WoW Clone

alien1984alien1984 Member Posts: 119

Another chinese clone that is "free to play". I love how they copied models and so many aspects of wow. No originality what so ever. Graphics look the same, ui looks the same, jewelcrafting, blacksmithing, hell they even copied taurens.

Since its from china you can guarantee servers full of bots and gold sellers after 1 month. Dont fall for the free to play gimmick. You will never succeed in these games unless you purchase from the cash shops.

So heres a cheers to china and their 5 million cloned titles, you guys sure know how to copy and paste!

I guess from a gnomes point of view every Tauren looks alike.

and i guess that makes every mmo that ever included humans a clone of the first to... and every mmo to include health bars...

the entire mmo industry is full of copied ideas, and most of the things people say are copied from wow, they copied from someone else first. If something works, others are sure to take inspiration from it.

I wouldn't call this a wow clone though. it may have a similar interface and graphics style, though not the same. but it has a far different class system, it's got a housing system, different transport system, different pvp system, basically only a very few common grounds. if that's enough to make it a clone, then every single mmo is an all out clone of another.

Do some research, the game is a remake of a game in china. Germany purchased publishing rights. Know your facts.

Well brilliant then if it is a clone. I didn't mind WoW, but certainly didn't feel it was worth the money to keep playing. So if this is a clone...like most every other game in existence, then at least it is free...=P

I feel it is the WoW generation, whose first MMO was WoW that feels every game is a WoW clone. Those of us who have been playing since the 90s know that indeed WoW is the clone.

This game isn't  Chinese developed it's European developers, namely Frogster they brought you Bounty Bay
I love how they copied models and so many aspects of wow.
Just like every other MMO in the last 5 years.

Taurens are a ripoff of another mythical race, the minotaur  only WoW made them a playable intelligent race.

Runes of magic will be english/german European servers

Okay, so Runes of Magic bears a passing resemblance to World of Warcraft. The original Taiwanese creators of the game were big fans of Blizzard's MMO, so it makes sense that there would be some similar elements. Yes, the graphics, fonts, and interface all channel the wildly successful MMO, and sure, some of the character classes and abilities are very much like those you'd find on Azeroth. And yes, perhaps the first monster I saw taken down in the demo I attended this morning was a minotaur creature called a Tauren Patrolman. While at times it stretches the very limit of the word homage, Runes of Magic isn't a WoW clone. If anything, it's a game that seeks to harness the best elements of all MMORPG games into one, adding a few innovative new elements in the hopes of becoming one of the most compelling free-to-play online RPGs in existence.

Rather than focus on what's similar to WoW, let's take a look at where the game differs instead.

Character Advancement: Covered this about a week ago, but we'll cover it again. Characters choose one class. At level 10 they choose another. Both classes have primary and secondary abilities. You can switch freely between the two classes, but you can only use primary abilities from your primary class, along with secondary abilities from your secondary class. Want a warrior that casts a little healing who can transform into a priest that can take a beating? You can do that. Want a mage who can backstab and stealth when the mood strikes him? No problem. Whether inspired by Final Fantasy XI or D&D multi-classing, the system allows for many different combinations of classes, letting you create a character custom tailored to your play style.

The Update Schedule: The Runes of Magic team want this game to buck standard RPG conventions by offerring not only free updates every few months, but free updates that include big changes. New classes and new races, generally relegated to retail expansions for the big-name MMO games, free additions such as these should be plentiful on Runes of Magic.

The Rune System: Now this bit is very, very nifty. Say you've finally found the perfect matching set of armor, but then come across a more powerful piece of equipment that looks plain ugly. Instead of ruining your outfit, strip the powers from the new object into a rune and then attach it to your old hat. You can even combine two runes together to form a more powerful one, though the higher the powers the more chance you have to fail. Think of it as equipment gambling - do you destroy this high level piece when you could possibly fail, losing it all in the process?

Player Housing: Player housing as been done before, but the Runes of Magic team is doing some interesting things with the player-made space. You have all of the standards - places to hang trophies, display your weapons, or store your extra items. Your house starts of small, growing with you as you level to reflect your increasing power and status. You can even invite friends into your home to engage in steamy cyber discuss upcoming battles.

By far the neatest function of player housing in Runes of Magic is the dress dummy. Place it in your home, equip it with a set of armor, and then with the click of a button you can swap out your equipment with what the dummy is wearing. Perfect for those who consistently change primary classes, as well as anyone who has ever played a WoW druid. You can set up as many dummies as you need, and the same functionality works with wall-mounted weapon sets.

