Any particular reason it has to be an MMO?  I can't be sure, but I doubt that he cares whether it's online or not.

You might wanna try one of the Lego games.

Wizard101 is worth looking at, it is geared toward a younger player base.

Well it doesn't have to be an MMO but one that is based the same as an MMO.

    Absolutely.

    My Wizard*101* review http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/199209

But... in the time it takes to read that review you could be playing it! (Thanks to the very slick download system KingsIsle use).

    ...

Er... I know I sound like a fanboi... but really, it is a very good game

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.

SOE will be releasing Free Realms pretty soon.  It'll probably be the best kidfriendly MMO once it hits.  I'm only saying that because most of the other such stuff I've seen has really been meh.

Kids today need risk.  Now that their monkey bars are being taken away, slides being removed, and hard balls being trashed, it is no wonder they act up.  They even go so far as to not let them climb trees!  There is no fun like the fun that comes from actual risk.  No fun then knowing that you just might get hurt if you slip up.  So if you want your child to actually being enjoying himself, I recommend Darkfall.  The game of risk.  The game where fun does not come from levels.  Not from equipment.  Not even from completing an excruciatingly long quest.  No, it comes from being able to do whatever you want.  Being competitive and "important" is no substitute for the actual thrill of exploring a huge world.  Of fighting on naval battles.  Championing on mounts.  And even from just good old fishing when things need a change of pace.  Yet, no matter what you do, something new may just be waiting around the next corner for you to discover.  It is truly a game of dreams.

    EVE Online..............

    I'm joking, I'm joking.

My kids are playing Wizard101 right now (and me too...at least until this fricking WAR beta goes live). He will really like the combat because its a turn based card game, each card summons a different monster that hits the opponite monster and vice versa.

Remember that all of the above mentioned games seem to be item shop games, including the one I mentioned.

I actually would never suggest an MMO for a 5 year old though, buy him a gameboy or xbox maybe? Just saying.

I've never played an mmo where I didn't encounter atleast a small amount of behaviour I wouldn't be happy exposing a 5 year old to lol. Its expensive but the xbox suggestion (with no internets) is your best bet.

Toontown online seems good for the kids, my nearly 4 Year old plays. She doesn't understand much of it but keeps her entertained :)

Yeah Toontown is good, I used to play that a few years ago and I loved it. I canceled my account because I just didn't play it enough after awhile for the price it is at. So thats the downside of Toontown, it is really fun but you have to pay.(There is a trail version, where it is free but you can only explore like 1/10th of the game, maybe not even that much)

Maybe Runescape and turn the chatting off?

    Runescape- ACOWWITHADS
    Travian- cowinator

Right cause you've actually played this game and can fully recommend it to others...stupid viral marketeer...Douchefall is a more proper name I believe.

World of Warcraft. Blizzard will hold his hand leveling 1-70... And then they'll give him epics gift wrapped for standing around afk dancing.

Also he'll fit in with 80% of WoW's players. I suggest him making a blood elf named sephirothpooplol.

    Pats let Manning win.
