgs, but that seems not to matter in guilds. Anyone have a guild for eq2 that will not care so much about my age? Thnx.

We dont have a age restriction just that you can act mature and respectable

I dont think that age plays a huge difference when it comes to video game maturity. Just look at 30+ year olds, if they are still playing video games, they still are kinda just big kids. Either way, its always more important to have fun then have a strict old guy rule. As long as you don't troll and cause trouble, I have no problem with younger than 16.

I am 30 and I have seen older people act like 12 year olds and I have seen 12 year olds act like 30 year olds.

    Very interesting to see.

However, I dont think I could ever submit to a guild leader who is 16 and under.  I tend to enjoy guildleaders with some hard core life experiences behind their belts.

Us 30 somethings may be big kids because we play, but its just another avenue of entertainment, and on the whole olders players tend to be more friendly, helpful, but on the flip side, while not exactly acting immature we can be sarcastic.

    This is an observation only

Personally I dislike age restrictions. I've meet a lot people in game that up there in age that act very immature or just like jerks in general and younger aged players that are just fine. I ended up thinking they were older then what they were. I had given the same impression to people I played with when I first started with mmorpgs myself. People tended to think I was older then I really was but then either high school was brought up or saying I was entering college that they got my true age and it alway surprised them. That right there teaches peopel that age isn't everything. So I never have age as a requirement when it comes to inviting people to guilds if I'm an officer.

age doesnt mean as much as it should when it comes to maturity anymore...

some of the most immature people i've met online were in their 20's and even 30's...

some of the most mature people i've met online are my age (18) if not even younger...

if the guy's mature, he's mature... dont take age into account... just because he's legally an "adult" doesnt mean he acts like one...

i must say though, age still does play a huge part in maturity... its not 100%, but you are still WAY more likely to find a mature 20yo then a mature 13yo... i can understand some clans still having age restrictions, and i wont hold it against them for doing so (lucky for me, i can usually meet this restriction now ^^)

I agree that age does not really matter. Were I you, I'd start your own guild and keep ages out of it.

I'm in a clan that has an age restriction, but we don't really pay attention to it for people we really like... Maybe you're being turned down for other reasons too.

That poll made me chuckle. I'm clumped in with the 27+ group...and I'm far from 27!!!

Sorry for posting twice. Your age (life experience) makes you see things a bit different. For instance, the poll started at 12-year-olds...since I'm so much older my poll probably would have started at 20 or even 25-year-olds. It never even occurred to me that 12-year-olds would be playing mmorpgs for a length of time.

Good luck on finding a guild - don't give up.

I am a recruitment officer for a Corporation in EVE.

We DID bring in a restriction on age which was based on hard experience - as we started out with no restriction.

Although it is a generalisation players aged 16 and under tended to cause more problems in the Corp. Their attitude was very much 'gimme, gimme, gimme'  and 'can I kill something now?'

Young players flit from thing to thing, grow bored easily, show little commitment to the organisation and often like to engage in 'smalk talk' in local chat.

We brought the rule in and started asking people their ages in the apllication process. When they admitted they were under-16 we explained the reasons they couldn't join. A few were more persistent and claimed that they were a lot more mature than their peers and we did give them the benefit of the doubt. Most of these eventually reverted to type and left or were ejected.

One other matter to consider in terms of corporation age ranges is the fact that both ingame and on ventrilo (voice comms) the conversation can get fairly adult and I always feel a little uneasy if we have under 16's in channel...

    haha,
yeah i think ages are something that is a little overrated when it comes to guilds, the only reason i can think of for really putting one there is to make sure people are committed and are willing to put in the time and arent going to have like parents stepping in the way which can happen for kids who are younger. although ive personally played in clans with younger guys and it was never really a major problem

When I first started playing UO back in... 97? I was 12 or 13 (Not sure when I started playing in the year 97), I didn't speak a word of Englih beside Vendor Buy Vendor Sell Bank Guard, etc :) I still managed to get into a guild where I've been taught everything about the game and PvP. Even if I was young, I've always been somewhat quiet so nobody knew my age, or ever asked it. They had a hard time trying to decript my Engrish image but I learned quickly. If you go around and talk sh!t like most teenagers trying to figure out themselve, you'll probably be put aside. If you're quiet and respectful (without getting too much brown stuff on your nose...), they wont care about your age. If I had to be in a guild, there wouldn't be any talk sh!tters, even if they're 27 or 12.

