I wish to start this post by saying that I mean no disrespect by anything in this post. I would love for those who have been following this game for the past 5+ years to respond. They are the best positioned players to answer this post, if at all.
It seems like there are many people (myself included) who have been waiting for this type of Sandbox mmorpg. The success of EVE (supposedly still growing player base) and the function of UO are instilled into Darkfall.
I have read many of the features that will be included in this game. I am simply amazed.
I guess it almost seems too good to be true!
But why would this release be any different then other releases?
I broke my rule and did not wait for the proper reviews for AoC and pre-ordered. Biggest mistake I have made with a game in a long time (The arrogance of Failcom is almost laughable and I would have shrugged it off except they double charged me after canceling my sub; not excusable).
I know the question is somewhat silly and with no answer but I just don’t want to get my hopes up high and then have them smashed down once again.
Thanks

Just don't get your hopes up, personally I assume that every game will be a steaming pile of poo until I actually play it, normally I am proved correct.
That doesn't stop me from discussing the game and liking the advertised features.
If you let yourself get excited about things like this then nine times out of ten you will be disappointed.
It's a good idea not to get your hopes up TOO high, but the way the Devs have chosen to make and publicize this game leads me to believe we'll be impressed if anything.
Unlike AoC they haven't spent almost any effort trying to impress us of it's graphics, or hype the game at all. Really most of our information comes from very matter of fact IRC conversations or interviews in which the devs simply state the games features.
In fact, the recently released video, which is the most PR they have ever done, was shot on Medium settings!! They chose to do that because it was the most honest way to show the video! It's really kinda insane that they would purposely make the game look worse, so that they don't disappoint people who don't run it on max settings, but that's what they did!
Seems to me that they are more afraid of disappointing than of low subscription numbers... Maybe that's why the game has taken so long in development, I dunno.
Anyway, I only hope that it releases with the features it promises. Anything else is just icing on the cake, and given the way the Devs do things, I'm sure I'll be impressed!
I just watched a trailer for it. I got better graphics on my Atari 2600.
I haven't seen any backpeddling on any features on the official dev. journals or Q&A's. The only thing I've seen them go back on is the Prestiege Classes, which they have moved to post launch.
At last report, they've claimed that every advertised feature is currently in the game and that all features are doing well in their internal beta. I suspect that the game will at least deliver what they claim it will... the question is will it live up to what some have imagined for so long.
I expect something akin to UO with better graphics and a stronger focus on guild vs guild pvp. In fact, I'd be more than happy with that. UO is one of my all time favorite games and one of the few MMOs that I find myself constantly going back to.
You must have had an amazing Atari 2600. I'm not saying the graphics are "blow me away" brilliant... The animations need a LOT of work and the spell/cannonball ligting needs some serious work... and I'm not personally pleased with the art direction they've chosen... but the environments look comprable to the MMO's I've played lately, and the overall reflection, lighting and shadow effects seem to be well done.
It needs some serious visual polish, I'll give you that, but if it supports the feature list and it plays well on a stable server, then I'll consider it a step up from everything else I've played, graphic flaws and all.
I am glad to know they moved the Prestige class to post-release. It was reading about Prestige’s classes that got me to asking this question. They seemed so focused on primary skill system that reading about the prestige classes seemed like an after thought. I thought maybe they were adjusting mechanics.
If they indeed shot the video at medium settings, this is excellent news to me as well. They are being honest and would seem to want to divlier a quality game with promised features.
Cannot wait : )
Thanks for responses.
The graphics are actually pretty good. You need to make sure that you download the actual video from them, and not watch the trailer on YouTube. The YouTube clips look like crap.
When considering the graphics you should remember a few things. First, the game is on medium settings, second, the video was shot at a low resolution (400x600 I think? something like that). Then there is the video compression to deal with as well. The game is also designed to support 200v200 battles even on outdated hardware. Not needing a new computer to play this game in definitely a plus.
The purpose of the video was to showcase gameplay, not graphics. I sorta agree they should have made it look better, but you can be sure that when you see the actual game after seeing the video, the graphics will not disappoint!
All in all, I think they met a good balance beteen graphics and lag.
Undoubtedly, there will be some people that will be disapointed with the game no matter how good it is. The devs have been really slow with information over the years and a lot of people have kinda made up features that have never been confirmed.
If it can pull of even half of the listed features then I wil be more than happy.
Are you going to post that in every thread?

Dang, beat me too it! I feel bad for people who play games for graphics....its like being stuck in a never ending cycle of disatisfaction - cause games will always one up each other. Dont get me wrong... i like to have nice graphics but its not why i play games...ya know?
I was a little disappointed with the overall graphics, as well. Thank you for clearing the reason up for me, now I understand why. I do not put over much stock in graphics, more into the content and stability of a game. I have been reading a lot about darkfall and have signed up for beta. I can't wait to try it out for real!

How people get fooled by AoC and Warhammer propaganda is beyond me. It has been clear all along they would offer no consequences in pvp. And lots of instances and pvp minigames.
But they get a big part of the pvp community all hyped up by saying vague stuff like: "Age of Conan will be BRUTAL" etc. which the pvp'ers interpret as full loot, consequences in pvp etc.
Warhammer does the same thing saying: "It will be ALL OUT WAR dude!!!"
But in reality their gameplay is very close to WOW. A restricted world full of instances, that might have alot of pvp, but pvp without any consequences and based on auto-attack target-assis with level/equipment as the deciding factor.
DF devs on the other hand has always given us straight answers, and never wavered on the important issues - even if they know it will turn alot of players off, they have kept saying:
- Full loot
- First person aiming - fps'ish pvp
- No pve servers
- Player skill decides pvp outcome - 3 newbs can kill one veteran.
etc
And they have been honest to us all the way, giving us screenshots on medium settings saying: this is how the game will look when you play it.
You just have a feeling that the DF guys are making the game of their dreams. They are doing their own thing, every design in game is made because they know from own experience this will add more immersion to gameplay.
Whereas with Warhammer and AoC you get the feeling that these games are made by big corporations trying to maximize profit leaning up against WOW's success, and the result of course always becomes some watered down-the-middle-of-the-road bullshit for the masses, that no-one can be offended by, nor excited.

