I have been looking into this game for sometime know and I was wondering would I like this game if I enjoy FPS games like Counter-Strike, UT 2k4, Call of Duty. Also how many of you on these fourms still play Planetside and if you do how is the community ? I have a couple more questions....
Comments
hiyaz! I played planetside for quite some time, and your welcome to ask any questions ya like
Planetside is a great first person shooter in theory. Unlike CS, you and your team (which you have to recruit yourself at base) fight over bases trying to conquer the majority of a continent and force the opposition off. Each base offers a different special ability (Tech Centers make advanced vehicles possible, relay centers activate defense turrets, bio facilities provide fast respawn) that make certain locations crucial to planetary conquest. There are no NPC's, and everyone fighting is player vs. player. You pit your wits and skill against others around the world!
There are 3 sides to the conflict. The Terran Republic are an opresssive regime based on total control. They have the most rapid fire weaponry and host an amazingly destructive arsonal. Although are not quite built for mobility per say.
The New Conglomerate are freedom loving soldiers that have taken up the call to liberate the planet from the Terran Republics grasp on the planet. Their fundimental belief is that "Bigger is better" and their race is filled with technology that provide an opressive arsonal of firepower (tripple barrel shotguns, liberator tanks with a honkin huge cannon)
Vanu Sovriegnty are the third group, using alien technology to gain a tactical advantage with maneuverability and power. Bringing lasers and hover-vehicles to gunfights, the vanu have the nasty habit of getting everywhere you wish they weren't.
Each race supports it's own unique vehicles and style of play. The GMs in my experience have always tweaked the system to try and offer a more balanced racial system that is ongoing to this day I have no doubt (I have since stopped playing)
Character advancement is also creative. You can train and get certifications in various alternate weapons, armor, and vehicles. if you find yourself not so much the grunt, but a leader, there are an alternate set of advancements that will give you the edge up on a tactical scale. (Good leaders can scramble opponents radar, call down orbital strikes, and fire off EMP's to disable enemy vehicles)
Overall, a dynamic system of advancement allows people to diversify and specialize so that literally no 2 people in your group could be the same. (medic/engineer, pilot of all things, MAX suit pilot, weapons specialist, leader, sniper, stealth trooper, newbie, etc.)
Overall, there's a lot to like about planetside. But there are just as many downfalls as well.
-----------------
Cons of planetside:
-----------------
Not all game engines are created equal. And planetsides certainly is the laggiest of the bunch. Ever play on a bad lag server in counter-strike? When prime time comes around, thats how it feels. hickuping players with shotguns that can kill you without them appearing to fire at you. being sniped because you appear to be standing still, even if your on the run. Etc.
Another problem is the "lemming reaction", where players just follow in a great horde from base to base leaching off each others ability to capture bases. Ultimately, nobody wants to stay behind and defend your recently won captures, Thus, two hordes of armies work clockwise of each other eating up bases and leaving them unguarded. it's even worse however if the two teams meet. a sheer wall of combat that stretches across the continent. a sheer wall of lag as well.
The lag in the game is so bad that most people play with the graphics turned all the way down. It's the best way to be good in the game, but you miss out on a lot as well. Far plane clipping can be important to a sniper. and if you dont have a good computer, your just fodder to snipers.
Finding and keeping a group together can be a challenge. Dropships can explode, leaving pilots frustrated and possibly even going to other continents to get new dropships. spawn tubes can be exploded, making your team spawn all over the continent. It's common policy to "camp" spawn tubes. It's like spawning naked in counter strike just to have a grenade land at your feet and blow up the whole team. It happens ALOT. A good leader can keep a squad together. But for the most part, a squad can fall apart and you find yourself alone and outgunned. Death is part of the game.
You figure in a MMORPG, it shouldn't be hard to find people, right? When all of a race goes and invades one particular base following each other like lemmings, you can landgrab all you want at other bases. But you dont get any experience if you dont kill anyone (and hte more you kill, the more xp you get) so you aren't rewarded for your work unless your following the mainstream.
FRIENDLY FIRE PROBLEMS: In the heat of fire, you can be kneeling down in the corner laying down suppressive fire while all your spawning team-mates run in front of you. nobody looks, nobody cares. Each time someone jumps in front of you (either through lag or carelessness) you gain 'grief' which slowly eats away at your accuracy, eventually inhibitting yourself from using things and can eventually kick you off the server, even ban you. But more to the point, it's a first person shooting, with frizzled nerves and people can get downright rude and nasty if they step in front of you while your shooting. The community isn't as laid back as many other RPG oriented games. Some players also go around running people over. You would think that running someone over would give the driver grief, but in fact, getting run over damages the vehicle, and thus: by being run over and dieing, you get grief...
Also keep in mind that there are only so many continents to play on. After a few months, or even a week, you realize that you spent perhaps all saturday to liberate a continent and fortify it. You goto sleep feeling good about what you've done, just to log on in the morning and realize your side has lost it and you have to go and fight over the same bases again just like the day before. Repeatition is rampant. You fight over the same parcels of land every day until really, there's nothing new.
Alot of advancements have been made since I last played. They came out with an expansion (Which increased the games lag) And I'm sure hundreds of patches nerfed and buffed various parts of the game. For content, I give it A+. But the lag and repeatative nature just does it in.
If you like FPS, than you'll have loads of fun for 3-4 months.