I'm 24 and act 12.  Just kidding.  I act my age, sometimes I'll act less mature...  which is more then often, but still...  I act my age.

Things is that most people with a few years under their belt has some knowledge about life that make them a whole lot easier to deal with on most lvls. Not that it is always true, but often enough.

Basically it comes down to behavior, if you have been around for a while you have the ability to take things like games for what they are. Almost always people of age has more patiens with others, are not as rude and well, mature.. :)

Better social skills really, wich is about the only thing that matters in an online only society.

Now I have met youngsters that fit into this description as well, humble and have a sense for other peoples feelings. There are exceptions to every rule..

Maturity is not always age related.   I originally thought the anyone that was mature, fun, and responsible would be welcome to my guilds.   However over time I have changed that opinion for two reasons.

#1 Dependability - I have to agree with an earlier poster that people <18 are often not as dependable.  These seem to frequently be the ones that are late, want exceptions made regularly, and I get contacted about by other guilds with complaints.

#2 Content - Believe it or not this is actually the more important one.   I cannot control what people say or do in groups or in private chats.   I've seen innuendo on guild chat and in group chat.   I've seen people angry and swearing.  I've seen people talking about the physiology of female trolls (*chukles*).   I will cannot nor do I wish to be responsible for controlling content that anyone under 18 will be exposed to and would rather not have to worry about it.   Yes I can enforce certain requirements about guild chat however I'd rather not.    I have to worry about sensitivity at work more then enough to last me through the rest of my day.

    Heres a pointer

    DONT give you age,
Ever since I was 13, I have had ppl in mmorpgs who didnt know my age, complain to me about teenagers
"I was thinking about letting MemberB become a Rank2 , hes a teenager but hes pretty good, what do you think?"

I was asked that once, I laughed...

So many times as soon as people hear your a teenager, they instantly think poorly about you.
Just dont tell them, let them make up there own age, by the way you act.

In all my guilds, the average age people think I am is 20-40 area.
Most of the time they think im a mature 20-40 but the only reason they think im that age is because I have so much time to play the game.

So really, just dont give them your age, if your mature enough, they will make there own guesses, and hopefully, they are way off =p

Edit: and this sorta goes along with other people, for the very reason they dont let people under 16..18 or under in there guild.
If you can prove your mature, its all good, but its a sad fact that many younger people are, dare I say it, annoying.
Heck when I was 14 I thought the people I hung out with were annoying at times lol.

But seriously, if you think your mature enough, just dont give your age, or fake it if you feal you can.
Ive been faking older since I was.. Cough 14.. well I tried younger, but .. yea.
It takes a lot of work to act mature, but if you seriously want to get into these guilds, you can do it, and you will learn a lot from it.
Heck if it werent for me faking my age in mmorpgs, I prolly wouldnt be near as mature as I am now.

I realize now Im just rambling on about myself.. so Im gona putt the brakes on now, and leave you with my words of advice.
Let them guess your age by your actions, and let them be far the answer.

Your age doesn't matter when it comes to life experience. Spoiled/Rich kids grow up experiencing next to nothing other than knowing to spend money and getting what he wants. Now on the other hand, a 14 year old could have experienced way more than 20+ year old people, it all depends on their life and how they live.

I'll tell you this, NO ONE can even tell I am 14 years old when I don't say my age. I usually don't say my age unless people ask, until then, they can think whatever they want.

Age is no differece. Dude, if you can't join their guild, forget them. They must be looking for powerful players or somthing they want. You don't have to give you age neither.

The whole point of the internet (For me) is that age, race, religion, etc don't matter. All that matters is personality, and maturity.

We have age restriction in our guild, but if someone under age are very mature and good friend with many members then he might get invited anyway.

Many kids can be mature when they are alone, but get too many of them and they usually forget.

    - Most *uber* guilds want peoples that follow orders without any second thought.

    - Most guilds want folks that dont cause a havoc everytime they open their mouth.

    - Many guilds consider your *skill* level in actually playing the game(althought sometimes it is the grind level).

If you say yes to all those 3 points, then 95% of the guilds will welcome you very happily no matter if you are 7 or over 100!  Age is usually a false reason behind darkers motives.
