COH or SWG?

Hello, recently I have been wanting a new MMORPG,

You see, my first MMORPG was SWG (Star Wars Galaxies), but back then, about a year ago, my computer kind of sucked. For 1, I only had 128mb of Ram so it was very laggy, and I had a bunch of problems. For 2, my video card wasn't all that great either. So I took it back and got Final Fantasy XI, and a new video card (The Radeon 9200 128mb). I didn't really like most of FFXI, what I did like was that it's recomended Ram was only 128, unlike most MMORPG's who require 256 (wich I didn't have). But FFXI really got boring to me, it just wasn't my type I guess, so I got COH (City of Heroes). Now at the time I got it I was really into super heroes so that helped, I really like it. But of coarse, it required 256mb, so I finally saved up some money and upgraded to 256mb Ram. So for about 3 months now I've been Playing COH perfect with no lag and having a lot of fun. But recently I've really just been getting bored of it, so I thought "why not just go get SWG again?", being the true Star Wars fan I am. But the only reason I haven't yet is because I have been looking up reviews on it, and a lot of people think it is boreing, and I am only alowed one MMORPG, due to the money a month, so the question is "Should I abandon City of Heroes (loosing all my charactors) and get Star Wars Galaxies?"

I just need some players of Star Wars Galaxies opinions of the game, I would appreciate it if anyone would help me out. The Poll is just for fun to see the final percentage of everyones opinons, but also it would be cool if you could post your opinion of each game.

Thank you very much for reading all of this writing (I didn't excpect to write that much lol), I appreciate it.

My advice drop SWG and wait for CoV in the mean time find something else

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

Yes, I am eagerly waiting for COV, but that's a long ways away. Man, not too many SWG fans around here huh? Well, I truly am a Star Wars person, and I think JTL will be awsome. But I still love COH, I hate these kinds of decisions!

Honestly, I wouldn't go with either... I got sick of CoH, especially when the devs decided to start 'telling' people they should always be in groups.  The only class that hasn't suffered completely game-altering nerfs is the blaster class, while tanks (my preferred class) and scrappers ended up getting the brown end of a long stick.  CoH seems to be getting overpatched by whiners and guys that aren't 'casual players,' people that play their games for 12 hours a day as opposed to one or two.  I mean, whoever heard of a superhero that can only get a cape at level 20?  It doesn't even add any reward to the gameplay other than something that could be replicated by a beach towel, and the ability to rub lower-level characters noses in it (which, seems to be one of the main things the community likes doing.)  Then again, I got bored with the game rather quick, and disgusted with the player base when some random guy four levels above me KSed me, not even getting experience for the kills, and then proceeded to dance in front of me (purposely) after one-hitting the mob.  Needless to say, he was a blaster.

SWG just didn't interest me, honestly.  It's much more of a social game, but my best friends who play the game said now the gameplay isn't even worth it.  I really liked the idea of a social game, and ESPECIALLY liked the idea of the way you could develop characters.  There is a lot more RP in SWG than in CoH (I have seen NONE in CoH, aside from people named j4ck455 running around and playing the part of, well, you get the idea.)  From what I know, the player base in SWG is a lot better than in CoH, and each character is unique.

The real question you should ask yourself is if you want a mindless action game like CoH, or an almost purely social game like SWG.

But, to concur with other posts, I'd just outright find somethine else to play.  Neither of these ideas seems like a good option, with CoH getting too difficult for an average player (my level 17 blaster can only handle one or two whites at a time while backed by a defender, and with defense buffs) and SWG really doesn't have much else to it aside from getting that one skill you liked by grinding or sitting in a bar and going "Hey, I know whatcha mean by those damn (insert random difficult enemy here)." while the dancers (who are actually AFK and using macros) are healing you.

anyway, those are my two cents... and for an extra two, I don't think CoV will be much of an improvement.  I've never liked PvP in RPG's cause it's not really about skill or cunning, it's about numbers and hardcore equips.  Only thing I might take a second glance back at the game is if it had the ability to finally mix and match primary superpowers and secondary powers, like the bad guys can do.

I play SWG!  I've been playing for 11months and am a lil bored with it.  I find the most fun when I play with my guildmates and friends I met ingame.  Lots of changes since i first started, PC jedi, jedi quests, wookie armor, a few instanced dungeons along with some tough dungeons.  This was my first mmorpg.

Also with 256 ram it may not be enough?  I first started playing with 256=really laggy, then i went to 384= still laggy,  512mb= less laggy, I now have 1 gig of ram and suffer from little to no lag even in lag city(Coronet).

    Wow,

Felious, first of all, thank you for taking the time to write all that, I really understand what you are saying. I do now realize that COH doesn't have much RP in it at all, and I too also hated the fact that you can only get capes at lvl 20, and you can't even make them huge like the cape in the picture of Hero 1. I am really all for RP, that's why I do think SWG would be better for me (plus I really like Star Wars). Let's see I had it for a bout 2 months when I first got it, and the only reason I got bored was because of the freaken lag (now if what you are saying is true, "Problemz", then that scares me). But maybe it really does get boring after a while. Anyway, is there a better MMORPG than COH and SWG?

