vanguard graphics are terrible, everything is so ugly. AOC graphics are high quality but the artistic side of the game is pretty terrible. WAR graphics are low quality but artistically are better than AOC and it runs decently in large scale RvR. I'm not going to judge darkfall until I see it in action in person but the graphics looked very uneven like it was shot from different phases of beta or like some of the older models aren't as good as the newer ones. I still think the game is a complete failure at release though~ I hope I'm wrong but it has been too long in development at this point for me to have faith in it.
AOC art is fantastic on full settings. Funcom pull their artist out of some of the top art school in europe. Right about vanguard though
The graphics remind me most of an early 2000s cinematic trailer actually. There are some areas though that are meh. The world is huge and was designed back in 2003. Would be close to impossible for them to redo the entire thing.
Everyone should keep in mind what we are actually talking about here. Darkfall, a MMORPG that offers (in theory) more than any other game to date. Developed by indy dev company. They're not able to throw in 50 programmers whos only responsibility is to make sure that those elf boobies are just right. They had to pick focus on what they wanted to do, either gameplay or superb desktop art.
I am content with the graphics, but I understand how some have been disappointed. I am sure AoC and WAR offers much better graphics and animations.
Nevertheless, Darkfall is the pioneer game of this next generation MMORPG era. No game lasts forever, and so will not Darkfall. However, it opened our eyes for demanding more freedom from mainstream developers.
Yeah, I think it all comes down to your own personal priorities. If your priorities are graphics and sound, you might want to go for one of the really big companies' games, like AoC, Lotro(which I do play), Warhammer, WoW, or wait for Stargate or another upcoming game.
If your priorities are player freedom, choose Darkfall.
It's sort of like equating the people that chose Ultima Online versus Everquest, or people that choose Dark Messiah of Might and Magic over Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.
Now, keep in mind one thing. Darkfall programmers and employees have promised us, that there is an extremely large amount of updates they're going to be giving this game.
Just like WWIIOL advanced over the years to a staggering change in not only gameplay and content, but graphics as well, Darkfall has stated they're going to be adding in prestige classes(if that hasn't changed) which are activated in a way similar to the way Jedi were in SWG, as well as god knows what other content, and I would guess that they will within the first year figure out a way to give us better explosion animations and graphics, while keeping the framerate high, and most importantly, keep the latency low(which is their main priority with this game).

Depends on how they setup the world.
They may be able to make vast changes to the entire world by making centralized changes. Also, I would wait until beta before you decide what the graphics are truly like. The video was not made by some giant marketing department. The devs just turned on fraps and staged some fights.
3) darkfall's graphics were designed for 100v100 battles at playable framerates. 6) it's still only a low-resolution video of footage taken on medium settings.
100 vs 100 battles at decent framerates across the internet even on the lowest graphics setings is going to be a hell of a trick. Shadowbane can't do it and their client was designed to run on a pentium III 1.2ghz and a 64 Mb openGL compliant video card minimum. Then again SB's horrid avatar graphics and animations are better than the ones seen in the Darkfall video. So far.
Sorry but Lineage II has had 500+ player battles since 2003. It's very possible and has already been done successfully. Darkfall should have no problem at all having 200+ player battles with the level of graphics we've seen in the videos to date. Just because some of your personal favorite games haven't been able to pull it off is far from "it can't be done".

And it's been done by Dark Age of Camelot as well. Though when you got to full 400 some people on screen it started to lag something awful. The MAIN issue is not JUSt the graphics, but the fact that combat is twitch based, not turn based, so lag is a really dangerous enemy here. With collision detection, physics (horse charges, knockback, spell knockback), twitch FPS style combat with real arrow balistics, AND 200+ people, then you really have to make some graphical compromises.
I realize that but what I'm trying to say is with the level of graphics that DF has having 200+ player battle shouldn't be that hard to pull of if a main stream MMO can do 500+ with equal or even slightly better graphics. The compromise in this case is the numbers not the graphics.

if someone said that the graphics are bad, this
excellent post, really drives home the point that DF graphics are nowhere near how some people are describing them -- they're clearly hands-down better than WOW, LOTRO. AoC's character models are generally better than DF's but then AoC performs very poorly with more than 30-40 characters on-screen.

Crack a smile everytime someone comes in this forum to bash the game on its graphics. My favorite is that thread that says....well if you guys are admittin the graphics are bad but gameplay >graphics, where is the gameplay? It hasnt been proven yet!
And i cant help but laugh and think...who is saying the graphics are bad? a handful of trolls who cant let it go that they are wrong about DF?
As long as it doesnt have the " 2D doom 1" graphics on the bushes like AOC has... my god I hate those 2D bushes... its like the trees are looking at you.. turning after you as you walk by..
I really think that the graphics in Darkfall are astonishing. I mean, just go to the gallery and take a look at the recent pics in the Races section. It's not about the polygons and pixels and shit, it's about the general view, in my opinion. And I think Darkfall captures it completely perfect. However, the video showed a few things that have room for improvements, such as the animations for spells and movement. Furthermore I'd like to see some kind of an animation for the buildings being destroyed, othern than that I would just like to see animations improved. Nevertheless you have to think about the fact that as far as we know, there's gonna be more than 500 spells and skills or so ingame. Judging by that I guess all of them can't have perfect animations.. still they should be looking better than something from Doom 1 :P
All in all I think the graphics are awesome, it's just the animations that are subject to being changed in my book at least. But anyone who says that Darkfall graphics are shit and say other MMO's out or soon to be out (except AoC of course), are better, they are just retarded.

The destruction animations just arent finished yet but the feature still works with out the destruction animations im pretty sure they will be worked on sooner or later
As bizarre as this sounds, I think a lack of animations can actually prove beneficial in FPS PvP.
Consider, the human eye locks on to movement. Thus when your eyes befall a battle scene, with several players in close combat, if their legs are stationary and only the arms are swinging , you will find that determining who is hitting whom comes faster to you, compared to the same scene if all chars are shuffling their legs and swinging their arms.
This I noticed in the trailer fighting, during the mass engagements, I could more rapidly pick out the manouvering chars as their legs were moving compared to the stationary chars who just had swinging arms.
I found that I more rapidly noticed details such as "that guy is trying to get behind this guy" , "this guy is edging back" and such.
These details would have been harder to pick up, in a fully animated scene with all the mayhem and blood ensuing.
I noted similar with the scenes of 30+ players running , the weak movement animation yielded me a more purposeful determination of exactly what was going on, and who was going where.
So for a FPS , aspiring to have a huge number of players in single battle, while still allowing the participants to retain a good spatial awareness of themselves and their foes, it may be that using less animations is actually more beneficial to the players then using more.

I usually care about graphic. But most MMOs today all have the same features, so the only thing that sets them apart is the choice of graphicstyle.
When it come to sandbox MMOs, i dont care about graphic. Its the freedom im after.
But if someone can show me another MMO with more features (100 vs100 manual aiming realtime combat) and better graphics, i will play it.
