EQ2 Graphics and Computer Hardware

EffectEffect Member UncommonPosts: 949

Just been thinking and maybe others have thought this before. It seems that SOE has said themselves that no computer currently out could run EQ2 at max settings. Does anyone else like that this was done on purpose? I mean look at Dark Age of Camelot and EQ1. With each new expansion they are adding new graphics engine updates. Maybe SOE finally just broke down and figure that since computer tech is always advancing and will advance and prices will drop as new items come out sooner or later people will be able to run that game at max but that won't be for a while. Seems like they just added all the engine there so a person just has to update the settings without them having to bother with creating or updating the engine with additions. So maybe having the graphics engine the way it is, and looks isn't a bad thing. They simply could just be preparing for the future. With the engine out of the way they can simply focus on content.

I know when I first started playhing EQ, back when the Velious expansion came out my settings were set on low and slowly my computer got updated as I slowly rebuilt it. Then once Lost Dungeons of Norrath I was finally able to play the game at max settings and really only got lag from graphics in Plane of Knowledge but it ran great everywhere else save a few Luclin zones. Now EQ1 is updating the graphics with each expansion(even if you don't buy it you get the updates in the patches) and Dark Age of Camelot introduces a new engine with each expansion of their own that shows a real change in how the game is runs and looks.

What do you think?

I know myself, and plenty of others in beta are running with alot of the settings maxed. All I did was lose the shadows, and the ground flora, which I do anyway, and I get more than adequate framerates. The only time I run into problems is when I'm in a group, and a AE HO goes off, my comp will hand for a second, more if a mage casts an AE at the same time.

I do have one gripe with the graphics. The bump mapping. It looks good on things like stone, or wood, but they went crazy with it, and bump mapped everything. It just doesn't look good on the weapons and armor. Makes them look pitted, like some tin can you dug up in the back yard, rather than an amazing magical item.

That's good. What kind of system are you running? I know I might have to upgrade my ram. I'm running a AMD Athlon XP 2500+, 512ram, Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 256mb graphics card on Win98se. I'm hoping that will be enough to run things okay at least on settings in the middle of things.

P4 2.8, 2 gigs ram and a geforce 5900 128 meg. I'd post some screenshots of how things look on my system, but I'm not that crazy ::::02::

haha. Yeah no need to get in trouble. I hope they release some type of benchmark program so people can test how their systems will handle it. I liked that Square released one of those for Final Fantasy XI, that gave back a score that you could check to see where you system setup stood.