Problemz, are you serious? Why would it say on the back of the box "Recomended Ram: 256" and then you need 1 GIg of Ram, that's quite off. I mean, COH wasn't even worth playing when I had 128mb of Ram, then when I got 256 I got like no lag and it says "Recomended: 256" on the back too.

I played SWG for about 3 months, and it was soo fun when i started. But then it was horrible, it's so repetative, and full of grinding. If you want a game where you grind to be the best then go for it.

I would say just wait for a new game to come out and start fresh with everyone else.

SWG really requires at the very least, 512MB of RAM, and even then I was lagging attrociously in heavily populated areas. Ideally you want 768MB.

Still playing SWG but each day I ask myself why? Game is still a mess of bugs and exploits. Better off with a different game.

And as stated above you will need a MINIMUM of 512MB to play, even then you will lag horribly. The Lag doesnt stop until you get over 1 GIG of ram.

      Hello!

When SWG first came out, minimum specs were 256. It even said so on the box. So you never had a chance of it working. Roughly 4 months after SWG was out, the minimum specs increased. Just like it says on the box "specs subject to change in the future." Right now 1 GIG memory is needed to play SWG. The game has expanded with updates, patches, and more patches.

For 2, my video card wasn't all that great either.

SWG requires at minimum a GeForce 3 to play. GeForce 4 (or equivilant) works far better.

So I took it back and got Final Fantasy XI, and a new video card (The Radeon 9200 128mb). I didn't really like most of FFXI, what I did like was that it's recomended Ram was only 128, unlike most MMORPG's who require 256 (wich I didn't have).

Actually most newer MMORPGs require 1 GIG RAM. It is true one can get buy with 512, but that is minimum specs. Aka that is toeing the line. It is best to not toe the line, but to be far from it on the safe side.

Older MMORPGs can be played with 256 RAM, and work best with 512 RAM. AO, DAoC, EvE. UO, AC, and EQ can easily be played with 256 memory. (EQ might need 512 now because of the insanely new amount of patches and expansions LOL.)

But FFXI really got boring to me, it just wasn't my type I guess, so I got COH (City of Heroes). Now at the time I got it I was really into super heroes so that helped, I really like it.         COH is due to have a major expansion soon. Also it is a modern MMORPG, so you should not have been surprised that you had to upgrade from your outdated 128 RAM memory.

being the true Star Wars fan I am.

Hold on, didn't you say your first MMORPG was SWG? Wouldn't that mean you already have it? But just could not play it because your computer was too outdated? Are you now just asking should you re-subscribe to SWG?

IMHO in your situation the answer is no. Only because your computer still will not be able to handle SWG. You need 1 GIG RAM <- this is most important.  And a GeForce 4 (or equivilant.) Though you can squeeze by with a GeForce 3 on lowest game settings. Keep saving your money for upgrading to 1 GIG memory if you ever want to play any new MMORPG ..... not just SWG, but EQ2, and others. Don't worry, SWG will be around another 4 more years no matter what. Plenty of adventure will be waiting for you. image

And to the SWG "hatas" out there responding, notice the part where he said "I just need some PLAYERS of Star Wars Galaxies opinions of this game"   Anyone who is NOT currently playing SWG, or has NOT played SWG within the past 2 months, move on, move on, this is not a thread that concerns you. image

     ZildjianUFO,

To answer your question about if SWG is a nice game or not. It is still nice enough that players have fun playing it - especially a brand new player like yourself (whenever you do end up starting SWG.) Plenty of content for new players starting right now. SWG is first intended for Star Wars fans. Next for players with little free time. If you fit one, or both descriptions you have the best chance of enjoying SWG.

Hardcore gamers who have 10, 12, 16 hours of free time per session to play are better off waiting for EQ2 to come out. image

One last thing ZildjianUFO..... did you ever put in your SWG CD-Key when you first got the game? If you did, right now SWG is allowing all former players to play for 10 free days. Any veteran player who has not been playing at least for 3 months (I think its 3 months if memory serves me right.). Emails were sent to all SWG players.

I have the same interest in CoH and SWG and I  can't play both either.  I cancelled SWG about a month ago and I still play CoH, but not all that much.  It does get boring after a while, all there is are missions, but with a group it is still fun every so often.

Surprisingly to many people here at mmorpg.com, I love SWG and I will most likely go back sometime.  I just love to play many types of mmorpgs and right now I am getting back into Dark Age of Camelot for a while.

Lately I have been switching from one to another, trying some Free Trials, and not really sticking with a game for very long.  Once World of Warcraft and Everquest II come out, I hope that changes.

The only problem I will have then is choosing between them!

    P.S.

I played Final Fantasy XI and liked it, but the constant need for a group really took the fun out of it.  I spent more time waiting for a group than actually playing, but when I was in a group it was fun.

