One of the things that always annoyed me with EQ1 was as a caster using a plain staff or some wimpy dagger first starting out. I mean if you are creating a wizard, necro, enchanter, or mage, why not give them a starting weapon that shows that they are what they are? A magically inclined person. A staff the glowed, or just looked magical. Stats don't have to be good but at least you look the part. This is what I loved about Dark Age of Camelot, I played as a Hib. The staff you got after picking your class at level 5 looked magical. The ones that dropped off monsters as you level up from 5 to 50 were also the same way. Some even glowed and had stats that boosted your power. Something as small as this just make you feel like you were a caster. Melee fighters get, their weapons looked very nice as well as they leveled up and made more or got them off monsters. I know with EQ1 graphics engine that migth not have been possible but they kept the actual good looking weapons rare and you could only get them at the higher levels. I hope EQ2 doesn't go in that direction.
Anyone know if anything has been said about allowing classes to look their part as low as level 1 instead as some poor wannabe adventure?
I think things like that just allow you to get into the game more and become more hooked as you play.

So far all I can say is from what I have seen in the screenshots in journals and such from beta testers. And from what it looks like, lower level casters will have a neat looking patchworky robe, but still only get a rusty butter knife, or a branch from the nearest tree. Most the gear I have seen in the screenshots of lower level beta testers, usually describing their exploints on newbie island, is this less than impressive (not meaning the graphics, but condition) "newbie" kinda gear.
Which you may not like, and that's cool. But, I kinda like the pauper to power run before you look all high and mighty!

I must agree with the original poster to some extent.
One would assume that from the appearance of the instructors and elders at the training facility from which the new player originally embarks could afford to better equip the young apprentices before sending them out to face the dangers of the wild lands.
Especially as a mage or wizard seeing as they tend to hold themselves aloof from the rest of society deeming their own purpose a much higher calling than any other in existence. This alone would compel them to dress and equip the members of their fold with clothing and weapons or accessories that would give them an appearance of honor.
ROLEPLAYERS UNITE!!!!!
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.
I agree that the base classes should get a little something"special" looking to signify that they are starting their career. Kinda like in days of lore the master giving the graduating student a polished sword, or a special wand saved for the brightest student.
Stats of the item not important, just a feeling of accomplishment.