After following this game since its announcement in 2001 I no longer have any expectations or hope so its not possible for me to be disappointed whatever happens or does not happen.
I’m still interested in the proposed concepts and features for this game and that’s why I’ve remained interested in this game more then any other over the years despite my increasing skepticism.
Posting about Darkfall has just become a surrogate entertainment whilst I waited, I presume it’s the same for many other long time followers.
If Darkfall was released and it was anything like has been promised I would not spend nearly as much time on the forums arguing about it as I have over the years, if at all.
But if I thought any other company was any were near releasing a similar type of game I probably would pay no more attention to it anymore all things considered.
So even if Darkfall does not amount to much more then what we have seen in the video I will not exactly be disappointed more like pleasantly surprised.
No expectations no possibility of disappointment.
I will be surprised if they do start public beta and then successfully launch some time this year as they have officially announced they are planning to, but if they do it will be a pleasant surprise and it will finally bring some resolution either way , but if they don’t it will just be a repeat of what has been going on for years, and I will hardly find it surprising, unfortunately much more like predictable.
Like Polarization said.. And Darkfall isn't the only skillbased game in horizon anymore. But of course I will play it and hopefully stay with it for a longer time.

Thanks for sharing with us your mistakes and the point of this post is .... I get a like alcoholics annonymous feeling are we all suposed to confess how we have misjudged in the past or something. What its the point?

Sorcery must persist, the future is the Citadel
The features are nothing new at all , the game has just been coded well and the developers have never said any different. Something old in the case of MMOs will be a good thing based on the lameness of the curent crop of MMOs.

to be completely honest, i think a lot of people, including myself, have their hopes to high for this game. Look at spore for instace, insanely hyped up game, which is a piece of junk in my opinion for the most part.

The point? To give someone like yourself the chance to Troll; even though you are a long time follower of the game and so so many posts...
For once it seems like there might be a new and refreshing game - hopefully. Sorry for being excited
I'd say that the lack of publicity this game gets from mainstream advertising and lack of 100% knowledge is the real thing that hypes people up about Darkfall.
Nobody knows truely what to expect. They also aren't promised a lot of things, mainly just a huge world to do whatever in and open full loot PVP with sieges..
Your greatest enemy in waiting for a game is your own creativity. What you may expect from lack of clarity of what'll really be in the game is what allows you to get your hopes up. It's actually a pretty good marketing scheme if you ask me.
Wise words, imo.
Wise words, imo.
I agree that’s a very good evaluation of the situation.
Unfortunately most of the supporters that have become hyped by this process, especially by Tasos over the last 5 years appear to be ignorant of how much they have willfully allowed themselves to be manipulated.
Or how the majority of the community have even become complacent perpetuators and enablers of this.
Most company’s generally do this to some extent for some of their games features and content during early development.
But Tasos is a past master of it and nearly everything about Darkfall is completely unknown or at least still vague and ambiguous and easily open to subjective and wildly optimistic interpretation by the community even 4 months before official launch, even after a 17 min “comprehensive” “game play” video has been released.
As you said, Darkfall is still mostly only a game that resides in the imagination of the fans, when that imagination meets the reality of what Darkfall actually is, perhaps some time over the next 4 months, I’m sure their will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Tasos is very cunning and manipulative, he considers himself to be a skilled in marketing and promotion and community maintaining and building, and I agree he is.
A stark demonstration of this is when he said at a recent Greek gaming conference:
“if we had launched 3 years ago Darkfall would have been buried”.
Of course 3 years ago we had no inclination of that because he was telling us beta and launch were coming soon, and the community were imagining how wonderful Darkfall would be based on his vague and ambiguous claims.
And now 3 years later he is still saying beta and launch are coming soon and the community are still imagining how wonderful Darkfall will be based on his still vague and ambiguous claims.
Hopefully if Darkfall actually does launch this time, some time this year as Tasos has continuously assured us it will then it wont be “buried” like he said it would have been if it had launched 3 years ago.
But no matter how good Darkfall will be revealed to be, it will never meet the unrealistic expectations and imaginations created in the fans minds based on 7 years of vague and ambiguous statements and claims by the developers.
The only real question is how much of a disappointment will Darkfall be.
If the game has decent graphics, open PvP, a dynamic mob system like they have stated (mobs roam, grow in strength when left unchecked) and FPS combat, I would be happy.
I have not followed the game for a long time at all; only found out about recently. But why take beta apps., provide a date, release info about a publisher (though the info about the publisher is cause for concern or a brilliant risk?), if they in fact were not ready to release the beta of the game? What do they gain by just creating false, if not closely guarder hype? They are not asking for money, they are not asking for anything. Unless they are a company of sociopaths and take pleasure is taunting the MMORPG community (at least those following the game) it stands to reason that something is going to be released to the public.
I agree with many posts here stating the 17min did not provide all the answers of the hoped for features (crafting, player built structures, NPC Mob encounters) but I can wait and hope. Because the rest of the MMORPG market is uncreative, lacks emersion and has no draw for me. I know others love it and so be it.
Last point, when the agreement was announced with AV, many claimed that the game was still vaporware because they had no released any ingame footage and they bet on that they would not. But they did shortly after.
As they say, hope is the triumph over experience!