Oooo I've played both! And what I say is... SWG if your comp can handle it @_@. The thing is, in SWG I never ran out of things to do! I wasn't really a fighting type so I mastered dancer lol made some money off tips and went off shopping on my speederbike >_> for clothes of course. In CoH there was only ONE thing to do.. and that was fight, fight, and kick some villian butt! Oh wait.. that's fighting... CoH would've been better with crafting and weapons ^-^. Anyway, I LOVE SWG 'cause you could always just play your own way. THere isn't just like a straight path you have to go in to "succeed".

But... if you comp isn't so good... I dunno @_@

I just recently stopped playing SWG (should have stopped when the madness started)

In all good conscience I simply can not recommend SWG. It is now a terrible game because of some horribly misled decisions. They were so busy listening to the whining of children and catering to their every whim that they forgot about what makes a good MMORPG.

Due to the recent influx of player jedi and the prevalence of soloing due to overpowered buffs and armor the game is completely unbalanced and for the most part not even social anymore. Were it not for these factors I myself would still be playing and loving the game that started out so well and has ended so badly.

I have played both SWG and COH for a while. At first, the uniqueness of CoH really grabbed my attention. However, before long, the game falls into a rut of regluarity. Running the streets looking for gangs, no matter where you are, or what cult/clan you are fighting, it's basically the same experience. Even instanced missions recycle the same supposedly modular rooms until you can run them blindfolded.

SWG on the other hand has very little of the set plot or storyline that CoH does. You find yourself lost in a sea of uselessness when you start the game. The classes are imbalanced, or specialized depending on how you look at it (it seems every successful combat character is a TKM) However,  there is enough varieghty in SWG that I found myself returning to SWG after a few months play of CoH. SWG also offers the ability to outfit yourself with various equipment, upgrade and specialize yourself in skills and abilities mixing and matching from several character class choices. I wont go into the pro's and con's of allowing players to have houses and cities on grand scale. But it is fun to outfit your own home, and even put together a guild and develop a town amongst friends. Galaxies worst problem however lies in it's amazingly bad lag. Something CoH doesn't suffer from often.

Overall, I would suggest SWG for players who plan to stick with the game for an extended period of time. However, if your really into marvel comics and superheros, CoH is still a great game on it's own.

    Well...

A casual can earn everything in CoH, however they work on finding more stuff to do for everyone.  Althought they encourage grouping(which is good), they do not prevent or limit soloing in any form(which is good).

My scrapper can kill most lieutnants 1 level above me with a critical with my best attack if I land a critical and did a build up(which happen a lot as a first attack to initiate fights, Boss are serverly damaged but never kill a boss in 1 blow...took at least 3), but this is after level 28 where I get my best attack...and add a few levels for the enhancements to put on it...someone will be hard presseed to tell me they nerf soloing for scrapper, I cant bear to level up any non-scrapper as finished missions is often hard if not outright impossible without outside help way to often, with scrapper unless there is an Archvillain, I can solo it...archvillain only need me to find any healer with a minimun happy trigger healing finger!

CoH is working to ADD more stuff for both the casuals and the hardcore freaks, I am eager to see if they find a way to not aggro the casuals.  Capes doesnt aggro any real casual, as anyone can reach it easily, they just want to split the progressions in the levels, which is good, it give you a reason to level up.  The only thing that could be a valid arguments against CoH pro-Casuals is the need to complete the TF for an accolade, it is an issue to have 5 hours in a row 8 times or more for a casual.  Ideally TF rewards should affect you while you are on TF only, if you dont do TF to start with, you should not care whatever is in there.

For the player community issues, well...personnally I NEVER hunt outside when I can go instanced.  You can Instanced all the time in CoH and the reward is worth doing it.  I quit many groups that ''hunt'' outside...sure, I rather solo then be ''outside''.

CoH is about giving you options as how you play the game, you play outside or instanced, fine, your call... They try to encourage grouping, but they dont enforce it in anyway!  If you play a Defender or a Tanker and complain at lack of solo ability...well...why dont you try a class that is not specialised on 1 aspect that make them group wanted?  A tanker or a defender should not even be able to solo 3 minions IMO, groups WANT them all days long...and dont say you want self healing capability and this is why you play defenders, defender cant heal themselves much, not even master empath!  They are the best healers, but not themselves, from the start, you know it is a grouping carreer.  Same with tankers.

SWG have a system with a fixed set limit to reach, and they will never work anything around it.  Logical or not, it limit my interest, I love to know I can always evolve...a system like CoH leave doors open for future evolution of the character, that door is pretty much close from my perception at SWG where you lose past developpment to developp new aspects...and they dare ask you to earn XP for that.  Transfer(which it is), if allowed, need to be allowed in a nice and eas way(like the trials in CoH).

SWG is developped by a team that have no issue to enforce anything on you.  CoH is developped by a team that try to make the players happy by letting them do what they want, as long as the general good of the many is not harmed, and so far, they do an average score, which completely make the competition fade as they all failed miserably on this chapter(unlike SoE who claim they work for the general good of the many, while in fact they are either clueless or harming it directly, the general good of the many past by the most simple folk that solo or tradeskill, if that simple person cant be happy, then neither can be the ''majority'').