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith

I use a athlon xp2600,1gbram and a radeon 9800pro and i play with all setting turned maximum and never get below 20fps in any battle.Have the occasional spike to 10fps mainly on zoning into a big battle which cools down to 20 plus in a few secs.
This game has 2 major requirements though-broadband and 1gb RAM.
One word of caution, if you like 2k4, be aware that you can't really be doing acrobatics (jumping all over the place when in a firefight). By doing this, your character ends up losing stamina which effect implants, movement, etc.
Coming from the same backround, Planteside to me at least is a fully realized version of game like Battlefield 1942, Unreal 2kwhatever, etc. When in large heated battles it pretty much plays out like a war. So in terms of the friendly fire issue, it makes sense, and at the same time cuts down of the griefing.
It is a fun game and worth the time.

Thank you for the feedback. I will not purchase the game based on the negative comments.
It's an interesting idea but poorly implemented from the sound of it.
The game isn't that bad. Lag sucks if you have an older pc but there's ways to tweak that. 1 gig ram works best, I have 1.5 gigs and have no lag at all during any time or any battle. This is a good game to have on the back burner. I play in spurts. When one game gets old I renew my sub to this and I can step away from the other game for a time.
Plot, there is a plot but not a big one. It is a FPS game, the only plot you need is to show me which guy to shoot. There's some good features about the game if your into any type of strategy then there are some elements in this game when you step into a squad leader role and actually lead the squad. So few people who do.
Overall, this isn't really a game you play for a year straight. Its a game you pick up here and there to help pass the time, or while waiting for other MMO's to come out, or for an mmo vacation.
this game never gets boring been playing since may 2003 (beta) with about 6 months break, and im still loving this game, tried all the sides and i must say i like the terran republic best.
but for the real cheap retail price it's defenently worth trying.
don't know how the core combat xp is though, never seen a reason to buy it.

Planetside is great fun for any lover of FPS but like all FPS it bores fast(at least for me).
But after leaving for a couple of months the itch returns and because the levels in this game are easy to get and your char waits for your return its so easy to get ack into.
I have quit like 3 or 4 times and have kept coming back.Quiting again at the end of this month but i am sure i be back early next year.
I played planetside for quite some time thought it was pretty cool at first, then it just goes total crap. I love FPS but this game just didnt have the same FPS feeling like cs and dod do, i found moveing anywhere slow the combat slow and the game itself was just slow and plain boaring.
But on a more positive note the game has some play value for like 5 months maybe but once you quite their aint no going back, well not for me anyways. Like most FPS it takes quite alot of practice to become good or atleast decent at it, which is ok apart from the fact that with this one you can spend 5 months and still be utter crap at the game.
Overall i think its worth the price to give it ago but id much rather play Day of Defeat or Counter Strike if i was in an FPS mood.
Very Interesting,
I got a P4 1.7, 512 RAM, and a G4 Ti 4200 128mb.
Can I play Planetside with minimal lag? Or is that almost bare minimum for under 20fps?
Also, generally, is it the best MMO game right now or is there another one, even an RPG that be more fun, but I'm not looking to play hardcore for more than a month? Shoud I stick with CS, DoD, UT, Tribes 2, Halo 2? Like is this the most fun for an fps? The MMO seems tempting, but I don't wanna be stuck with something that is useless compared to what's available.
But who will guard the guards?
But who will guard the guards?
if you get a extra 256 - 512 ram youll be set

I purchased it when it first hit the shelves and played till CC released, hated their rebalance and moved on, Since then I've been back twice, just a month at a time... I recently purchased EQ2, partially so that I can swap over to their 'all access' account and play both for only a little extra. It is worth the money in the long run imo, you'll probably come and go like a lot of people do.