Dynamic Dungeons: Certain dungeons in Runes of Magic will be dynamically generated, meaning that you will go inside and gain treasures, come out, and the next time you enter the dungeon layout and treasures have completely changed.

Guild Wars: Guilds will be able to declare war on other guilds in Runes of Magic, allowing for conflict ranging from one-on-one fights in the city streets all the way up to massive instanced stronghold wars, where the rival guilds battle against each other for rank points and the treasures of each other's guild castles.

Server Wars: The developers are actively working on incorporating server PVP, where multiple servers fight over a neutral territory for the honor of their particular group of people who randomly chose that particular game world to call home.

Free-To-Play: It's free, so the price point is somewhat better than WoW's.

So yes, the game takes elements of World of Warcraft, but it also steals ideas from everyone else - Dark Age of Camelot, Final Fantasy Online, Everquest, Guild Wars, etc. It's the product of a couple of guys who just wanted to put everything the loved into one package. The strategy doesn't always work, but sometimes throwing everything you think tastes good into one pot can result in something that tastes even better.

I'm looking forward to trying it out for myself, this is what Archlord should have been.

So your saying thats its just like WoW copying Everquest then?  WoW didnt start the trend, it just made an easy mode version of Everquest.

Although i disagree with the part about it becoming full of bots and gold farmers/spam in a month...that will only take a few days of open beta for that to happen.

For some ppl there's WOW and the rest. For others it's "P2P MMOs are great, F2P MMOs are sucky/grindfests/clones/etc". When these 2 ideas collinde in the minds of some feeble individuals, demons are born :) To keep it short: feel free to play whatever you like, but don't trash a game just because you can't see beyond your own prejudices. RoM has enough features to become one of the best MMOs currently running.

I wish there were more Asian WoW clones. WoW really set a good healthy standard for traditional fantasy mmorpgs. So I totally encourage Asian developers to release f2p games that match or at least closely approximates the WoW experience. Of course they should also make some changes to their formula that separates them from their competitors games.

So if you are an Asian f2p dev, please make more games that match WoW, not just in graphics but in features and polish.

Guild Wars 2 is my religion

Like other people said, everything is a copy. Look at movies, movies are all starting to look the same becuase sometimes there's just not enough things you can change to make it different. I think this game is bring in aspects of games that I really enjoy. The housing part is great it's one of the things I liked while playing SWG. I really want to see how this thing progresses.

To everyone saying things started with EQ or that WoW copied EQ it copied many games EQ included yes.... and No mmo is a WoW clone so what if they seem alike? I started Playing MMO's when meridian 59 was first released.... Almost a year before Ultima online and even UO was released before EQ... I've seen all aspects of WoW and many other MMO's through the years...

The people that tend to be like Cloine are usually the WoW generation of MMORPG players that that was like their first ever MMORPG and everything else is a clone of it....  To me WoW is simply another MMORPG.

Blizzard managed to execute alot of stuff really well but didnt really innovate much... In fact the entire MMO industry hasnt really been to innovative since its inception. The most innovative thing that has come in recent years? Jumping lol....

The genre needs a face lift and we need to get back to stories and many other things. Telling a story well makes an MMORPG so much better.. Gameplay is another aspect. We have ended up with a genre that is not all that innovative anymore and developers need to breath some fresh air into it...

Many people play Free To Play games because the experience really isnt that much diff. Some people frown on cash shops without actually understanding them.... These guys have stated even with cash shop items there will be free alternative they are trying.

And really if they can offer a good alternative to WoW for free more power to them. We need to get some innovaton in the MMORPG genre and then maybe i'll start paying more again....

You are aware that WoW is an EQ an UO clone right?

mmo "noobs" think that WoW was the first mmo to do what it did.

The good thing about a clone is...

You can kill it, and it will get back up a few minutes later to kill again.

Use em while you got em boys (and girls). Me, I'm gonna say I'll pass to this one and just assume those that stick with it won't get in the way of me playing Darkfall once it comes out.

(I so hope I find farmers on DFO, I will redefine 'medieval' on them to new heights)

Having played this game for almost 1 months now I can tell you that it has 2x the amount of features that WoW has. Jewelcrafting ?!? Actualy RoM has professions that WoW doesn`t. DAoC used Taurens looong before WoW did. At this point , from my point of view , RoM is the best F2P MMO out there and it beats some P2Ps too.
