Graphics or Gameplay

Ah yes, the question of whether graphics or gameplay is better; my personal opinion, graphics. Would you rather play something that has beautiful textures and detail, with marvelous scenary as far as you can see with the simple point-click or hack/slash stuff, or a visually unattractive game with many complex systems and an interface not even the developer can figure out that simply will keep you occupied for a day longer? Now, while i can say that good graphics will probably sell me on a game, I understand those who plead that gameplay is important.

Both, look at AOC, WAR, and WoW

    WAR has the content

    AOC has the grathics

    WoW has the gameplay

which is better? none since they all have one thing but fail to provide a good mix of the 3

Exactly.  This is 2008.  There's no reason to not have it all in an MMO today.

Its best to have both, however if i were to choose, i would say gameplay.

    Best examples;

    Mount and Blade,

    What Darkfall COULD become.

Gameplay. I would still take (old)  Runescape over WoW , simply because the quests, levelling system, and PvP are all superior.

Unfortunately, Runescape's PvP is not what it once was, which is why I said "old" runescape.

    Darkfall wins. Vaportrolls lose.

It's really simple as far as I'm concerned.  I'd rather play a fun game that's got crap graphics then a pretty game that's not fun to play.

    Playing: Nothing
Played: Champions Online, CoX, STO, PSO, WoW, lots of free-to-play crap
Looking Forward To: DC Universe Online, Blade and Soul

Complex Gameplay, don't care about graphics and would even prefer less if that means more time spent adding depth to the gameplay. Also, anything that gets us away from this 'immershun' mindset is a step in the right direction as far as I'm concerned.

    That's the truth.

Gameplay all the way, how can anyone vote different?

The only non-gameplay thing that really makes a difference IMO is the sound/music.

Because it's 2008 and there's no excuse for a title not having BOTH Gameplay & Bleeding edge Graphics....PERIOD. If your dev team can't accomplish both do us all a favor and quit the game. Hell you can license a good graphics engine.

    No excuses.

Even nowadays you cant have a massive game with outstanding graphics...

Just think about the connection traffic, the server load with 10k users doing their things + graphical information, you cant put everything to the client side...

Not everyone have a 1gb conection... or lives in the country where the server is...  or have a megacomputer Hexa core....

All that is also affects gameplay...

so you have to sacrifice something... the graphic quality, this way you can lower the traffic Client/Server to get the max people around the world as possible to play the game, at the same time, at the same place of the ingame world... with a  good gameplay for everyone...

Or it will just be a lagfest when 500 people interact in a war...

Graphics over gameplay as most people thinks.

Crysis sold that many copies because of it's graphics and not because of it's lame B-movie story.

    gameplay>graphics for me

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

I prefure both, but not in the way some say grahpics need to be awesome, for me both gameplay and graphics need to tell me the story, it must fit together, an example would be SPORE (which I am playing atm) the game has "good" graphics for the game it is, if it was a MMO without the options SPORE has but only the looks/graphics of SPORE I wouldn't be playing it. But for what SPORE has to offer it suites the game very well.

Games like COD4 and such for me only need to look better as they do, they do trow in abit more emotions within it's gameplay but overall these type of games have not changed as much other then looking better and better and from all the war-type single player games COD4 stood out FOR ME. It was a rollercoaster ride but a damn fine one.

A MMORPG is very different then what I expect from a singleplayer game, as we all can see MMORPG are not that evolved yet to make a good mix between gameplay and graphics, we are on our way but not their yet, reason is cause this genre is still pretty young even though certain people don't think it is but forums like this with all the complaints going on proof this fact day after day, some complain about things they hardly can play on their systems, some complain about the bugs, some about how a company handles it's game, all proof to us to understand we are playing a younger genre of games then singleplayer games, and to me single player games are atleast 2/3 years ahead in tech being used compared to what developers are able to use with MMORPG's.

  • MitaraMitara Member UncommonPosts: 755

Actually there is no reason that that is so. A good server needs about 20kbps per player to handle all the traffic and none of that traffic will ever be graphics, since that is something the client handles itself. 2 different things, 2 different threads, not a problem for todays computers or even yesterdays computers...

The cost in manpower development time is the single best reason for going on compromise with graphics or programming technology. This is what happens to all MMO's right now, including AoC and Warhammer. Qualified people are rare and very costly. (which is also one of the reason a guy like Ybarra from the Stargate project is still working in this line of business, no skill, but proven records).

I would say gameplay is the largest factor, because its the basic building block of EVERYTHING to come. Next comes content, that makes the gameplay "fun". and Third is the graphics, the pretty outter coating that can be waxed and tweaked.

Its like a stuffed teddy bear... Gameplay could be the design of the bear's anatomy,(where his arms are placed, proportions of his body parts etc, if its not correct, it wouldn't be successfull as a bear). Next, the content could be its stuffing, that junk that fills the thing up and gives it life. and Third could be the fur/aka graphics, the final touch.

One simply cannot work without the other in hand.

Both. If I have to choose, there is something wrong with the available market choices.

Gameplay and Content  should be the most important things in a MMORPG ( that's only my opinion xD ). Look at games that have allready 10 years like UO which had not best graphics but still was played by thousend/millions? of people. And if you give such a good game  really good graphics then that probably would be the best mmorpg at the time xD

    there's something out there...

Why does everyone think that graphics = bandwidth. WoW takes up about as much bandwidth as surfing this forum. Do you think that when Player Y casts flaming ball of owie that the server is sending you the animation? All it sends is that the player did whatever, rather that ball looks like a red MS Paint dot or a 6 gabillion megapixel high rez in your face dot, it will make no difference.

If you don't know what you're saying, please refrain from speaking.

Now, to the original topic. Both, is what I would like, but I'll take gameplay anyday. Mortal Online looks so good just because of this, same with Aion. Both are run on solid engines, however, Mortal has me more excited because of the UO in 3d concept.

Do you really think so? I'd venture Darkfall's graphics are more than adequate to be described as 'good', this is on top of the huge leap Darkfall is trying to make in gameplay.

No they aren't great, but they are good enough for me. As long as the animations aren't as bad as the video made it seem, I can take it.
