Give me gameplay any day. WoW brought all these new age MMO'ers who cry about graphics these days. Graphics in MMO's were never an issue pre-wow. Hell I cant figure out why these WoW'ers cry about graphics, just look at WoW
As graphics approach very good the rest of the game in an MMO suffers. and I dont play MMO's for graphics. HQ graphics are for single player games only. Sure you could have the perfect MMO with HQ graphics and gameplay and content. But if you cry about a 15$ monthly fee then you would realy cry about the fee for the perfect MMO as it would most like be 4X or 5X the normal price.

When we had to decide on our new mmo title, we researched the single player market to find some of the best experiences there. We loved the graphics in Assasins Creed, so we decided to go for that in our production. But we also loved the freedom of the old Ultima Online, and felt that we had to tell a really immersive story that had an impact on our dynamic world. We went with that and also added the ability for players to create their own missions, which made our mission guy happy, cause he now has a very good interface to create his work. It is possible to get both the graphics, immersive atmosphere and the gameplay. But there are more to the MMO life than just another dead pvp opponent, despite some peoples opinion, so we wanted to add something really extra there and came up with the idea of making it possible for players to actually build up an evil empire, playing the evil guy. Im not saying this isnt an expensive thing to do, it certainly is, but the money is actually out here, you just have to look for it. We shall see in a few years how this is going to turn out.
i want both. I want complex game play with great animations and as high as possible graphics to allow the game to run smooth with lots of people on the screen.
I always see people tout gameplay as the #1 thing and then some times make the claim that graphics don't matter at all. If that's true then i wonder why they aren't playing MUDs
I wil never play a game like Runescape, thats where I draw the line. I dont care if a game has spectacular gameplay and looks like Runescape, I wont play it
Well, i'd say in 2008 we should have both. If I had to choose I would choose gameplay.
Best games of all time for me were the original Populous game, Civilization series and the C&C series. Very unlikely get games with better gameplay than those (graphics are catching up on the last 2 now).
Another big factor for me is replayability too, most games today I have played I discard after playing them through once. With those games I mentioned, you could pretty much play them forever (I could anyway). Yesterday I ordered Spore, im really hoping it has good gameplay and replayability.
I didn't mention fun because I pretty much have fun playing any computer game, I guess if a game has great replayabiliy it means it is a LOT of fun
I read from a website been tested on different computer specifications to play AOC and the result turn out to be a suprise that you need very high specs to play better graphics. Even a Ncidea 8800GTX only able to play with minimum settings. I don't remember what website I read about.
I remember I was excited to install LOTRO on my computer and the first few minutes when I login LOTRO, it was really exciting moment. The town looks very nice, the lightings on houses .... etc. The graphics really enjoyable. But the enjoyable environment did not last long until I reach The Last Home, there was Water Fall on the right side of the big house, it never look like a water fall no matter what setting I settled but it looked like a white strap on a ball running lightning fast.
But anyway, LOTRO was the best graphics mmorpg I have played so far, and now, it is very difficult to accept poor graphic game. Besides, I upgraded my graphics card ...etc constantly are for better games.
Gameplay is king. In my opinion graphics are only the icing on the cake. In fact in any kind of game it really annoys me to see "but it has good graphics" being used as an excuse for mediocrity.
I also wonder if I am the only person who is annoyed when games advertise themselves by displaying pre-rendered video rather than gameplay? Any game that won't show me actual game footage in commercial material rings my alarm bells pretty hard.
It has to be both for sure. It's not like developers hire only guys who do the layout and planning for the game, they also hire all the little parts.Texture makers/sounds/music/models/detail,it all has to be in there.I think gameplay has been VERY superficial, they go with a basic idea such as PVP or raiding or RvR and not any real concepts beyond that.As far as graphics go,most games are using pre built engines and just using terrain editors to build a fast map that really has not been designed around the game.
Another issue i have with gameplay is that every game i have seen uses a pre scripted AI,or just some basic path noding or none at all. They just dot some mobs around quickly with no real AI or planning.I mean with most of these game engines nowadays any person single handedly can build a map in one week easily, and the average joe would think a pro did it.Even NPC's in games are 90% static with no real game interaction or movement.Vanguard actually had a nice early sequence in the game where by the different mobs were attacking each other, that is cool and shows some effort other games are not.I still here people talking like WOW has good gameplay,i just laugh when i hear that nonsense,WOW is put together very cheap with no effort at all.Other than some of the cites, that are quite big , i could put together anything in WOW in a very short time with no help at all.But even cities in WOW are very static, some npc's wander around with no real purpose and most are just static never moving an inch ever.
Game play for the most part has been very weak in most every game, witch is why we need at least some good looking graphics to pass our time in the game.I think most everyone also wants a lot more player customization,i mean more models means a ton more animation work by the developers, but i think players would appreciate the effort. Most of the player models i see in games are super cheap, done by amateurs in a very short time,so there is a lot of room for improvement in that area, even without adding more models.Gameplay also needs a story line to follow, most games have no real storyline, but make up bits and pieces as it goes along.I doubt any game can ever compare to FFXI's storyline. Most games have a good start by copying a pre made theme, such as Stargate or LOTR.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

this annoys me too and it always stuck me odd as how this isn't considered false advertising.

I was an all graphics man until I "discovered" AoC and realized I wasn't having fun with such awesome graphics.
sigh... what a waste.

Both, but I'm biased towards gameplay.

Be paid for Beta Testing, don't pay to Beta Test.

91% for gameplay? Looks like Darkfall Online will be VERY VERY popular!
